History of St. Michael the Archangel Parish. A Half Centry of Saint Michael Catholic Church, Olyphant, PA. 1912-1962. CAP at Orchard Lake. The growth of coal mining in the Lackawanna Valley brought a great number of Polish immi- grants to Olyphant at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Soon there arose a need for the establishment of a parish and the building of a church to serve these people. The organization of the parish was initiated by Mr. Joseph Kwiatek, a hotel owner in the borough, in the Spring of 1909. A committee was organized to lay the foundation of the new parish. The following men served on the committee: Messrs. Joseph Kwiatek, Michael Borys, Michael Ksydar, Louis Naglak, Joseph Guzek, Andrew Naglak, George Klocek, Joseph Pijar, John Pasko, John Swieton, Frank Szarek, Joseph Borys, Matthew Dutka, Anthony Oleniacz, and Jacob Czeluszniak. The first meeting of the committee was held in the home of Mr. Louis Naglak. It was decided at this meeting that a census be taken of the Polish families living in Olyphant and that affairs be held to raise money for the buying of property. On September 13, 1909 property was bought from Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Kelley. There were three homes on the property: one was to serve as a rectory; another was to become a convent; and the third was to be raised for the construction of a church. The Committee reported its progress to His Excellency, the Most Reverend Michael J. Hoban, who at that time was the Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton. -

“Letting Go of Our Pride” Jonah 1:17-3:1 Today we are in the second week of a brief study on the book of Jonah in the Old Testament. Some have questioned its validity and whether or not it really happened, but I believe wholeheartedly that it did happen. Jesus Himself knew that it happened and even taught it to His followers. The message of the book of Jonah is powerful for all to hear and understand. Most people think they know what the book of Jonah is all about. Some will say that it’s about a great fish that swallowed Jonah. But there is much more to it than that. The great fish is only mentioned four times in the entire book. Some would say it’s about a great city called Nineveh. But, there is much more to it than that. The great city is mentioned only nine times in the book. Some would say that the book is about a disobedient prophet. But, again there is much more to it than that. Though the book bears the prophet’s name, his name is only mentioned eighteen times. To the surprise of most, the truth is that the book of Jonah is all about God. God is mentioned in this short book thirty-eight times. If we eliminated God from the book of Jonah, the book wouldn’t make much sense at all. Charles Spurgeon said about Jonah, “The life of Jonah cannot be written without God; take God out of the prophet’s history, and there is no history to write.” Because God is full of grace and mercy and is patient towards His people, we learn much about God through its pages. -

KAISER, JR. Was John the Baptist the fulfillment of Malachi’s prediction about Elijah the prophet who was to come before that great day of the Lord comes? The hermeneutical solution to this question is offered in a generic fulfillment. or what the older theologians called the novissma. Therefore, Elijah has come "in the spirit and power" witnessed in John the Baptist and will yet come in the future. Generic prophecy has three foci: (1) the revelatory word, (2) all intervening historical events which perpetuate that word, and (3) the generic wholeness (one sense or meaning) in which the final or ultimate fulfillment participates in all the earnests that occupied the interim between the original revelatory word and this climactic realization. * * * THE NT's interest in the prophet Elijah may be easily assessed from the fact that he is the most frequently mentioned OT figure in the NT after Moses (80 times), Abraham (73), and David (59); Elijah's name appears 29 or 30 times.1 Even more significant, however, are the six major and explicit references to Elijah in the Synoptic Gospels. There, some of Jesus' contemporaries identified our Lord--in the second of three opinions-- as Elijah (Mark 6:14-16; Luke 9:7-9). Jesus' disciples were also aware of this popular confusion, for they too repeated it (Matt 16:13-20; Mark 8:27-30; Luke 9:18-21). -

JONAH: The Prophet Who Could Not Change YK 2017-5778 One night a ship’s captain was on the open sea when he spotted a light straight ahead in the distance. He flashed his signal light telling the other ship to veer 10 degrees to the West so they could safely avoid a collision. There was a return signal telling the captain to veer 10 degrees to the East. The captain signaled “I am a captain and demand you change your course. Who are you?” The response was, “I am a seaman and I am telling you to change your course.” The captain then responded, “I command this large freighter with an important cargo.” The seaman answered, “I am a seaman who monitors this lighthouse.” 1 The questions that might be elicited, Are you the Captain who feels he should not change? Are you the lighthouse attendant who cannot change? Or are you one who can easily change? One of the questions that must be asked on this holiest of days is, “Do we truly have the ability to change?” Are we like the lighthouse or are we the captains of our own ships? Having come to this day searching for our better selves and hopefully having passed through a period of internal wrestling with ourselves, the goal should be that we enter this new year not only with hope but also with a plan for improvement. To begin the year without some ideas and aspirations for improvement is to ignore every one of the multiple lists of transgressions, denying any faults. -

Book Introductions: Job - Malachi Job offers a hard look at suffering from both the human and divine perspec7ve. In the first two chapters we catch a glimpse of the spiritual background as Satan and God discuss righteous Job (and then Satan is allowed to bring disasters into Job’s life). From chapter 3 on we see Job responding, without the perspec7ve of chapters 1-2. Much of the book is a cycle of debate between Job and three men, plus a fourth nearer the end. The “friends” are clear that suffering is a consequence for sin, so Job must be a terrible sinner. Job calls on God to disclose his righteousness. Where does wisdom come from in the harsh reali7es of life? It cannot come from human thought, it must come from God. Finally God speaks and Job is humbled by dozens of ques7ons from the Almighty One. God is God. Job is dumbfounded. Finally God restores Job’s fortunes again. There is no easy answer for undeserved suffering, but Job urges us to look heavenwards in every circumstance. Psalms is a collec7on of collec7ons of poetry, many wriSen by King David. Psalms 1 and 2 act as an introduc7on to the book. The first psalm contrasts the enduring blessing of the believer who meditates on God’s Word with the flee7ng and vain eXistence of the wicked. Yet the book clearly demonstrates that life usually doesn’t seem to work out as it should – the wicked seem to prosper, the righteous seem to suffer, things are not right. So the various psalmists ask ques7ons, complain, occasionally have an emo7onal outburst. -

DECREE EFFECTING THE MERGER OF SAINT JOSEPH PARISH (DUBOIS) INTO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH (DUBOIS) History A. Saint Joseph Parish From 1877 to 1893, the only Catholic parish in DuBois was Saint Catherine of Siena Parish. In 1893, Bishop Tobias Mullen established Saint Joseph Parish in DuBois as a personal parish for Catholics in the DuBois area who were of Lithuanian or Polish descent. Parishioners quickly began construction of the original parish church, which was dedicated in 1894. For eighteen years, Lithuanian and Polish Catholics worshipped together in DuBois, until a separate parish was erected in DuBois in 1912 for Catholics of Polish heritage. With the creation of Saint Michael the Archangel Parish, Saint Joseph Parish was effectively split in half. Since the number of parishioners was still significant, however, a larger church was needed, and the present church was constructed in 1924. The former church building was converted to use as the parish school. For a time, Saint Joseph Parish administered a mission at St. Anthony church in Helvetia. The mission had previously been a parish in its own right before becoming a mission of Saint Stanislaus Parish in Tyler and then of Saint Joseph Parish in DuBois, until fire destroyed the mission in 1955. Saint Joseph parish school, housed in the former church, closed its doors in 1971. Since 1999, Saint Joseph Parish has not had a full-time pastor, sharing a pastor first with Saint Catherine of Siena Parish from 1999 to 2009, and then with Saint Michael the Archangel Parish from 2009 to the present. -

Old Testament Overview The Christian Bible is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The word “testament” can also be translated as “covenant” or “relationship.” The Old Testament describes God’s covenant of law with the people of Israel. The New Testament describes God’s covenant of grace through Jesus Christ. When we accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we enter into a new relationship with God. Christians believe that ALL Scripture is “God-breathed.” God’s Word speaks to our lives, revealing God’s nature. The Lord desires to be in relationship with His people. By studying the Bible, we discover how to enter into right relationship with God. We also learn how Christians are called to live in God’s kingdom. The Old Testament is also called the Hebrew Bible. Jewish theologians use the Hebrew word “Tanakh.” The term describes the three divisions of the Old Testament: the Law (Torah), the Prophets (Nevi’im), and the Writings (Ketuvim). “Tanakh” is composed of the first letters of each section. The Law in Hebrew is “Torah” which literally means “teaching.” In the Greek language, it is known as the Pentateuch. It comprises the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. This section contains the stories of Creation, the patriarchs and matriarchs, the exodus from Egypt, and the giving of God’s Law, including the Ten Commandments. The Prophets cover Israel’s history from the time the Jews entered the Promised Land of Israel until the Babylonian captivity of Judah. -
