His analysis inscribes in the debate concerning the moral status of animals and the possibilities of limiting their suffering despite an increasing demand for animal products. The main focus of Coetzee's investigations are literature and the faculty of imaginative insight into the perspectives of other beings. His efforts have been recognized by the Nobel committee of the Swedish Academy who, upon awarding him a Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003, praised his work for portraying “the surprising involvement of the outsider,”1 referring both to people and to animals. Coetzee can be considered an important voice in the discussions concerning the human-animal interdependency and man’s duties to the natural world. The debate regarding the ethical status of animals originates in Antiquity when it was first theorized by Plato (c. 472-348 BC), a founder of Western philosophy. Advocating the immortality of human soul, Plato argued that people could reincarnate into other beings, including animals. He also claimed that animals could reincarnate into people. Therefore, he condemned harming animals and eating meat because, given the reincarnation argument, human carnivorousness could turn out a cannibalistic practice. He applied an equal status to both people and animals.2 Plato's ideas were challenged by his disciple Aristotle (384-322) who contested equalizing humans with animals, grading the whole of creation into a hierarchy. He called the hierarchy “the scale of nature” and put man at its top, arguing that people deserved a privileged position because they possessed rational souls responsible for thought and reflection. This included nearly 1 million calves, 2.5 million sheep and lambs, 34 million cattle, 110 million hogs, 242 million turkeys, and well over 8.7 billion chickens (USDA 2011a; 2011b). Though hundreds of slaughterhouses actively contributed to these totals, more than half of the cattle just mentioned were killed at just fourteen plants. A slightly greater percentage of hogs was killed at only twelve (USDA 2011a). Chickens were processed in a total of three hundred and ten federally inspected facilities (USDA 2011b), which means that if every facility operated at the same capacity, each would have slaughtered over fifty-three birds per minute (nearly one per second) in every minute of every day, adding up to more than twenty-eight million apiece over the course of twelve months.1 Incredible as these figures may seem, 2010 was an average year for agricultural animals. Indeed, for nearly a decade now the total number of birds and mammals killed annually in the US has come in at or above the nine billion mark, and such enormous totals are possible only by virtue of the existence of an equally enormous network of industrialized agricultural suppliers. These high-volume farming operations – dubbed “factory farms” by the general public, or “Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs)” by state and federal agencies – are defined by the ways in which they restrict animals’ movements and behaviors, locate more and more bodies in less and less space, and increasingly mechanize many aspects of traditional husbandry.

AI technology has always shown a stepwise increase in its capacity and complexity. The last step took place several years ago with the increased progress in deep neural network technology. Each such step goes hand in hand with our understanding of ourselves and our understanding of human cognition. Indeed, AI was always about the question of understanding human nature. AI percolates into our lives, changing our environment. We believe that the next few steps in AI technology, and in our understanding of human behavior, will bring about much more powerful machines that are flexible enough to resemble human behavior. Laverty Teachers College, Columbia University Norm Friesen’s analysis of Wittgenstein as a tragic philosopher of education draws upon an understanding of Wittgenstein’s German influences: Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Karl Kraus, Alfred Loos, Otto Wininger, and Oswald Spengler. According to Friesen, these influences share “a dark view of the world and our place within it,” which inspired Wittgenstein’s deeply pessimistic philosophy of education. Friesen argues that Wittgenstein deliberately brings the experience of learning a language into relation with the way “we talk of an animal being trained to do certain things” in order to highlight that the process of becom- ing a cultured or “conventionalized” being — otherwise known as humanization — necessarily entails “renunciation and brutality.” Friesen may be right that En- glish-speaking philosophers of education have failed to appreciate the full force of Wittgenstein on Abrichtung — the breaking in of an animal by means of obedience training or dressage — but he does not go all the way to establishing that Abrichtung is characteristically brutal and harsh. Wittgenstein uses the word Abrichtung to describe language learning and ed- ucation. As Wolfgang Huemer explains, in German the term is “exclusively used for animals, for training dogs to sit down on the command ‘sit,’ or horses to gallop when the rider performs a certain bodily movement.”1 Thus, to German speakers, Wittgenstein’s suggestion that “we have to abrichten our children” seems quite drastic; it implies that children are animals. According to Friesen, English-speaking philos- ophers of education are inclined to explain away Wittgenstein’s reliance upon the term, and so make his philosophy of education appear far more progressive than it is.

    Chapter 15 – Environmental Ethics General Overview In this final chapter our obligations to the larger non-human community and the rights that that community may have are explored, especially practices involving animals whether it be for food, sport, amusement, etc. What justifies our treatment of animals in this regard since many of our practices involve inflicting pain, injury and death? Are animals simply inferior to humans – like sticks and stones as Plato said, or soulless machines according to Descartes- such that the pain we inflict requires little or no justification? How important is the possession of reason? Are we separate from and superior to nature or inextricably bound to it? Appropriately, this final chapter raises again some of the hardest questions of moral philosophy. Class Suggestions There are numerous exercises that you might get students to engage in here for this topic. One popular scenario is to get students to imagine they have landed on a new planet with all kinds of things that they don’t recognize flying, crawling and swimming. Some creatures appear to be very intelligent. Their food supplies have run out and desperation will soon set in. They will have to decide what they can eat and what they can’t. What criteria do they use? This kind of activity will bring out assumptions that are often hidden, perhaps by the fact that animals seem to be almost invisibly embedded in every part of our lives and that their use is taken for granted. Other activities might include getting students to work out a hierarchy of animals based on categories like ‘Kill /destroy it because it interferes with your quality of life’ or ‘Own it or deprive it of its freedom without any reason’, ‘Perform harmful experiments on it’, etc.

Last year was our 125th Anniversary. 2. We are the parent of the Children's Aid Society. The OHS was founded to protect the welfare of animals and children. The Children's Aid Society branched off from the OHS several years later. 3. The Ottawa Humane Society is a not-for-profit and a registered charity. We are governed by a board of 14. 4. The OHS may be bigger than you think. Last year, our regular staff compliment was 102 full- and part-time staff. (Though almost half are part-time.) Our budget is $6.2 million. Nearly two-thirds of this comes from donors and supporters. 5. The OHS is now located at 245 West Hunt Club Many people still don't know that we relocated in June 2011. 6. West Hunt Club is the OHS's fourth shelter. The first was built on Mann Avenue in 1933. 7. The new OHS West Hunt Club shelter is more than three times the size of the old Champagne Ave. Shelter. Despite its size, one month after it opened in June 2011, the new shelter was full. 8. The OHS cares for over 10,000 animals every year.
