Nawaz Khan Department of Mass Communication, Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, India ABSTRACT The Meitei Pangal community of Manipur has undergone tremendous social change over the centuries. Among the factors responsible for the change in the community, the change in traditional occupations is one indicator of social change. From being honest professional soldiers in history to serving as journalists in the contemporary times, members of the Meitei Pangal community engage in a variety of activities as their occupation that supports their physical and emotional well being besides being symbols of their social status. The community has more than sixty clan titles given by different kings mostly based on their either occupations or inhabitations. The multi-occupational nature of the community is reflected in the diversity of these occupation-based clan names. But clan names and traditional occupations of the community have been drifting apart over the centuries even as change has taken place in many aspects of the society. Today members of the community are no more identifiable with their occupation after which their clans were named because their occupations have been diversified while clan names remain merely a group identity. The occupational change is observed in terms of changes in the distribution of activities in the socio-economic structure of society with social implications on the work force of the community.

CHISHTI Under the Supervision of Professor S. A. H. HAQOI Head of the Department of Political Science FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH X&7B POLITICHL DEVELOPFtEM IN PlrtNlPUR, 1919-1949 The study deals with the political and constitutional deuelopments in the erstwhile princely State of C'lanipur from 1919 till its merger uith India in 1949. Bordered with Burma, she occupies one of the strategically situated states in the north-eastern region. In the uake of the political upheaval of 1891, Planipur lost her identity and became a protectorate of the British Government of India. Since the Flanipuri uprising of 1891 against the British Government, the^Kuki insurgency during 1917-19 uas the most significant political occurring dui-ing the entire period of the British rule in Manipur. The Kukis, one of the most powerful tribes of Fianipur, revolted against foreign domination. The administration uas very much upset by the disturbances in the hills. The Government felt considerably annoyed with frequent troubles which often resulted in losses of life and property. The Government could, however, bring the situation under control only in 1919, The experience of the Kuki rebellion made the British Government realise the inadequacy of the rules which wore framed for the administration cf flanipur State in 191G, The unrest among the Kacha Magas and the Kabul riagas of the north-uest of Manipur during the early l93CJs uas a turning point In the political hlctory of tribal rianlpur.

Ritual Festival for Appeasing Ancestral Gods: A Study of Kanglei Lai-haraoba Festival of Manipur Nganbi Chanu Lai Haraoba is one of the most important indigenous ritual festivals celebrated by the Meitei community of Manipur. It is celebrated to propitiate and please the ancestral deities to get their blessings in return. It depicts the act of creating uni- verse and its objects, and unveils the endless journey of universe through its ritu- alistic performances. It is celebrated in Manipur since time immemorial and is being continued till today. The festival includes rituals, ceremonial, dance, music, oral literatures (through hymn and songs) etc. which are handed down from one generation to another. It is inseparably linked with the evolution of human beings, how they took to settlement by satisfying their universal basic needs of food, clothing and shelter by cultivating, building houses, wearing, etc. The paper shows the significance of the Lai Haraoba in Manipuri Society and discusses Kanglei Haraoba and its special features. The finding presents the festival’s unique Pre- Vaisnivite (Hindu) worldview, which in its aesthetic sensitivity discusses the core of Manipuri culture. Keywords: Lai Haraoba; Kanglei; Lainingthou; Lairembi; Amaiba; Amaibi; Penakhongba; Ekouba Introduction There are different interpretations regarding the etymology of the term Lai-Haraoba.
