CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 20105 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

hat can you say when you have literally had the rug pulled from under you’ as we truly did with the September 4 colossal earth uake. The damage to our turfs at Porritt Park is catastrophic, as most of you will have seen through the media or perhaps by a walk about visit. Fortunately due to the more stable underlying ground at Nunweek and Marist parks those turfs were only slightly affected.

There is a uniting strength in that we each experienced the ferocity of the event and know only too well through our own personal difficulties or those of friends and family the hurdles we face in recovery.

am asked often hat is happening with Porritt Park , and can say that we are investigating all possibilities. our Canterbury Hockey Association Board, the executive staff and the Canterbury Artificial Surfaces Trust CAST are all working with utmost haste and diligence to replace the lost turfs as uickly as possible. There are many challenges in achieving the best outcome for Canterbury hockey and assure you all that this is paramount in all we do.

am hugely relieved and grateful that CAST have commenced the construction of the second pitch at Nunweek well ahead of schedule. This pitch is now scheduled for completion around late February. This will provide us with three artificial pitches at the start of the 2011 season, the same as for the start of the 2010 season.

ou may be aware that we had indicated in the Christchurch City Council’s LTCCP long term community council plan we need five full si ed pitches to be near optimal capacity to suit our current playing numbers. The replacement of the Porritt pitches will provide that. n the mean time we will need to adapt to suit the limited turf availability and the Board ask the cooperation and understanding of the hockey community in this respect.

Our financial position has been favourable again this year under tight management, which as our CEO reports has placed us in the favourable position of being able to move ahead uickly in assisting with the costs of Nunweek 2. e have also been able to keep costs of being involved in our sport stable.

The family of hockey continued through 2010 with good participation approximately 3 player growth and support across all competitions unior, youth, senior and masters . t was pleasing to see the continuing growth and uality of umpiring across all sectors, including representative.

Our representative teams have as a rule been battling to achieve the successes a number of exceptions noted that they strive for. e recognise that our northern counterparts have gained benefit from forming high performance academies to foster high performance achievers in hockey. Looking to the future we in Canterbury have been the catalyst in creating a South sland Hockey high performance academy, Hockey Academy South, that will commence later in 2011. e have a considerable task to enhance our capabilities as a province in playing strength, coaching capability, and umpiring performance and this is a positive move toward that.

thank, on your behalf, our Board members Sandra Pooch, Diane estaway, Patrick Coupe, Gary Spence and Craig Mc ntosh, for their service and wisdom.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 20106 offer our CEO, Tim Shannahan, and his management team our gratitude and thanks for their vigilance and professional performance, particularly in soldiering on in difficult operating conditions following the earth uake.

To our office holders, committee chairmen, committee members, club representatives, and our many volunteers a sincere thank you on behalf of our members. particularly highlight the sterling performance and leadership of our retiring President, Mark Beatson.

To each of the trustees of CAST, in particular Chairman Selwyn Maister and Treasurer Peter Cox, we acknowledge the huge input you have all provided toward achieving our artificial playing surfaces needs. Our thanks redoubled now, more than ever.

My last thanks and acknowledgements pass on to our sport partners CAST, Hockey New ealand, Canterbury est Coast Sports Trust, Christchurch City Council, our sponsors and community funding agencies.

Site plan of the new field to be constructed at Nunweek Park

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 20107 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

The 2010 year will long be remembered in Canterbury as the year of the earth uake, with the Canterbury Hockey Association being significantly impacted by the devastation. The two fields at Porritt Park are beyond repair, while the administration office has experienced subsidence. At this time the future of Porritt Park as the home of hockey in Canterbury remains unknown, as does the timeframe for the rebuild of the two artificial surface fields that have been lost.

This uncertainty has forced the need for the construction of a second field at Nunweek Park to occur ahead of schedule, and without desired funding in place, to at least allow the sport to have access to three artificial surface fields in 2011. Given the current funding shortfall, it is with relief that the Association has generated financial reserves in recent years to contribute towards the development of an additional field. ithout the 500,000 contribution that will be made to the Nunweek Park development by the Association, this pro ect would simply not have been possible. t is appropriate to acknowledge the efforts of the Canterbury Artificial Surfaces Trust in responding so promptly in the aftermath of the earth uake to progress this pro ect.

hile the earth uake may be the lasting memory, there were a number of other significant events for the Association in the 2010 year. The completion of the Marist Park St. Bede’s College hockey field certainly sits high on that list. Having access to a fourth field during the 2010 season eased pressure on Porritt Park and Nunweek Park to cater for the ever growing number of participants and matches that must be scheduled. For a few months at least, the unsociable and undesirable playing times that the sport had become accustomed to were a thing of the past. Thank you to the North est Christchurch Community Sporting Trust and St. Bede’s College for making Marist Park a reality.

The need for more fields continues to be ustified by the growth in participation numbers. Registered participants to Hockey New ealand this year increased by a further 3.3 , reaching 4,046 3,914 in 2009 . As in previous years, growth was experienced in every participation category, with the greatest growth rates experienced at the Senior omen up 8.8 and the Senior Men up 6.5 levels.

The performance of Canterbury teams on the field was generally an improvement on the previous year, with seven Canterbury teams claiming national titles. However, only one of these titles was at a Premier A tournament, with the Under 21 omen achieving that lone success. Results at a representative level remain an area for on going improvement.

The year presented many challenges from a staffing perspective, with four key staff moving on prior to the start of the winter season. After providing outstanding service to the sport for in excess of two decades the retirements of Peter Seymour and Bill Lynn were always going to signify a changing of the guard. The contribution of both can never be fully recognised because it was more than ust a ob for both of them. Also departing, were Greg Clark after five years leading the development program and ate Baxter after almost three years in the area of sponsorship, events and marketing.

Appointments during the year were Dean McConville Facilities Manager , Bevan Fergusson Facilities Caretaker , who returns for a second stint, Sun ay Ganda Participation & Development Manager and iv otton Operations Coordinator . Unfortunately Dean resigned in October to pursue other options, but the timing was convenient to the Association given the impact on the earth uake which meant it would be difficult to ustify

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 20108 two facilities staff. Moving forward the hockey community can be confident that the staff can continue to deliver the sport to desired standards and seek further improvements in the process.

This year also saw the continued use of interns to assist with various pro ects, as ate Saunders University of Canterbury , Hilde Peters University of Amsterdam and Alexandra Ochsendorf nHolland University completing internships during the year. Tom van Beem University of Amsterdam commenced a five month internship in September.

To all staff, thank you for your contributions during the year. our efforts are greatly appreciated. To Margaret Huckstep and Chris Leslie, your contributions in assisting the new staff and providing appropriate guidance based on your experiences were invaluable.

To our funders and sponsors, your ongoing support is appreciated. t is also appropriate to acknowledge the professional support received from various external organisations, in particular the Canterbury est Coast Sports Trust and the New ealand Hockey Federation.

To the hockey community, thank you for your engagement this year in various opportunities to support and influence the direction being taken by the Association. The continued use of the Presidents Forum as a means to discuss relevant matters and seek solutions remains beneficial. The increased levels of feedback from the hockey public are also of benefit.

To the many volunteers, your willingness to give of your time to assist the Association for your love of hockey and/or to support the engagement of family and friends in the sport is one of the Association’s greatest assets. Thank you for what you have provided and will hopefully continue to provide.

Finally, to Richard Munt, Board Chairman, thank you for your ongoing guidance and support during the past year.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 20109 SPONSORSHIP, EVENTS & MARKETING REPORT

Itt became clear very early in the financial year that 2010 would rerequire uire a different approach of the Canterbury Hockey Association in relation to sponsorship and marketing. Following the decision of Kate ate Baxter to resign and head overseas, decisions were made that it was not appropriate to simply rere-advertise advertise and appoint a replacement. The level of sponsorship that the Association had attained in some very difficult financial times had not been at desired levels and the financial climate was not expected to be any different in the foreseeable future. As a result, the position of Sponsorship, Events & Marketing Manager was discontinued upon Kate’s ate’s departure.

However, the need moving forward for a position in relation to sponsorship remains under consideration. Existing sponsors rerequire uire a level of servicing that it is not reasonable to add to the workload of existing staff. There is also the reality that despite best endeavours sponsorship relationships can not continue forever and this rerequires uires efforts are put into establishing new relationships.

Itt is appropriate to recognise the Association’s mamajor or sponsors – Heartland Hotels and Pica Print, both of whom have their current agreements conclude at the end of 2010. Their support with the Canterbury senior teams competing in the National Hockey League has been greatly appreciated. To all other sponsors and advertisers, your support enables the Association to deliver desired outcomes. Thank you.

Efforts to continue to obtain funds from gaming trusts and community organisations were maintained at previous levels, and this is reflected in the grants received during the year. Whilehile the amount received was down on previous years, which was to be expected given the general decline in funds available, it was still an outstanding result. Gaming trusts and community organisations continue to view the Association as an organisation worthy of sisizeable eable financial support in recognition of the quality uality proprojects ects for which funding is sought.

Below is the amount received from each gaming trust and communitycommunity organisation for the 2010 financial year (with with eequivalent uivalent amount for 202009): : 2010 2009 Canterbury est Coast Sports Trust 25,000 25,000 Caversham Foundation 0 5,000 Christchurch City Council 13,000 7,200 Department of Corrections 888 0 Eureka Trust 0 40,000 First Sovereign 35,000 5,000 New ealand Community Trust 73,000 86,000 Pub Charity 30,000 30,000 Perry Foundation 10,000 20,000 The Canterbury Community Trust 50,000 50,000 The Dr. Tom Anderson Memorial Trust 518 4,714 The Mainland Foundation 42,750 50,000 The Lion Foundation 22,000 20,000 The Southern Trust 30,000 21,000 The Trust Charitable Foundation nc. 12,000 0 Trust Aoraki 4,000 0 outhtown nc. 9,000 0 Total 357,156 363,914

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201010 The Awards Dinner was an appropriate celebration of Canterbury hockey. Held at the Addington Events Centre, in the aftermath of the earth uake it was a positive opportunity for the community to come together. The attendance of 184 is a reflection on the uality of the evening. This year the guest speakers were Canterbury’s international umpires aren Bennett and Nigel ggo, and Canterbury’s representatives at the outh Olympics amie Bolton and Rachel McCann.

The Legends Night, sponsored by ey Business Partners Limited, once again allowed previous Canterbury A/Cats/Cavaliers players to reminisce and support the current players. t was disappointing that as has been done in previous years it was not possible to schedule matches for the Canterbury teams to allow the legends to watch the current teams, but it was still an en oyable evening with the number in attendance continuing to grow each year. ohn Christensen had the honour of presenting the current Cats and Cavaliers players with their playing shirts.

The olunteers Function held in November at the Carlton Corner was an appropriate opportunity to thank numerous volunteers in person for their contribution in the past year. Five lucky attendees also won double passes to The Court Theatre.

t is appropriate to acknowledge the efforts of iv otton in the organisation of the events identified above.

Marketing of the Association continues to be limited. The lack of fields continued to constrain the value of any significant marketing initiatives, as more harm than benefit can occur if marketing results in so many new players to the sport that they simply can not be accommodated. 2011 had promised to be a year in which more marketing activities could be considered as the sport could grow the capacity on the four fields now available, but the earth uake has changed those circumstances.

The portfolio of Participation & Development experienced a number of changes during 2010. Greg Clark resigned from the position of Development Manager early in February and SunSunjay ay Ganda was appointed in March to the modified role of Participation & Development Manager. The Hockey FUNdamentals Holiday Program & Canterbury Hockey Association School of Excellence (CHASE) CHASE programs were revised to ensure these programs were of a higher quality uality and better provided for participants. School visits, a component of the Hockey New Zealand ealand Regional Development Program, continued in 2010. However this program will undergo mamajor or changes in 2011 with the new Government KiwiSport iwiSport initiative. CHA Junior unior Academy & Goal Scoring programs continued to be delivered with success and provided an excellent build up to the Primary representative season. The CoachForce Hockey Officer, Chris Leslie, coordinated and delivered a number of coach education opportunities along with umpire education courses. The Association continued to support Hockey New Zealand’s ealand’s talent identification pathways and the Lincoln University Sports Scholarship program.

The Hockey FUNdamentals Holiday Program was run across the four school holiday periods, January, anuary, April, July uly & October. It t was offered over 21 days at both Porritt Park and Nunweek Park hockey facilities. The participation numbers were down on last year, however, due to staffing changes and the 4 September earthearthquake uake the decreased numbers were forecast. A total of 181 participants took part in the program. The program was modified for the participants to ensure they were provided with a quality uality holiday program focusing on enenjoyment oyment through fun games and activities centred on hockey. A new marketing initiative was employed including posters and brochures to help reach the target audience and to clarify programs offered by CHA.

The Canterbury Hockey Association School of Excellence (CHASE) CHASE skill development program was also revised in 2010 after the delivery of the term one block. The critical changes that were made included the coaches deliveringdelivering the program and the content delivered. Renowned coaches, including Cathy Baker, Pat Barwick, Shirley Haig, Chris Leslie & Hayden Shaw, committed to the program, providing CHASE with greater credibility. Starting from November 2010 the program will now be offered in three blocks, offoff-season, season, summer and prepre-season. season. The offoff-season season program was delivered over a 6 week period commencing November. The summer program will be held in January anuary 2011 with a camp style including three hour sessions over two days. The PrePre-season season program will commence in February 2011 and run over a 6 week period. At the conclusion of the program athletes are provided with profiles, detailing their progressions made during the program and areas to focus on in the future. A DDVD D with footage of the athlete performing skills during the program and backed up with skills being performed at the international level is supplied.

As a component of the Hockey New Zealand ealand Regional Development Program funding received, school visits continued in 2010 with a variety of schools visited throughout the year, including rural areas such as Banks Peninsula, North Canterbury and Ellesmere. With ith the new central government KiwiSport iwiSport initiative, there will be mamajor or changes in 2011. Currently the Association is developing a hockeyhockey-specific specific KiwiSport iwiSport Fundamentals Program. The Canterbury West est Coast Sports Trust has confirmed an annual investment of $25,000 25,000 to support the development and delivery of this program. As a component of the funding the Association will work with other regional associations, specifically Malvern, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and West est Coast to deliver the program in their own catchment area. It t is envisaged that the program will be run inin-school school and also during school holidays.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201013 The unior Academy, formally known as Southern Stars and Goal Scoring programs, was again delivered with success to ust under one hundred returning representative players. Participants were invited to attend and the programs helped build towards the primary representative season. The Association and players continue to benefit with uality coaches involved in the delivery and the number attending is only constrained by the resources available. t has been noticeable at the Development trials that there is a gap developing in skill level and it is critical that programs are developed to increase skill through player and coach education.

A new approach was taken to coach education this year with a greater effort made to deliver numerous courses within the Hockey New ealand coach education program. The Small Sticks, outh and Club coach courses were all delivered during the year, with a Level Two course to occur in November. The numbers attending these courses totalled 72 for the year. However, on reflection the number of course opportunities offered moving forward will likely be reduced, with numbers registering for each specific course often resulting in two e uivalent courses being combined.

Umpire education numbers remained high, which can only be positive for the Association. 185 individuals engaged in various courses, which included the first delivery of the new Hockey New ealand Level Two Umpire Course.

The Association continued to support Hockey New ealand’s talent identification pathways and the Lincoln University Sports Scholarship program.

n support of the Hockey New ealand talent identification pathway the Association coordinated the running of the Under 17 Regional Coaching Clinics for the greater Canterbury region. The clinic was held in April and included 50 male and female athletes from throughout the northern region of the South sland. The success of the clinics revolves around the expertise and application of the coaches involved. This year the uality of coaching was of a very high standard.

Also linked to talent identification pathways was the Association’s continued engagement with the Lincoln University Sports Scholarships program. Eighteen scholars were involved with eight of them representing Canterbury at the Under 21 and/or National Hockey League level. received the 2010 Hockey Sports Scholar of the ear. A 2009 scholar, Anna etherall, was recently named in the 2011 Black Sticks Development S uad. The Sports Scholarship program is an excellent program attracting new talent to Canterbury and retaining the existing talent. The Association is grateful and thanks Lincoln University for their support and the opportunity to be a partner of this program.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201014 FACILITIES REPORT

This report would have read very differently if written at the end of August. ith new staff having come on board in 2010 to replace the long serving Peter Seymour and Bill Lynn, it had been a year of challenge in terms of providing the facilities at Porritt Park and Nunweek Park to a standard that had become expected by the hockey community. The knowledge that both custodians possessed was far greater than what could ever be written in the operating manuals they provided to the new staff.

However, Dean McConville and Bevan Fergusson are to be commended on their efforts as they set about maintaining and presenting the facilities. Changes implemented at Porritt Park included making the outdoor areas under the grandstand more conducive to team use before and after matches the addition of permanent seating to the Porritt Park 2 dugouts and giving aspects of the facility a red and black feel. A change at Nunweek Park was the regular use of the ride on groomer, transported across from Porritt Park as re uired, that enhanced the condition of that field.

One issue that was a frustration all year was the excess of mud that pooled on the blue surfaced run off areas around the two fields at Porritt Park. Certainly worse than in previous years, it is still unknown if this was caused as a result of players taking less care to clean their shoes before going onto the fields or extra dirt or dust blowing onto the fields as a result of construction in the surrounding areas. Regardless, it did not allow for the fields to be presented to a desired standard.

The past year also reflected the age of the facilities, with significant expense incurred on replacing electrical components in the light towers on Porritt Park 1 and Nunweek Park. arious components that were still original from when the various towers were installed decided this year was their used by date and had to be replaced at significant expense.

A recommendation was put to the Canterbury Artificial Surfaces Trust CAST that Nunweek Park receives an upgrade with improved uality lighting installed and dugouts erected. The lighting upgrade is more complex than ust using higher uality bulbs, with completely new components re uired. uotes have been obtained for both pro ects and have collectively come in at in excess of 150,000, meaning that progress will be very dependent on funding outcomes for the new field and what funds may therefore still be available for allocation.

The role of the Canterbury Hockey Association with regard to the facilities at Porritt Park and Nunweek Park continues to be the management of the facilities on behalf of the owners, CAST. This management function re uires not only the maintenance of the facilities, but also ensuring that all components of the lease agreement of CAST with the Christchurch City Council are delivered to a suitable standard.

ith regard to Christchurch City Council pro ects at Porritt Park, it had been agreed that all remaining wooden fences would be replaced in the coming years, with the fences at the southern end replaced this year. n addition, all changing rooms were to have new roof tiles installed, replacing the numerous broken or missing tiles in those roofs. Completion on these pro ects is now an unknown, as is everything else to do with the future of Porritt Park.

Marist Park St. Bede’s College came on line this year and while it is known that the Association will have a responsibility to maintain these facilities, the specifics are still to be finalised.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201015 Another change in the operation of the facilities this year was the decision to not appoint a third full time staff member and instead engage casual contractors to assist with supervision of facilities. hile the standard of service received from the various individuals varied, the Association was generally happy with the concept and considered it far more appropriate than having three staff supervise the facilities during all hours of operations. A different model was also tested at Marist Park, whereby the contracted personnel were simply in attendance at re uired times to open, water, turn on lights and close.

The relationship with the Department of Corrections continued in 2010, with a number of hours provided through community service. The Association was fortunate that some of these individuals were painters and builders by trade and could perform more significant pro ects.

Moving forward the facilities office has relocated to Nunweek Park, with all e uipment having been moved from Porritt Park. Time will tell what the future is for Porritt Park, but in the interim the focus will be the provision of uality facilities at Nunweek Park and Marist Park. t is fortunate that all three fields are in, or will be once construction is finished in the case of the new Nunweek Park field, very good condition.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201016 COMPETITIONS REPORT

Senior and Youth Competitions Having learnt from the issues faced in 2008 and subse uent changes needed to the Association s Competition By Laws and introduction of competition specific Rules & Regulations documents for the 2009 season, there were minimal changes re uired to the rules of the Senior and outh competitions for the 2010 season.

Although the ob ective in 2009 was to see a return to 8 team divisions for the 2010 season, this was not possible. Entries to the competitions did not lend themselves to 8 team divisions, however this should have resulted in the lower divisions having the variance away from 8 teams. nstead, due to club / school team entries whereby specific teams either did or did not want to play in the respective grades they were seeded into, variances were present in higher divisions. n accommodating these re uests where practical the structure of various divisions also had to alter and the competition formats played by various grades differed to what was desired e.g. no Porritt Cup for some divisions .

As a result of differing numbers of teams in various grades an amendment was made to the play up rules again for 2010 that allowed different numbers of games being played in a higher division before regrading to that higher division occurred, instead of it being a blanket rule of four games and become regraded in the fifth game. The opportunity was also taken to allow goalkeepers more flexibility in the number of games they could play in the higher division before being regraded. This appeared to be warmly received by the hockey playing community.

These changes now seem to be widely accepted and have been instrumental in ensuring a smoother run competition.

By continuing the no rescheduling’ policy and using the Porritt Cup competition as it had been established, on designated dates that were perceived to offer difficulties for teams with player availability, the desire was to publish the draw for the whole competition prior to the season start as it is recognised this was greatly appreciated by players and management when achieved in 2009. However, the uncertainty regarding the completion of the Marist Park St Bede’s College field meant that match times and venues were only assigned a few weeks at a time for much of the season. t is hoped that 2011 and beyond will again allow for the full draw to be finalised prior to the start of the season.

The introduction of the Marist Park field allowed for the removal of very early morning and late evening start times, with the games spread around all four fields at friendlier times during the weekends and mid week.

The issues experienced with the 2009 finals weekend , specifically the disruption caused by the national secondary school tournament week that then meant a ragged finish to most divisions by having two days set aside for finals weekend , were addressed in 2010. The Canterbury Premier League competition did have its finals day and the atmosphere at Porritt Park was very en oyable for all participants. However the disappointing factor this year was the September 4 earth uake occurring in the small hours of the second finals weekend. The ensuing damage put paid to any play that weekend and although teams were given the option of playing the necessary games at a later date on either Marist Park or Nunweek Park several teams did not take up this opportunity. The Competitions Committee then applied the Competition By Laws in awarding various titles to the higher ranked of the two teams that had ualified for the final, based on standings in the round

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201017 robin stage of the competition. This method was also used to determine all other placings where final matches were incomplete.

Although 2011 will present many challenges for the Competitions Committee, and essentially the wider hockey community to work through as we have been significantly affected by damage to the home of hockey, the intended availability of a new field at Nunweek Park will be most welcome.

The contribution of the Competitions Committee members continues to be invaluable. The Association is fortunate to have people serving on this committee that have a wide range of hockey backgrounds through playing, coaching, umpiring and/or club administration. Most have served for many years and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. Thanks to erry Dyson as Chairman, for her efforts in continuing to ensure that competition matters were smoothly organised and to Graham ackson for professionally carrying out the duties of Secretary. All Committee members continue to be allocated to various subgroups to deal with dispensations, umpiring, discipline, register keeping and other related matters as they re uire work during the year and are all thanked for their efforts.

n terms of the si e of competition this year, the registered participant numbers were: Open Men 557 Open omen 524 Secondary School Boys 507 Secondary School Girls 574

The total number of players 2,162, was an increase of 65 on 2009 2,097 .

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201023 Senior Grass Competitions

The 2010 season started in mid April with the omen’s Competition retaining the eight teams it had during the 2009 season. Although the Men’s Competition had high hopes of gaining a fifth team with the combining of players from the Selwyn Blue team and the Hinemoa aiapoi team, this did not come about due to the lack of players available, thus leaving the Men’s Competition with only four teams for the second season in a row.

The Grass Competition was fortunate in only losing a couple of weeks of play due to wet weather, although there were a couple of grounds that were re uired to be closed for the season due to unsatisfactory playing surfaces. The Association was thankful that there were sufficient other grounds available to use for this not to have been a problem.

The Men’s Competition was once again dominated by the Selwyn Green team. Although stumbling with a loss in their second game of the season, they picked themselves up and went through the remainder of the season unbeaten, taking out the Men’s Competition.

The omen’s Competition was a closely fought competition between the Hornby Cheetahs and Avon. Although the Hornby Cheetahs went through the competition unbeaten they did draw a couple of their games, of which one was the final. ith a three points difference in round robin play this was enough for them to take out the omen’s Competition.

The final day was once again held at Nunweek Park and was well supported by players, supporters and spectators, and the weather was great.

The unior Competition again en oyed growth in team entries.

A record 25 teams entered the girls’ 11 a side competition and the 8 a side completion was up a team as well.

Boys’ 11 a side entries were up from eight to 11 which were largely offset by a drop of five 8 a side teams.

hile it is good to see the additional 11 a side teams there is still work to be done in growing the overall numbers.

6 a side entries were up 6 teams.

There was great relief when Marist Park opened enabling all 11 a side games to be moved off the grass although the Association still has issues in terms of the appropriateness of venues with a number of the 8 a side facilities not ideal for the uality of competition.

Clearly 2011 will be significantly more challenging in terms of venues the additional field pre earth uake had alleviated the pressure on 11 a side, but 8 a side grades remain, in many instances, playing on less than ideal surfaces.

n the last five years we have seen a 20 growth in numbers facilities have not increased excluding the six months we en oyed the fourth turf. The shortage of facilities is exacerbated by the uneven geographic spread of turf which is of particular concern to uniors.

The areas most affected are also the areas that have been struggling with numbers over recent seasons and the potential exists for a significant drop off in numbers as some clubs drop below the numbers to field teams.

The growth in playing numbers is highlighted in the figures below: Girls Boys Total 2006 1,078 510 1,588 2007 1,106 509 1,615 2008 1,153 562 1,715 2009 1,167 650 1,817 2010 1,195 650 1,845

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201027 Masters Competitions

A new local competition format was trialled over the 2009 2010 season. The pre Christmas competition was a round robin tournament, followed by seeded pool play post Christmas, culminating in finals at the end of the season. The intent of this format was to ensure a wider variety of opponents, rather than the limited number of teams in a top four, bottom six’ latter part of the competition. Unfortunately what transpired, was an opportunity for inconsistent play in the round robin allowing a team to still go on to win the pool play part of the competition in the New ear.

The finals of the local competition were won by Avon men and Harewood Red women.

The Masters Committee co opted Craig ggo onto the committee upon the resignation of an Rhodes. The Association thanks an for his input and wisdom during his time on the committee.

The popular social competitions were again run over the summer months. Nunweek Park hosted 110 teams pre Christmas and 81 teams post Christmas, while Porritt Park accommodated 24 teams pre Christmas and 10 teams after Christmas. ith a total of 225 teams involved over the 2009 10 summer, this represented an increase of 28 teams on the previous year 197 teams .

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201028 UMPIRES REPORT

The Association can be proud of the progress made in the area of umpiring throughout the 2010 season. The Umpires Committee continued on with the pathway formulated in 2009 with some outstanding results. t is great to be able to celebrate some outstanding achievements, but the hard work must continue to keep the momentum flowing. The goal for 2011 will be to launch a mentoring program. The earth uake has given the plans something of a shake and senior members are implored to dig deep and give a helping hand when time permits.

The Committee worked very hard throughout 2010 to achieve its goals, but were two members short which did create extra workloads in some areas. aren Bennett High Performance Co ordinator and Education Program Co ordinator works very hard for the young umpires that are being developed, as mentor, communicator, and organiser. She has assisted with the New ealand Level 1 and 2 Umpiring courses, has overseen the local educational theory courses, and has groomed the promising young umpires in preparation for their appointed Hockey New ealand tournaments with outstanding results. Added to that workload aren pursued her own international career.

an McDonald Appointments Co ordinator undertook another large task. Appointing the umpires to the draw each week, often with late changes, is a huge undertaking and one has to have the support of your family to get through the season. an had hoped to stand down from this position in 2011 but as a result of the earth uake has put her hand up for another season. The Association thanks her most sincerely for her dedicated work.

Lyndsey ones Resources Co ordinator and Mentor Co ordinator is another hard working committee member. He has ably assisted aren Bennett by running some of the ntroduction to Umpiring courses, has assisted with the coaching and mentoring of unior umpires, was at Porritt Park on Fridays to help mentor the outh Competition umpires and will fre uently put his hand up with anything else the committee needs done, and umpires as well. Thank you.

Mandy atts unior Co ordinator was at various parks each week helping in this area. This is a big undertaking and in 2011 there are great plans to lift the standard in this area as a relatively new group of umpires begin their pathway. t is exciting to work in with these young people and as always it is hoped coaches and players will give their support.

This year the following Educational Courses were held in Canterbury.

ntroduction to Umpiring 7 Hockey New ealand Level 1 Course 2 Hockey New ealand Level 2 Course 1 Elite Preparation for National Tournaments 5

2011 will see the introduction of log books which will be given out to all the young Canterbury umpires to assist them in their future development through to the national level, by being part of the local mentoring program.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201029 International Tournament Umpire Appointments

The Association has something to be proud of with respect to the outstanding successes achieved at an international level by its local umpires. There are three international umpires in the ranks and congratulations to them all:

Nigel ggo Reserved the Champions Trophy final in Germany. This was the highest achievement gained by a Canterbury umpire. Gareth Greenfield Umpired at the Commonwealth Games in ndia and promoted to the Grade 1 promising list of international umpires. aren Bennett Umpired the final of the Rabo Trophy in the Netherlands, upgraded to international umpire.

n addition Mark Rippin and Nigel South were appointed to the Pacific Games in Fi i.

Craig Gribble too has en oyed success internationally, his latest appointment as Umpires Manager at the recent Commonwealth Games being a highlight and he continues to be a great role model for umpires.

National Tournament Umpire Appointments

Canterbury was represented nationally by local umpires as listed later in this section. The reports received from Hockey New ealand during the year in relation to the performance of these umpires were so pleasing, with many not only performing well, but finishing high in the rankings, thus progressing up the ladder nationally. The following high achievers are:

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201031 REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS REPORT

Heartland Hotels Canterbury Cavaliers

2010 was a tough year for the Cavaliers. Nine team members were new to the National Hockey League NHL the team was without their international players due to Commonwealth Games commitments and the September 4 earth uake disrupted the build up.

The coaching team was led by the very experienced head coach Grant Edwards, and assisted by the newly appointed eremy Symonds. David Cattermole continued in his role as manager and Andrew Brydon was the videographer and assisted with the goalkeepers training. Brett arden was the physiotherapist, with Matt ngram delivering the conditioning program.

During the previous two years the build up has included matches against the Australian Capital Territory Academy of Sport and ueensland Academy of Sport hockey teams. Unfortunately no teams from Australia were available this year due to date changes in the Australian Hockey League. As an alternative the team was able to secure matches against Southern, in Timaru, and a three match series had been arranged against the Black Sticks Men’s team in Christchurch. Unfortunately due to the earth uake only one of these matches was played.

The team secured two wins and lost seven matches to finish a disappointing seventh at the National Hockey League.

The team’s results at the NHL were: Capital lost 0 2 Southern lost 2 3 Midlands lost 2 3 Central won 2 1 North Harbour lost 1 2 Auckland lost 1 4 Northland lost 1 4 Central lost 2 3 Northland won 5 4 (play-off for seventh/eight)

A special thanks to the coaching and management team and to the players for being available to represent their province.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201032 Pica Print Canterbury Cats

Looking to build on the sixth placing from 2009, the Cats had seven players back from that campaign. Samantha Charlton, a Black Sticks Development S uad member, along with the return of Aimee Heaps, a former Cats player, and three new players with National Hockey League NHL experience helped strengthen the side. There was a change in team management from the previous campaign. Chris Leslie, the head coach for the previous three seasons, stepped down due to Black Sticks commitments and Dan nns took over the position. Penny Devine managed the team and Gillian Radcliffe was the team physiotherapist. Matt Shallcrass and Simon Dickinson shared the video role.

The team worked hard in the pre season and were ably conditioned by Matt ngram. As was the case for the Cavaliers, the usual build up against Australian state academies was not available. However the s uad played a number of the Canterbury Division Two Men’s teams on a weekly basis and had matches against Southern, in Oamaru, and Auckland and North Harbour, in Auckland. This preparation proved very beneficial providing the women with good uality, high tempo matches.

The Cats dominated the round robin phase of the NHL, securing five wins and two draws, which placed them in the number one position heading into the semi finals. Unfortunately, the team lost to North Harbour in a close fought semi final and finished with a disappointing match against Midlands, another lose relegating them to a final placing of fourth. t was pleasing for the team to finish in the top four, although a higher placing would have been preferred, as it was an improvement on recent years. Players should benefit from the experience and look forward to the team continuing their progress in 2011.

The team’s results at the NHL were: Capital won 5 2 Central won 4 1 Southern won 5 0 Auckland drew 1 1 Northland drew 1 1 Midlands won 4 2 North Harbour won 1 0 North Harbour lost 1 2 (semi final) Midlands lost 2 4 (3rd/4th)

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201033 Senior B Representative Teams

As a result of the September 4 earth uake and the impact it had on players, it was not viable to send teams to the 2010 National Senior Tournament. t is appropriate to note that both teams were struggling for players, but the earth uake and subse uent change to university exam dates, which meant exams clashed with the tournament, put an end to any chances of fielding teams.

A special thanks to Sally Moorfield Senior B omen’s Coach , erry Dyson Senior B omen’s Manager , Nathan Maxwell Senior B Men’s Coach and incent Pooch Senior B Men’s Coach for the time spent preparing teams for the tournament.

Youth Representative Teams

Hockey New ealand introduced a ma or change for the 2010 season with the re introduction of the Under 15 age group, replacing the Under 16 age group.

Canterbury women had a very successful year winning three national titles and runner up in a fourth. Highlights included the Under 21 omen, the Under 18 B Girls and the Under 15 B Girls winning national titles. All three teams went through their respective tournaments unbeaten. The Under 15 A Girls secured second place in a close fought final.

The Under 21 Men played well to finish second. The other Canterbury boys team to achieve a top four placing was the Under 18 A Boys, finishing fourth.

Thank you to all coaches, managers, parents and players for their contributions to the Representative program.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201036 Primary Representative Teams

Build up for all the unior teams was badly affected by the September 4 earth uake. The call was made to withdraw the boys from the September 5 Timaru build up matches and the annual Christchurch tournament was scaled back as a result of a large number of associations withdrawing. Despite this everyone made the best of the situation and teams achieved top four placings in five of the six tournaments attended.

A very young Primary A Boys team overcame some patchy build up form and the disrupted preparation to perform above expectations. Undone for the third time in four years by strokes this time in the semi final, the team finished fourth overall.

Primary A Girls, never under threat in pool play, had to overcome a tough semi final against Tauranga, eventually winning on strokes to meet Auckland in the final. hat was a very high uality final ended 3 all after normal time and the teams were not separated until the second period of extra time when Auckland scored.

Both Primary B teams attended the McGrath Trophy tournament in Rotorua with the Boys winning the tournament and the Girls finishing third. The Primary B Boys had an outstanding season and the win was well deserved. They were also the only team in the country to beat South Canterbury, the Hatch Cup winners, winning a build up game. The girls were unlucky to meet eventual winners North Harbour first up after travelling all day and with no crossovers it is an unforgiving tournament.

The Development teams attended the South sland Festival of Hockey in Ashburton, where the Girls finished a very successful season by winning the final. The Girls Development Training S uad finished a very creditable fifth highlighting the depth that is currently en oyed on the girls side.

n build up games the Boys’ team struggled in a strong competition, but it was an invaluable experience for a large number of players new to 11 a side hockey. The Development Boys finished sixth and Boys Development Training s uad eleventh. t was decided that with the large exodus of ear 8 players in 2009 both Primary A teams were made up entirely of ear 8 players it was critical more young players were exposed to tournaments and in particular on the boys side at 11 a side level.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201039 Masters Representative Teams

The National Masters’ Tournament was held in Nelson in March 2010. Canterbury entered four women’s and three men’s teams. All teams performed outstandingly well and Canterbury teams won four gold medals and two silver medals, Canterbury’s best overall performance to date. Particular thanks must be extended to the coaches and managers of these teams for their efforts in organising, selecting and coaching their respective teams.

Again there was a large number of Canterbury Masters players selected for national teams, which is testament to the generally high standard of the local competition. Two coaches and two managers were also selected from Canterbury personnel for those roles in national teams.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201043 TOURNAMENT HOSTING REPORT

The Canterbury Hockey Association was allocated ust one tournament by Hockey New ealand in 2010, having hosted three national tournaments in 2009. That tournament was the National Secondary Schoolgirls Federation Cup.

Held from August 30 to September 3 at Porritt Park, the Federation Cup was a great week of hockey and it was fantastic having four Canterbury schools St Margaret’s College, Rangi Ruru School, illa Maria College and Marian College competing. There was certainly a bu ’ at the park throughout the week as a result of the performance of these schools, with three of them progressing from pool play into the uarter finals, before St Margaret’s College went on to claim national honours.

Fortunately most non Christchurch teams departed immediately following the finals and avoided the earth uake that struck early the next morning.

Special thanks must go to eannette Harper for taking on the role of Tournament Administrator on behalf of the Association.

n addition to this ma or tournament, other events that were hosted during the year included: South sland Super Sixes March South sland Under 18 & Under 15 Representative Preparation Matches une ueen’s Birthday Nunweek Park Secondary School Tournament August September South sland Primary Representative Preparation Matches September as noted in the Representative Teams Report section, the earth uake impacted on the number of teams that elected to travel to Christchurch to participate

As a result of the earth uake the Association has informed Hockey New ealand that no national tournaments should be allocated to Canterbury until further notice. ithout access to two water based fields at a single location, with supporting infrastructure, the Association is not in a position to meet the re uirements to host national tournaments.

However, the Association will still host various South sland events, in particular the four events listed by bullet point above. Christchurch’s geographical location means that various associations in the far north and far south of the South sland still consider Christchurch, even with reduced capacity in facilities, to be the preferred host for these events.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION | ANNUAL REPORT | 201059 APPENDIX A: CANTERBURY ARTIFICIAL SURFACES TRUST ANNUAL REPORT for year ended 30 September 2010

Trustees The Trustees remained unchanged and the following people acted in these voluntary positions during the last year: evin Boyce, Peter Cox, Mary Deakins, Sandra Pooch, an Riach, Tas Scott and Selwyn Maister Chairman .

Meetings t has been the busiest year in the relatively short history of the Trust as plans being made for the construction of a second turf at Nunweek Park were accelerated following the destruction of both Porritt Park turfs in the 4 September earth uake.

The Board met once face to face during the year and had several meetings electronically. The activity of the Board followed that of previous years involving receipt of turf fees and grants, repayments of borrowings and maintenance of existing turfs. n addition the Trustees appointed a Pro ect Team to deal with the new Nunweek Turf pro ect and that team was Peter Cox, Tas Scott and Selwyn Maister CAST , Tim Shannahan and Richard Munt CHA .

Nunweek Turf The Pro ect Team decided to contract Arrow nternational to manage the pro ect and to coordinate tenders for the various components of the pro ect rather than contract a single company to do the ob from start to finish. n doing so the Pro ect Team realised that this would involve them in more hands on’ work on the pro ect.

The tender from Tiger Turf was accepted for the playing surface and a new ETT Dressed Tiger Turf will be laid next February for the 2011 season. The new turf is planned to be completed by late February 2011.

Financial Performance The Trust achieved a profit of 59,997 including depreciation and grants for the year ending 30 September 2010. This adds to the reserves built up by CAST over the last few years, which will in all likelihood be heavily depleted by funding the new turf at Nunweek Park.

General As the earth uake destroyed the two Turfs at Porritt Park, CAST will be working intensively with CHA and the Christchurch City Council over the next few months, to ascertain whether or not a re build at Porritt is feasible and if it is not, where Canterbury hockey can base its playing head uarters in future.

Conclusion Thanks to all the Trustees for their continued commitment to CAST and also to the CHA, especially the Chief Executive Officer, Tim Shannahan, and Chairman, Richard Munt, for their ongoing cooperation and support.

Selwyn Maister Chair

t was a disappointing end to the year with the earth uake writing off the home of Canterbury hockey Porritt Park . But with a new turf under construction at Nunweek Park, the sport can still develop.

would like to thank the members of Supporters Club who have helped Canterbury Hockey out when re uested.

Golf The annual golf tournament proved to be another success on our second attempt. Snow stopped the first attempt but sixty six made it to the aimakariri Golf Club for the second time, teeing off after a hearty breakfast thanks to the team in the kitchen.

Thanks must also go to Alan Edward and Gary Marshall for organising the golf tournament.

Golf Tournament winners were

Raffles & Manpower Raffles are still running well. 20 25 minutes to sell five raffles is good but it would be better if we had more members willing to help out on a Thursday night. Approximately 5000 is raised and that helps enable us to meet our costs and donations to the Canterbury age group representative teams.
