The Mural Paintings of Protaton Church from Mount Athos
European Journal of Science and Theology, February 2020, Vol.16, No.1, 199-206 _______________________________________________________________________ THE MURAL PAINTINGS OF PROTATON CHURCH FROM MOUNT ATHOS Petru Sofragiu* Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi, Faculty of Orthodox Theology, 9 Cloșca, Iasi, 700065, Romania (Received 24 September 2019, revised 13 November 2019) Abstract This paper focuses on the study of the Church of the Protaton in Karyes, the most representative monument of Holy Mount Athos. Its mural paintings, which show examples of Byzantine Art and date back to the Paleologan period (the 19th century), have been preserved until today. They were attributed to Manuel Panselinos, the founder of the Macedonian School of painting, who also frescoed numerous churches in Macedonia and Medieval Serbia. The analysis of the stylistic elements, iconographic themes and their theological significance has surely given us the opportunity to take a deeper insight into the artistic background of this amazing painter who mastered the monumental compositions of the Church of the Protaton. The study aims at highlighting both the similarities and the differences in Panselinos’ masterpieces and the monuments decorated by the proud disciples of this top master in Thessaloniki, who remains an inexhaustible source of inspiration for future generations of artists. Keywords: Protaton, Karyes, Paleologan period, Panselinos 1. Introduction - brief history of the Protaton Church Near the centre of Athos Peninsula, it is located city of Karyes, which is the capital of Mount Athos. Founded in the 9th century, its name derives from the walnut trees (karyai), which abound in this region even from Antiquity, where the sanctuary of goddess Artemis is also located [1]. -

Pappas Interdisciplinary March 2021 VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO. 3 Center for Hellenic Studies and the Friends of Hellenic Studies From the Director Dear Friends, On March 25, 1821, in the city of Kalamata in the southern Peloponnesos, the chieftains from the region of Mani convened the Messinian Senate of Kalamata to issue a revolutionary proclamation for “Liberty.” The commander Petrobey Mavromichalis then wrote the following appeal to the Americans: “Citizens of the United States of America!…Having formed the resolution to live or die for freedom, we are drawn toward you by a just sympathy; since it is in your land that Liberty has fixed her abode, and by you that she is prized as by our fathers.” He added, “It is for you, citizens of America, to crown this glory, in aiding us to purge Greece from the barbarians, who for four hundred years have polluted the soil.” The Greek revolutionaries understood themselves as part of a universal struggle for freedom. It is this universal struggle for freedom that the Pappas Center for Hellenic Studies and Stockton University raises up and celebrates on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution in 1821. SOUL ASYLUM Biography by Arthur Levy
SOUL ASYLUM biography by Arthur Levy “It’s a crazy mixed up world out there, Someone’s always got a gun and it’s all about money You live with loneliness, or you live with somebody who’s crazy It’s just a crazy mixed up world …” (“Crazy Mixed Up World”) Chapter 1. Every Cloud Has One Renewed and revitalized, Soul Asylum founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy return to rock’s front line with THE SILVER LINING, their first new studio release since 1998’s Candy From a Stranger. That album inadvertently kicked off a seven-year sabbatical for the group, which telescoped into the death of bassist Karl Mueller in June 2005, the other founding member of the triumvirate that has steered Soul Asylum through rock’s white water for the past two decades plus. The re-emergence of the group on THE SILVER LINING is as much a reaffirmation of Soul Asylum’s commitment to the music as it is a dedication to Karl, who worked and played on the album right up until the end. They were joined in the studio by not-so-new heavyweight Minneapolis drummer Michael Bland (who has played with everyone from Paul Westerberg to Prince). The band is now complemented by Tommy Stinson on bass, a member of fellow Twin Cities band the Replacements since age 13, and a pal of Dan’s since he was in high school and Tommy in junior high. Tommy was the only friend that Karl could endorse to replace himself in the band. This hard-driving lineup was introduced for the first time in October 2005, when they played sold-out showcase dates at First Avenue in Minneapolis and the Bowery Ballroom in New York – within three days. -
The Mt. Lykaion Excavation and Survey Project Survey and Excavation Lykaion Mt
excavating at the Birthplace of Zeus The Mt. Lykaion Excavation and Survey Project by david gilman romano and mary e. voyatzis www.penn.museum/expedition 9 Village of Ano Karyes on the eastern slopes of Mt. Lykaion. The Sanctuary of Zeus is above the village and beyond view of this photograph. in the 3rd century BCE, the Greek poet Callimachus wrote a Hymn to Zeus asking the ancient and most powerful Greek god whether he was born in Arcadia on Mt. Lykaion or in Crete on Mt. Ida. My soul is all in doubt, since debated is his birth. O Zeus, some say that you were born on the hills of Ida; others, O Zeus, say in Arcadia; did these or those, O Father lie? “Cretans are ever liars.” These two traditions relating to the birthplace of Zeus were clearly known in antiquity and have been transmitted to the modern day. It was one of the first matters that the village leaders in Ano Karyes brought to our attention when we arrived there in 2003. We came to discuss logistical support for our proposed project to initiate a new excavation and survey project at the nearby Sanctuary of Zeus. Situated high on the eastern slopes of Mt. Lykaion, Ano Karyes, with a winter population of 22, would become our base of operations, and the village leaders representing the Cultural Society of Ano Karyes would become our friends and collaborators in this endeavor. We were asked very directly if we could prove that Zeus was born on Mt. Lykaion. In addition, village leaders raised another historical matter related to the ancient reference by Pliny, a 1st century CE author, who wrote that the athletic festival at Mt. -
The Development of Karyes Lakonia 1920-2020
THE DEVELOPMENT OF KARYES LAKONIA 1920-2020 PART I ( 1920-1950) A Special edition of the Karyates Association’s News Bulletin Athens, October 2019 Harris Konstantopoulos 1 INTRODUCTION The Arachova’s situation at the beginning of the 20th century Greece at the arrival of the 20th century was at a crucial point. Although during the 19th century many modern institutions had been established at the new state, these changes could only be found at the cities. At the same moment in the countryside, where the vast majority of the population still lived, almost nothing had been done in order to improve the everyday living. Thus, in Karyes-Arachova, even though the settlement may be considered as one of the biggest villages in Peloponnese, there was only a small School (Matalio), grace at the will of Athanasios Matalas, which cannot deal with the great number of pupils, a square (Rachi) and a smaller one (Vigla). At this small square, a rather small building had been constructed by the Greek State to serve as a Community Hall, Telegraph Office and Justice Hall. Meanwhile, there were no roads inside the village and the villagers had access to water only via the two fountains: in Panaghia and in Sakali. Although, there were two parishes with three priests, the only big enough church is that of Aghia Paraskevi. There were three more small ones Aghios Andreas, Panaghia and Aghios Ioannis and a new one (Aghios Nikolaos), which has been built at 1898 in order to move the cemetery from the square of Vigla, where there were no more space, in a new site outside the village. -
Hellenic Impact in Romantic Literature
www.ijcrt.org © 2018 IJCRT | Volume 6, Issue 1 March 2018 | ISSN: 2320-2882 Hellenic Impact in Romantic Literature SHOMIK DE Assistant Teacher of Haripukuria High School English (M.A., B.Ed) (NET Qualified) ABSTRACT Hellenism illustrates any of the characteristics of ancient Greek Culture, civilization, principles and ideals, including humanism, reason, the pursuit of knowledge and the arts, moderation and civic responsibility. It reflects the culture and civilization of the Hellinistic period. Hellenism divulges the admiration for and adoption of ancient Greek Culture, ideas and civilization. It unveils the national character or culture of Greece as well as the belief in and worship of the Greek gods. It can also termed as the neoclassicism. As a neoclassical movement distinct from other Roman or Greco Roman forms of neoclassicism emerging after the European Renaissance, it most often is associated with Germany and England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In Germany the preeminent figure in the movement Winckelmann, the art historian and aesthetic theoretician who first articulated what would come to be the orthodoxies of the Greek ideal in sculpture. For Winckelmann, the essence of Greek art was noble simplicity and sedate grandeur, often encapsulated in sculptures representing moments of intense emotion or tribulation. Other major figures includes Hegel, Schlegel, Schelling and Schiller. In England, the so-called “second generation” romantic poets, especially John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Lord Byron are considered examples of Hellinism. Drawing from Winckelmann(either directly or derivatively), these poets frequently turned to Greece as a model of ideal beauty, transcendent philosophy, democratic politics, and homosociality or homosexuality (for Shelley especially). -
