With his wife Sharon, he has started the Funk Family Foundation to raise money for those less fortunate.

Their current fundraising efforts have them partnered with JT Townsend, a young man who suffered a life-threatening spinal cord injury while playing in what would be his last football game at Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, FL. Doctors told JT and his family he would not survive, and he has. They told them he would never move again. He is moving his arms. They told him he would never breathe without his ventilator. He has defied those odds as well, breathing on his own for the first time since the accident just this year.

The challenge: appropriate housing. Since JT is wheelchair-bound and his family home is not accessible, he and his Mom have been living with his aunt since the accident, separated from his father and two younger sisters. Fred and his wife have made it their mission to raise $1 million to build a home for JT and his family. The PGA has supported these efforts by donating and additional $100,000 to purchase the land on which to build the house. The Funks have personally donated over $300,000 so far and continue to pledge endlessly of their time and resources to reach the $1 million goal.

“Now and then, people ask us why we want to give to J.T. Our answer is always the same…we’re not giving to J.T. We’re giving back to J.T. Getting to know this young man has provided us with gifts we never thought possible. Through J.T. we’ve learned about faith, about dignity and about resilience. Through J.T. we’ve learned about focus, about energy and about the merits of an unstoppable sense of humor. And through J.T., we have learned that physical disability has no power of the strength of the human spirit.” Fred Funk Slide 7

Sources: Sports Business Journal, October 2003 & MRI, Spring 2003 WHYWHY PARTNERPARTNER WITHWITH AA DRAFT PGAPGA TOURTOUR PROFESSIONALPROFESSIONAL “If there is such a thing as a no-risk venture in sports marketing, it is the tour professional. First, no athlete provides so many opportunities to show off a company's logo as a pro golfer, simply because there are no uniforms. The fact that NASCAR drivers try to squeeze myriad logos onto their uniforms is probably a plus for golf. Having fewer logos brings more attention to the product. And then there is the point that golfers are standing relatively still when the TV camera is on them, giving the viewer a better look.

Second, the nature of the sport creates many business possibilities not open to team athletes. The pro-am experiences on all three major circuits -- the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, and Champions Tour -- always rank at the top of any satisfaction survey of companies that invest in sports. Although Derek Jeter might be of value at a cocktail party, no client will ever get a chance to play baseball with him. Anyone who plays in a pro-am or even shares a few holes with a professional at a corporate outing has some coffee break conversation material for weeks.

And perhaps the best marketing hook for professional golfers is the stability of the game. There are no surprises. No strikes. No lockouts. What you pay for is delivered. The fact that a player under contract is not a risk to bring bad publicity to endorsement partners is a strong selling point.” BusinessWeek Online, November 2005 WHATWHAT THETHE MEDIAMEDIA ISIS SAYINGSAYING ABOUTABOUT FREDFRED FUNK…FUNK… DRAFT “One reason Funk is easy to root for: he symbolizes the blue-collar worker on the Tour. And if you're watching a tournament on TV, there's a very good chance you'll see Funk. Since '90, he's played in more tourneys than any other golfer.” SI.com, PGA Tour pros that are easy to root for, May 2005 “What Funk took home was impressive -- $925,000, a Skins Game record haul. What Funk brought was even more important -- a fresh enthusiasm and sense of fun that gave the tired old Skins Game a much-needed booster shot in the arm.” SI.com, Funk-y Bunch, November 2005 “Here is a guy who enjoys playing professional golf. He enjoys the fact that fans love him and that is why the people respond to him they way they do. ‘Funk’s Punks’ know the enthusiasm they bestow upon him is appreciated. Why cheer for someone who cares more about his or her tax return than you, the paying customer? Not that fans need to hear this, but stick with the Funker. He’s worth cheering for.” Jim Brighters, Golf Editor, Sports Network “Funk is an unwonted champ, but hardly an unwanted one. Followed by a band of brothers known as Funk’s Punks, he is a man of the people, a guy who cherishes the value of such a title. After all, it’s his unusually cool surname that first makes most Punks aware of the man known as Chickenhawk. What makes them stick around is his unusually cool personality…” ESPN.com, Funk is feel-good story at TPC, March 2005 When Fred was standing over that putt on 18, it was as quiet as I’ve ever heard it on the final hole at THE PLAYERS Championship. There have been important putts there before. But this was different. You could almost hear the silent prayers from the stands trying to will the ball into the hole. I was far enough away that I was able to say out loud ‘Let yourself do it Fred.’…I really wanted him to win. ‘So did everybody else,’ a guy told me at the gas station later. I laughed, but got his point. Funk’s popularity cuts across all kinds of lines through the gallery. Everybody can relate to his game and his story. Now that story is a little richer. The right guy won.” Sam Kouvaris, Sam’s Commentary, March 2005 WHATWHAT THETHE FANSFANS AREARE SAYINGSAYING ABOUTABOUT FREDFRED FUNK…FUNK…DRAFT “I was truly touched by your victory. You seem to be a true person and a good family man. Competing in golf myself, I surely felt that you had to grind everything within your heart and soul to earn this crown. Thank you for the good show and even more for being such a great role model. Congratulations.” Martin Ferland in an email to PGATOUR.com, March 2005 “Congratulations, Fred. This was a win for the ages. As exciting as Jack’s win at Augusta in ’86.” Michael Bua, in an email to PGATOUR.com, March 2005 “It’s great to see nice things happen to nice people. This has to be the most popular win on TOUR since (Fred) Couples in Houston. Don’t hold back the tears, we didn’t. Congrats. Jeff and Mancha Hawkins, La Quinta, “Congratulations, Fred! No one is more deserving than you. I know you’ll be receiving ‘tons’ of emails and congratulatory accolades from everyone. However, I’d like to say that we met at the held at Sahalee Golf Club a few years back. It was during the Wednesday practice round and you came by and gave my son and I your autograph. What is most impressive and memorable is that you looked us straight in the eye and chatted with us like we were old friends. I truly appreciated that gesture and will always regard you as one of the people’s champions. Congratulations! Nelson H. Harano, in an email to PGATOUR.com, March 2005 “I recall clearly seeing you hit the ball closest to the pin on the 17th hole on Thursday and one of the commentators mentioning how wild the galleries would get if you went on to win the tournament. It sent shivers thinking of the possibility. You are the most deserved (winner) of THE PLAYERS Championship that I have seen in my 20 years of following the game. You are an inspiration to many… I hope that many of the young players coming up learn from you in the way you diligently go about your work and your happy go lucky swagger. I hope you go on to win many more tournaments and continue to represent your country with the same energy. I am so happy for you, Mr. Funk. Congratulations.
