WINE Your Business Forward friend sent me a picture of neon sign that read: “Save the Earth. It’s the only planet A with wine.” Although beer and spirits sales outpace wine sales in Saskatchewan, wine sales consistently see stronger year over year growth. Successful liquor retailers and restaurants lean into this pro-wine reality in at least two ways:

Retailers expand their selection. Our research has shown that Alberta liquor retailers draw so many tens of millions of Saskatchewan dollars every year because of product selection more than product pricing. Hunkering down with a couple widely known brands in your store thinking that will satisfy a growing demand for wine, is like lighting a candle thinking that will give you all the heat you need for the winter. You can’t sell what’s not on your shelf.

Restaurants and retailers pay attention to quality. Reason: customers increasingly want Doug Reichel Doug Reichel Wine Marketing Inc. quality. Yes, there are customers who will choose quantity over quality, and yes, we all appreciate lower prices, especially on a wine we enjoy. But just as our tastes evolve when it comes to the quality of food we consume (once a cheap fast food burger was a treat, now it turns our stomach), so, too, consumers are increasingly aware of the difference between plonk and more carefully crafted wines. I have often said that you will never offend someone who knows little or nothing about wine by offering them a quality wine, but you will always offend someone who knows something about wine by offering them poor quality wine. Quality does not need to be wildly expensive but quality wines draw consumers who are prepared to spend.

A WIN FOR HOTELS in Airbnb Regulations

he City of Vancouver recently passed legislation to regulate T short-term rentals, allowing rentals only in one’s principal residence. This is great news for the hotel industry as this will eliminate the commercial side of Airbnb’s business (and other similar platforms) in Vancouver, which competes directly with hotels. This legislation is critical because it sets a precedent for other Canadian cities. The City noted that enforcement is critical and it is their intention to ensure platforms are held accountable. The Saskatchewan Hotel & Hospitality Association will continue to work with our members to advocate for similar legislation in communities around Saskatchewan. “We would like to commend the City of Vancouver in their recent move to restrict short term rentals to operator’s primary residences. These regulations are an important measure towards curbing the commercial activities of company’s like Airbnb and sets a direction that creates a level playing for all operations that work in this space. We have recommended to our provincial and municipal governments that they recognize the precedent set by the City of Vancouver and implement similar regulations and legislation”.
