She served as President of the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA) for eight years (2003–2011). Jan is an active member of the International Literacy Association (USA) serving on several key committees, and review boards. Her research interests range from early literacy development to professional learning and practices. She is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators and a Life Member of the Australian College of Educators (ACE), Primary English Teaching Association Australia (PETAA) and the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA.) In 2008 she was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame in the USA. SampleGEORGINA BARTON lectures in English and literacy education in the School of Education and Professional Studies at Griffith University, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Georgina was a classroom teacher and literacy educator in schools for over 20 years, including teaching English in South India. She has worked with teachers, particularly in socially-disadvantaged areas, in developing literacy programs to improve students’ outcomes using arts-based practices. She researches in the areas of literacy, multimodality, teaching of writing, arts and music education, and teacher education with a focus on the international student experience. Georgina is currently the Vice-President of ALEA’s Meanjin Local Council and co-organises the Meanjin Writers’ Camp. CYNTHIA BROCK is a Senior Lecturer in English Literacy at the University of South Australia. She currently serves as an ALEA (South Australia) local council member. She studies the literacy learning opportunities of primary children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and she explores ways to work with pre- and in-service teachers to foster the literacy learning of children from non-dominant backgrounds. She has conducted qualitative research in different cultural contexts including the United States, Australia, Thailand, Loas, Spain, Chile and Costa Rica. vii Acknowledgements An edited book just doesn’t happen. Many people are involved in the process from the inception to the final book. We three editors live in different states in Australia and had never met. However over the period of the year we have come to know, trust, and support each other as we brought the book to fruition. We have thoroughly enjoyed working together, learning from each other and from our many contributors. It truly has been a very rewarding experience. We want to acknowledge and thank ALEA National Council for initiating the concept underpinning this book. In particular, we must acknowledge our friend and colleague Beryl Exley, ALEA’s Publication Director, for inviting us to be co-editors, for trusting in our expertise to get the job done, and for quietly guiding and supporting us when needed. An editedSample book needs contributors and we are indebted to our 33 writers. Our task was made easier by their willingness to write on our suggested topics, work within our deadlines, respond quickly to any suggestions made and, their overall expertise as educators. For this study, we first used the concept of “apparatus” in Foucauldian (1977) and Agambenian sense (2009).     Five Components of Effective Oral Language Instruction 1 Introduction “Oral Language is the child’s first, most important, and most frequently used structured medium of communication. It is the primary means through which each individual child will be enabled to structure, to evaluate, to describe and to control his/her experience. In addition, and most significantly, oral language is the primary mediator of culture, the way in which children locate themselves in the world, and define themselves with it and within it” (Cregan, 1998, as cited in Archer, Cregan, McGough, Shiel, 2012) At its most basic level, oral language is about communicating with other people. It involves a process of utilizing thinking, knowledge and skills in order to speak and listen effectively. As such, it is central to the lives of all people. Oral language permeates every facet of the primary school curriculum. The development of oral language is given an importance as great as that of reading and writing, at every level, in the curriculum. It has an equal weighting with them in the integrated language process. Although the Curriculum places a strong emphasis on oral language, it has been widely acknowledged that the implementation of the Oral Language strand has proved challenging and “there is evidence that some teachers may have struggled to implement this component because the underlying framework was unclear to them” (NCCA, 2012, pg. 10) In light of this and in order to provide a structured approach for teachers, a suggested model for effective oral language instruction is outlined in this booklet. It consists of five components, each of which is detailed on subsequent pages.

By framing the book as a series of questions, they invite interaction and participation in its telling. Mem is well known for carefully considering the weight and merit of each word she writes, agonising over its placement. Her methods are evident in the tight, streamlined structure of this book, leaving the gaps and pauses that have allowed Kerry Argent to maximise her gifts as a visual storyteller. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mem Fox was born in Melbourne, Australia, but spent some of her childhood in Africa. She wrote Possum Magic while taking a second degree in children's literature, and it went on to become the best-selling children's book in Australia.

As adults when we reflect on our experience of learning mathematics through primary and secondary school, we tend to think of it in compartments in terms of the lessons and topics we encountered. If asked to list them, many adults would suggest that mathematics is arithmetic, geometry and algebra, maybe statistics or calculus. We might consider mathematics as being divided into pure or applied mathematics. However, mathematics can also be considered in a broader sense, involving problem-solving, searching for patterns and comm- unicating ideas. Mathematics is one of the core subjects in the primary school curriculum, along with English and science. It is a government recommendation that it is taught every day and it is viewed as an essential life skill. What is numeracy? The term numeracy has been widely adopted in primary schools recently, rather than mathematics. Numeracy is a recently coined term, being a contrac- tion of ‘numerical literacy’.
