National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Department of English Language and Literature MA Programme “Linguistics: Theory and Applications” Power, Powerlessness and Empowerment in African-American and White Performers' Hip-Hop Rhetoric: A Contrastive Corpus-driven Critical Discourse Analysis. Panagiotis Delis ID:217008 Supervisor Ourania Hatzidaki Date of Submission February 2019 Declaration This submission is my own work. Any quotation from, or description of, the work of others is acknowledged herein by reference to the sources, whether published or unpublished. ii Abstract The present corpus-driven critical discourse analysis study sets out to observe the rampant transformation of the hip hop genre diachronically, examining all song lyrics from the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop music chart archives from the 1960s to 2010s. It also examines the shifts in rhetoric within gender- (male and female) and race- oriented (black and white) groups. This study charts the rhetoric of US hip hop in order to reveal ideological patterns, similarities or differences between social actors, especially the artists themselves and those directly addressed or referred to by the artists (addressors and addressees, as are categorized here). The main objective of the research is to locate and examine the artists’ recurring linguistic choices, identify and critically account for the full range of significant characteristics of the two features (race and gender) under scrutiny within the genre of hip hop, and also their evolution in time. The analysis affords a deeper insight into the tremendous rhetorical changes of a set of culturally- and emotionally-loaded, mostly stigmatized terms, which are representative of archetypal asymmetric relations between social actors.

  • Daniel 1)? by Doing So We Are Conforming to Another Person‘S Liking and Losing Our Individuality
UNIVERSITY OF CONNEC TICUT STUDENT SUPPORT SERV ICES PORTAL SUMMER 2007 Dayna Tran ~ First Place ~ The Autonomy of Immortal Technique Hip hop was once used as a way for the community of minorities to engage in politics. As times passed, hip hop became more known to the media and was changed. Hip hop went from representing the voice of the people to controlling ―corporate white men who really don‘t understand what the culture is really about‖ (Chennault). Hip hop was changed from a form of an artistic expression to a way of making money. The majority of people identify rap as a negative music genre that portrays sex, drugs, and money. Although there are a lot of positive elements in hip hop, the negatives are far more noticeable and far more numerous (Harris). What people don‘t know about rap is that there is a difference between the more commonly known gangster rap (mainstream rap) and underground rap. While most mainstream rap artists of today utilize rap as a way to entertain and make money in the music industry, Immortal Technique isolates himself from conforming to the mainstream genre, and uses rap as a way to express his perception on the issues of our society. In his albums Revolutionary Vol.1 and Revolutionary Vol.2, Immortal Technique separates his music from what we know as ―rap‖ and targets the issues of poverty, class conflict, and corruption within our government. In the twentieth Century, rap music and hip hop culture played a large role in shaping the United States and gave voice to minorities ―who had previously existed on the periphery of the nation‘s consciousness‖ (Bynoe).

Now, this wasn’t my first attempt at trying to get his attention. If you had my phone, you would be able to scroll up and see that I had sent him half a dozen messages prior to this one but received no reply. After showing my friend Reilly and listening to her make fun of me and tell me I would never get an answer from our mutual favorite artist, I tried to prove her wrong by messaging him again on May 18th.
