THE TEMENOS ACADEMY “John Michell 1933-2009” Author: Joscelyn Godwin Source: Temenos Academy Review 12 (2009) pp. 250-253 Published by The Temenos Academy Copyright © Joscelyn Godwin, 2009 The Temenos Academy is a Registered Charity in the United Kingdom www.temenosacademy.org 250-253 Michell Godwin:Layout 1 3/11/09 13:30 Page 250 John Michell (1933–2009) Joscelyn Godwin ‘ ut how shall we bury you?’ asked Crito. ‘In any way you like,’ said B Socrates, ‘if you can catch me, and I do not escape you.’ Who could possibly catch John Michell, alive or dead? The Church of England, which buried him, or the Glastonbury pagans who cele - brated his birthdays and wedding? The Forteans on both sides of the Atlantic, knowing who was his favourite philosopher after Plato? The pilgrims whom he fluently guided around Holy Russia? The Old Eton - ians and the caste to which he was born? The old rock stars who knew him as pictured in David Bailey’s book of Sixties portraits, Goodbye Baby and Amen? Ufologists, honoured by his very first book? Ley hunters and earth mysteries folk? Students of crop-circles and other anomalous pheno mena? Sacred geometers and ancient metrologists? Grown-up children who see through every emperor’s new clothes? By common standards John’s life was mildly eccentric, his notions very peculiar. For one thing, he was nocturnal. The flat at the top of his Notting Hill house seemed a philosopher’s eyrie as one watched the sun setting over London’s roofscape. Then as the candles were lit, the curtains drawn, it was more of a hobbit smial, or Badger’s burrow.

  • Detective Fiction And
Muff Andersson & Elsie Cloete Fixing the guilt: Detective fiction Muff Andersson is a researcher at the and the No.1 Ladies’ Detective University of South Africa’s Graduate School while Elsie Cloete teaches Agency series in the Department of English, Wits School of Education, University of the Witwatersrand. Email: [email protected] [email protected] Detective fiction and the No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series This article examines the emergence of popular detective fiction in Africa as part of a new third wave of literature. While the new wave is a very particular response to conditions on the continent it nevertheless taps into the main streams of detective fiction that have emerged from Britain and in some respects the USA in the last hundred years. In particular this article focuses on the No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith and examines ways in which the postcolony reproduces the colony and how, in some respects the erstwhile empire desires to produce the postcolony. Key words: African literature, detective fiction, Alexander McCall Smith. Introduction To date, two distinct waves in African Literature have been identified. The first wave is defined as writing back to colonialism and includes elite authors such as Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Chinua Achebe while the second wave manifests as post-colonial dis- illusionment, exemplified by Dambudzo Marechera’s writing. Andersson (2005a) has contended that a third wave is emerging from where the second wave left off and can most clearly be identified in African popular detective fiction. This is an organic movement that works with audiences’ own experiences through intertextual refer- ences to political memory, witty word play, reversals, cinema noir and theatre of the absurd techniques, its techniques being a form of resistance to what Andersson calls the “dialogic violence” that arises from the contradictions between the claims of official memory and the experiences of popular memory.

  • An English Song Line
An English Songline by JAG Maw October 1986, a steamy college cellar somewhere under Cambridge. Lighting way low, amps buzzing gently, student chatter picked up by the stage mics, PA system on the edge of feedback. I was sitting on a monitor with a post-gig pint and talking rubbish to anyone prepared to listen. A bloke sidled up to Join the chat. I was immediately impressed by his leather Jacket. Not some chained-up bogus biker Job: this one had lapels. Like David Sylvian’s on the Quiet Life cover, only black. Very cool. But hang on a minute. Is that? I squinted. Out of each sleeve poked the tiny, whiskered and unmistakable face of a rat. Each would tip-toe occasionally down a thumb to sniff the air, have a rather pleased sip of beer and then disappear back into its sleeve. A Londoner taught to identify these creatures with the Plague, I raised an eyebrow. The rats were introduced to me as Sly and Robbie, and leather Jacket bloke introduced himself as a guitarist. “I think you need a new one,” he said. A new guitarist? It was hard to disagree. As the singer, I had decided that my Job was to write inscrutable lyrics and then deliver them with unshakable conviction. Musically, however, I relied on the honourable excuses of punk rock. My guitar tended to run out of ideas after five chords (that’s including the minors), and then turn into a stage prop. I went off to confer with the other band members, and told them about leather Jacket guitarist and Sly and Robbie.

  • The Private Life of the Series Detective
Karin Molander Danielsson The Private Life of the Series Detective Like Philip Marlowe, the detective of contemporary detective series may keep a bottle in a drawer, but if he does, he very likely also has an ac- knowledged drinking problem. Similarly, if he meets a sexy blonde in a bar, she probably is his steady but problematic girlfriend, or the mother of his children. There is nothing one-dimensional about contemporary detec- tives; they are seldom simply tough, or intellectual, or street smart. Whether male or female, straight or gay, they may be tough but vulnerable, intellectual and depressed, street smart but self-conscious, and afflicted with ulcers, diabetes, divorce, sick children and relatives with Alzheimer’s. In short, the former cardboard figure has over the last thirty years or so turned into a dynamic character, with a private life and personal problems. The detective series, moreover, has developed from a chronicle of murder cases to a life story in installments, the private life of the series detective. In what I see as a clear shift of focus from detecting to detective, from case to life story, character development is a key feature. Dorothy L. Sayers predicted this future for the detective novel in her essay “Gaudy Night”1 and heralded it in the novels that depict the developing love affair between Lord Peter and Harriet Vane. However, other characters in Golden Age detective fiction were generally sketchily drawn and unlikely either to de- velop from book to book or to let themselves be influenced by the cases or the people they investigated.

  • A Postcolonial Response to Modern Representations of the San in Alexander Mccall Smith’S No
108 If We Are Too Small to See or You Have Forgotten If We Are Too Small to See or You Have Forgotten: A postcolonial response to modern representations of the San in Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series Roie Thomas1, Australian Catholic University Australia Abstract Alexander McCall Smith’s enormously popular fiction series set in Botswana (2000-11) appears on superficial analysis to represent the San people benignly, even affectionately. Neil Graves (2010) submits that The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency achieves an image of “untainted and uncorrupted” Botswana through a “three-stage process of engagement, disarmament and dismissal, leaving behind a saccharine utopian Western fantasy of primitive primordial Africa” (15). However, deconstruction via a postcolonial lens shows the depictions in this text to be insidiously harmful in the light of the San’s social and political disenfranchisement in Botswana since independence. Six tropes from David Spurr’s seminal work The Rhetoric of Empire (1993) are deployed to position the various representations of the San children in this series firmly within a postcolonial critique, since such classifications clearly define the particular nuances and levels of the characters’ literary depictions. A recent compilation by Lonely Planet Publications (2010) which devotes a glossy double- page spread to every country on earth, lists at the head of its Botswana section the mandatory consumption for tourists prior to visiting Botswana, namely the 1980 film The Gods Must Be Crazy and the BBC mini-series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (59). Both film and fiction series have generated substantial fascination with - and tourism to Botswana.
