The Career in Sports Forum provides col- lege athletes with a broad scope of the career tracks available within the sports business, with the primary focus on college athletics. The forum provided student-athletes interac- tive experiences with successful individuals in the sports business and a peek into their day- to-day duties and responsibilities. Forum attendees heard from various key- note speakers and panelists from around the country, highlighted by Jason Burton, head women’s basketball coach at the Texas A&M University-Commerce; Clyde Doughty Jr, di- rector of athletics at Bowie State University; Felicia Martin, vice president of the NCAA Eli- gibility Center; and Craig McPhail, director of athletics at Lees-McRae College. The participants also learned best prac- tices for gaining employment and gathering a better understanding of what future expecta- tions will be once they get a job in sports. The four-day forum gave Carpenter plenty to think about. “We heard from athletic directors, coach- es, marketing, fund raising and from various departments within the NCAA,” Carpenter said. Carpenter, a Human Development and Family Studies major, said he would like to work with high school-aged kids. “What really stood out for me was the leadership part, knowing the impact you could have on your respective family, team and uni- versity,” Carpenter said. “I would like to men- tor kids. UW-Stout Blue Devils LEGENDARY BASKETBALL COACH PASSES AWAY Dwain Mintz will be remembered not only as a basketball coach, but as a mentor, teach- er and family man. The legendary UW-Stout men’s basketball coach passed away Oct. 11. Mintz is the winningest men’s basketball coach in Stout history and is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men’s basketball coach- es wins list with a record of 385-280. Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Mintz turned out 26 all- conference first team players. Four years after Mintz arrived at UW- Stout, the school won its first conference title in 20 years. The Blue Devils won the 1966 championship with a 20-3 overall record (15-1 in conference play). The 1969 title team (22-4, 14-2 conference) featured three all-conference first team players, including league Player of the Year Mel Coleman, and made a deep run to the fourth round of the NAIA national tournament. Head Coach Clayt Birmingham

Clayt Birmingham is in his ninth year as the Blue Devil head coach, taking over as head coach in 2010 after three years as the UW-Stout defensive coordinator. The 2017 Blue Devils exploded onto the national scene with a 25-22 win over fourth-ranked St. Thomas in September. Stout vaulted to the D3football.com Top 25 poll and ranked as high as 22nd and moved into the AFCA Top 25 during the season. The Blue Devils’ defense lead the WIAC in rushing defense, passing defense, total defense and opponent third down conversions. Stout ranked nationally in the NCAA Division III, finishing 10th in red-zone defense and eighth in third down conversions allowed. Stout had three players named to the All-WIAC first team - Caleb Adams, Isaiah Hardy, and Josh Johnson - and Adams was an all-region selection at offensive line. In total, Stout had 13 players chosen as All-WIAC. The 2016 Blue Devils produced three All-WIAC selections in place kicker Drew Pearson, who was also the WIAC co-special teams player of the year, punter Clark Riedel and offensive lineman Kane’ala Atchison-Keolanui. Pearson had a breakout year, earning first team D3football.com and second team AFCA All-America honors. Pearson was one of the top kickers in the country, and was a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Award. Riedel and Atchison-Keolanui earned all-region honors. With a team seemingly at times held together with masking tape and glue, the Blue Devils’ offense put up some numbers in 2015 that hadn’t been seen for a while. Behind a healthy Hank Kujak at quarterback, the Blue Devils averaged 267.7 yards per contest through the air. Offensively, the Blue Devil averaged nearly 400 yards of total offense (396.9). Stout scored more than 30 points in five games. Kujak inked a contract to play professionally in Germany. Offensive lineman Kane’ala Atchison-Keolanui was a first team all-WIAC pick and earned all-region honors. Wide receiver Brian Alvarez and defensive back Collin Laursen were second team all-WIAC choices. Four players earned honorable mention honors. Collin Laursen was an academic all-region selection and was a National Football Foundation Honor Society selection. Injury played a huge part in the Blue Devils’ 2014 campaign, starting off with losing quarterback Hank Kujak in the first game and promising second year running back Adolfo Pacheco early in the season, along with a number of players on boths sides of the line. Senior Tanner Kuehn stepped into a full- time starting role in the offensive backfield along with his ever-presence in special team play. Kuehn earned first team all-WIAC honors as an all-purpose player. Garrett Peterson took over the quarterback role midway through the season and earned WIAC player of the week honors after a career-performance in a win over UW-River Falls. Linebacker Luke Bakkum, who led the league in tackles and tackles for loss and was second in sacks, and defensive lineman Jamie Rohrig earned all-district honors, Six Blue Devils were named to the all-WIAC team. Defensive back Tyler Naatz was a National Football Foundation Honor Society selection. The Blue Devils in 2013 had nine selections to the All-WIAC team. Offensive lineman Devon Greiber earned all-region honors. Greiber and fellow of- fensive lineman both played in post-season all-star games. Greiber was drafted by a professional indoor football league, but elected not to play. Tailback Adolfo Pacheco gained 965 rushing yards, the most by a freshman since the 2000 season, and the most by a true freshman in more than 40 years. Defensive lineman David Goebel was a National Football Foundation Honor Society selection. The Blue Devils in 2012 had seven selections to the All-WIAC team and running back Eric Brown rushed his way into the UW-Stout record book, finishing his two year career as the 15th leading rusher with 1391 yards. Birmingham has always stressed community involvement to his players, and the Blue Devils answered with hundreds of hours of community service to the Menomonie and Dunn County community. Tight end Josh Peterson wrapped up his career, and was a National Football Foundation Honor Society selection and also played in the annual Aztec Bowl. The Blue Devils highlighted the 2011 season with 10 selections to the All-WIAC team as Stout went 5-5 overall. The Blue Devils picked up their first win over UW-Stevens Point since the 2003 season when they knocked off the Pointers - Birmingham’s alma mater - 22-19 in Stevens Point. Four-year starting offensive lineman Tyler Butzler, an all-region selection, was in NFL camps in the spring. The squad also logged more than 680 hours of commu- nity service throughout the school year. The 2010 season saw UW-Stout go 6-4 overall and finish third in the WIAC. Eleven players earned all-conference honors and tight end Patrick Mengelkoch was an All-American as well as being named to the AFCA/Allstate Good Works Team. Birmingham had been with the Blue Devils for three seasons (2007, 2008, 2009) as the defensive coordinator. Birmingham took the Blue Devil defense from the eighth ranked defense in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) to second in 2009. Of 235 NCAA Division III teams, Stout’s defense ranked 42nd in 2009. Birmingham, a former all-conference defensive back at UW-Stevens Point, has coached on the college level at Division I, II and III schools, as well as coached one summer professionally in Europe. The 2000 Broncos were 9-3 and won the West Division of the Mid-American Conference. His duties included coaching the defensive secondary, film breakdown and defensive quality control. He spent the summer of 1998 as the head coach of the Stockholm’s Swedish National Championship team in the European Federation of American Football, leading the team to an 11-3 record. Birmingham’s first coaching experience was at his alma mater UW-Stevens Point from 1996-97 where he coached the secondary and outside linebackers, including the Detroit Lions 1999 sixth round draft pick Clint Kriewaldt. A four year starter at Stevens Point, Birmingham was a two-time All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) defensive back at UW-Stevens Point (1995, 1994). While not leading until the waning seconds of the game, Stout stayed within striking range of the potent Tommies and captured the lead with 1:27 left on a 12-yard pass from Sturgeon to Josh Malone. Sturgeon stretched the lead to three points with a two-point pass conversion. The Blue Devil offense placed junior offensive lineman Caleb Adams on the All-WIAC first team and running back Rayshawn Graham and wide receiver McDonald to the second team. Adams also earned All-Region honors. Quarterback Jay Alston finished fourth in the WIAC in passing and total offense. The 2015 season saw the Blue Devils reach passing numbers they have not for several years. Behind a healthy Hank Kujak at quarterback, the Blue Devils averaged 267.7 yards per contest through the air. Offensively, the Blue Devil averaged nearly 400 yards of total offense (396.9). Stout scored more than 30 points in five games and threw for more than 300 yards in five games, and topped out the year with a 418-yard passing game against Loras College, Stout’s first 400-plus yard passing game since Nov. 7, 1998. Kujak earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors and inked a contract to play professionally in Germany for the Bielefeld Bulldogs, the same team Vogler played for. Offensive lineman Kane’ala Atchison-Keolanui was a first team all-WIAC pick and earned all-region honors. Wide receiver Brian Alvarez was a second team all-WIAC pick and tight end Reggie Kujak was an honorable mention selection. In his inaugural season with the Blue Devils in 2014, Vogler was put to the test early when starting quarterback Hank Kujak was lost for the season in the opening game due to injury. The Blue Devils responded with Aaron Koerner and Garrett Peterson, both sophomore quarterbacks who had not yet thrown a collegiate pass in a game. Peterson would go on to start the final six games of the season and was named the WIAC player of the week and USA Football impact player of the week after going 26-of-39 for 324 yards and four TD passes in a come-from-behind win over UW-River Falls. Vogler joins UW-Stout after a stellar four-year career at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he led the Bulldogs to an NCAA Division II champion- ship as the teams’ quarterback in 2010. Vogler played in all 54 possible games and started 52 games, going 46-6 as the starting quarterback. Vogler was a three-time all-conference selection, two-time all-region and two-time All-American. The Bulldogs won four NSIC titles during Vogler’s four seasons (2009, 10, 11, 12). After coaching professionally as the offensive coordinator in Germany with the Bielefeld Bulldogs (14-2) during the summer of 2013, Vogler returned to Duluth to serve as a volunteer assistant coach, working with the defensive secondary. Vogler also had a short stint at Western Illinois University as a graduate assistant, where he was reunited with his collegiate head coach, Bob Nielsen, before joining the Blue Devils. In addition to finishing second all-time among Bulldogs in total offense yards (10,486) and third in passing yards (7,583), Vogler completed a school- record 63.2 record percent of his career passes and also ran for more yards (2,903) than any quarterback in team history. The Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native was was 46-6 as a starter since assuming that role as a first-year freshman three games into the 2010 sea- son. Those 46 victories are a UMD program best and were tops among all 2012 NCAA II quarterbacks. A member of the Beyond College Sports College Network All-American Team (honorable mention), the Don Hansen All-Super Region 3 Team (third team) and the NSIC All-North Division (second team) in 2012, Vogler quarterbacked UMD to one NCAA II national title, three Northern Sun intercollegiate Conference overall championships and four NCAA II post-season appearances (going 7-3 in 10 games). 2018 UW-Stout Coaching Staff
