McDonald earned all-conference honors as a junior, both as a receiver and as an all-purpose player. In 2017, McDonald hauled in 36 receptions for 587 yards 2018 WIAC Final Standings and five TDs. He also ran for a TD on a 71-yard scamper. The Blue Devils return four-of-five starting WIAC All offensive linemen, but will need to find replacements at running back and tight end. Defensively, Stout UW-Whitewater 7-0 12-1 returns experience across their defense as well, returning eight starters, including all-conference picks UW-La Crosse 5-2 7-3 linebacker and co-captain Luke Wilz, defensive lineman Aaron Wisecup and cornerback Kierre Rhodes. The Blue Devils finished 2018 at 5-5 overall and fourth 2018 MIAC Final Standings in the always-tough WIAC. WHO’S WHO: St. John’s: The Johnnies return two D3football.com first team All-Americans in MIAC All quarterback Jackson Erdmann and offensive guard Dan Greenhack. Erdmann was the D3football.com St. John’s 8-0 12-1 offensive player of the year. Saint John’s was picked to repeat as conference champions in the 2019 Bethel 7-1 11-2 MIAC Preseason Coaches’ poll released Thursday, Aug. 22. The Johnnies earned seven of the nine St. Thomas 6-2 8-2 first-place votes and 63 total points to finish first in the poll. St. Thomas received the other two first- Gustavus Adolphus 5-3 6-4 place votes and 56 total points to finish second, four points ahead of third-place Bethel. SJU (12-1, 8-0 Concordia-Moorhead 4-4 5-5 MIAC) won its MIAC-record 33rd conference title and made its 29th postseason appearance (25th in St. Olaf College 3-5 5-5 Division III) in 2018 and ended the season ranked as high as No. 3 nationally by D3football.com. The Carleton College 2-6 3-7 Johnnies advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, where they fell by a 21-18 score to the eventual national Hamline University 1-7 1-9 champion, Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas). The Johnnies out-gained the Crusaders 465-315, including 418 Augsburg University 0-8 2-8 yards through the air. The Johnnies return seven starters on each side of the ball, including the 2018 2019 WIAC Schedule Gagliardi Trophy recipient and D3football.com Offensive Player of the Year, quarterback Erdmann, and Saturday, Sept. 7 two-time All-American guard Greenheck in 2019. Both were consensus preseason All-Americans this Stevens Point at John Carroll, 1 p.m. summer. A River Falls at Minnesota-Morris, 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 two-time All-American, Greenheck has started each of the Johnnies’ last 24 games at right guard. SJU Oshkosh at Salisbury, 12 p.m. averaged 47.5 points per game and SJU’s offense averaged 491.8 yards per contest (192.2 rushing Whitewater at Concordia-Moorhead, 12 p.m. and 299.5 passing) last fall. The 491.8 yards per game were the second-most in an SJU season (495.2 Eau Claire at St. Norbert, 1 p.m. average in 1993) and the 299.5 passing yards per game were the most since the school record set in Wabash at Stevens Point, 1 p.m. 1994 (314.5 avg.). Saint John’s was recently ranked No. 18 out of ESPN’s top 50 programs over the Illinois Wesleyan at La Crosse, 1 p.m. last 150 years. Gustavus Adolphus at Stout, 1 p.m. THE SERIES: The Johnnies hold a 3-0 lead in the series. The teams have met only twice before in Bethel at River Falls, 1 p.m. Menomonie, with the latest meeting coming in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Playoffs that saw the Johnnies defeat the Blue Devils, 26-19, at frigid Nelson Field. The teams first met during the 1923 season when the Johnnies took a 12-6 victory. This will be the third meeting of the two teams in Meno- monie and their fourth overall meeting. The teams have not played more than one game on the same field. The 1923 game in Menomonie was in all likelihood played at the Fairgrounds. The 2000 meeting was played on Nelson Field. The 2018 meeting was played in Collegeville, Minn., Stout’s first time ever playing at St. John’s. This year’s meeting is at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.
