The infor­ mation contained herein is drawn from secondary sources, the oral testimony of Micronesians, and from personal experience. The paper has several sections. First there is a gen~ral introduction which attempts to describe what Micronesia is with regards to the various political and ethnic groups. Then there is a section on Japanese fortifications. In this section the background o~ how the fortifications came to be erected is given. This may be helpful in locating present qay sites as well as informants who will have more information. Finally, there is a section on current political developments. This political situation is constantly changing, so this section will be rather short-lived in accuracy, but it provides a framework.
