Your work area The Raine Study cohort is one of the largest successful prospective cohorts of pregnancy, childhood, adolescence and now young adulthood to be carried out anywhere in the world. The Raine Study is a rich resource for researchers. Prospective longitudinal data has been collected at multiple time-points over pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. There are numerous stored biological samples. There are established collaborative research networks across a wide variety of disciplines. The cohort participants (approximately 2000) are now around 30 years of age and maintain a keen sense of commitment to the Raine Study. The Raine Study is a valuable resource for Western Australian researchers. There are currently more than 150 researchers from 13 broad areas of research utilising the Raine Study.

The Raine Study is an Unincorporated Joint Venture (UJV) between The University of , , Edith Cowan University, , Notre Dame University, Women and Infants Research Foundation and the Telethon Kids Institute.

Reporting structure Reports to: Director, Raine Study Dotted line reports to: Nil Direct reports: Nil Dotted line reports: Scientific Manager Your role The Scientific Director provides leadership and strategic direction for the Raine Study’s research activities. The Scientific Director’s responsibilities include maximising utilisation of the Raine Study resources, maintaining productivity of high quality researchers, establishing and maintaining national and international collaboration and creating research opportunities for the Raine Study. Your key responsibilities • Stand in for the Director as required • Develop and oversee strategic planning of the science portfolio of the Raine Study • Encourage and support applications to national competitive grant schemes • Oversee and contribute to ethics applications and consents to data linkage and commercial funding of projects • Work with the Data and Biosamples Manager to develop management plans for robust genetics data and biosample curation facilities, processes, and security. • Together with the Director, identify and develop research ideas • Maintain high quality science and feasibility of research projects • Lead planning of research project management process • Oversee Scientific Manager with initial project proposal reviews and work with researchers in developing suitable proposals • Lead reviews of research topics based on global burdens, hot topics, knowledge gaps • Gain research discovery ideas from translation and research partners and cohort participants • Work with the Scientific Manager to support researcher development • Chair the Scientific Review Committee • Lead Special Interest Group • Work with Scientific Manager to develop Special Interest Group strategic plans including the use of existing data • Identify and engage suitable researchers • Promote scientific reputation of Raine Study • Work with Scientific Manager to ensure project and manuscript quality, data resource quality, research process efficiency • Oversee the planning and the development of tracking Impact based on traditional citations and alternative metrics • Liaise with Communications Manager to develop appropriate messages including developing key impact stories, building community knowledge of the Raine Study findings and implications • Interact with media • Work with Director to promote utilisation of Raine Study findings for policy and practice • Promote interaction with policy and service providers • Supervise Scientific Manager • Oversee and implement scientific misconduct policies

Your specific work capabilities (selection criteria) Essential: • PhD degree in epidemiology or a related health science field. • Substantial experience in health-related research. • Strong understanding of methods relating to epidemiological studies and public health. • Demonstrated experience and expertise in leadership and management of research teams.

• Demonstrated ability to efficiently publish high quality scholarly research papers. • Willingness to seek funding for research projects. • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in a research environment. • Excellent organisation skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities and to meet deadlines.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability and experience in communicating scientific results to scientific colleagues and the general public. Special requirements (selection criteria)
