COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS

COMMENCEMENT

Spring 1997 To the College of Liberal Arts Spring, 1997 Graduating Class:

We come together today- family and friends, students and teachers- to celebrate a major milestone in your life. You have studied hard for four years (or a few more) and have achieved the wonderful goal we honor today: a baccalaureate degree.

Regardless of your major - whether it was German or art, psychology or comparative literature - you have had enormous opportunities to learn from, and work with, some of the finest professors in the country. You have listened and argued and thought and written and created, all under the guidance of faculty who are at the forefront of their fields. And although the number of degrees that CLA awards each year is large, you are nevertheless a member of an elite group: graduates who have been educated at one of the world's finest research universities.

A liberal arts education from the University of Minnesota gives you much more than a body of static knowledge whose details will soon fade from memory. You have developed critical skills, creativity, and understanding that will enrich your work, your graduate studies, and the rest of your life. I hope that this education has touched you deeply, and transformed you in important ways. I am confident that, regardless of what comes next in your life, your undergraduate education in CLA will be a foundation for continuing growth. And I hope that as you grow, you will stay connected with CLA.

Congratulations on your achievement. I extend my warmest wishes for continued success throughout your life. ~YQk Steven J. Rosenstone Dean

The University of Minnesota, ranked among the nation's top public universities, reflects the commitment to education of a state that is only 20th in population. It is almost alone among universities in the United States in its combination of three characteristics; an international research university, a land-grant institution with a strong tradition of education and public service, and a metropolitan academic community.

The Twin Cities campus, the University's largest campus, is made up of 19 colleges and offers the full range of academic and professional degrees. A comprehensive campus in Duluth offers undergraduate and graduate programs. The Morris campus offers a four-year liberal arts program. Crookston offers associate and baccalaureate degrees in technical, career-oriented programs. Through the Minnesota Extension Service, the University is present in each of Minnesota's 87 counties.

The University is the primary center in Minnesota (and parts of the surrounding region) for instruction and research in the health sciences, law, engineering, agriculture, and forestry; it offers all of the graduate-level programs in these fields.

When the University was founded as a preparatory school in 1851, Minnesota had been a territory for just two years, and statehood was still seven years away. The school was built on not much more than the pioneers' faith in education. The University struggled financially in its early years and was forced to close during the Civil War. It reopened in 1867.

Two students received bachelor of arts degrees at the first commencement in June 1873. Since then, the University has granted a total of 505,399 degrees. Students earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 250 fields of study. During the 1995-1996 academic year, the University of Minnesota conferred a total of 10,876 degrees on all it campuses.

The Duluth campus joined the University in 1947, the Morris campus opened in 1960, and the Crookston campus in 1966. Enrollment in fall 1996 was 48,690 on all four campuses. Enrollment was 37,018 on the Twin Cities campus, 7,501 at Duluth, 1,970 at Morris, and 2,201 at Crookston.

University alumni include four Nobel Prize winners, a former chief justice of the United States, two former vice presidents, the heads of Fortune 500 companies, pioneers in medicine, civil rights leaders, top journalists, and men and women who have achieved distinction in every field.

Alumni and their families and friends are always welcome at the University. Alumni are invited to continue their relationship with the University through the Minnesota Alumni Association and its college groups. THE COLLEGE OF LffiERAL ARTS

At the heart of every great university is a college encompassing the basic disciplines of knowledge. That college at the University of Minnesota is the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). The college was formally established in 1868, 17 years after the founding of the University.

The traditional branches of knowledge are housed here-the social sciences, the humanities and fine arts, and the natural sciences. In addition, the college offers professional programs with close ties to these fields. Study and research opportunities are available in more than 60 major areas, from the usual, such as English, economics, history, to the less usual, such as women's studies, theoretical statistics, and speech and hearing science. They include disciplines as old as philosophy and as new as computer science. A student may also choose to design an individualized major program.

There were 13,427 undergraduate students and about 1, 778 graduate students enrolled in CLA programs in fall 1996. The college is staffed by nearly 485 permanent faculty members who can share the most current research in their fields.

Many students complete their education in CLA. Others take their basic liberal arts coursework in the college and then transfer to another unit of the University such as the Carlson School of Management or one of the health science schools.

The degree requirements established by the college are designed to provide an education solidly based in the liberal arts. The curriculum introduces students to modes of inquiry and subject matter characteristic of the major branches of knowledge. They also hone students' writing skills and capacities for critical and creative thinking.

A liberal education means not only a breadth of knowledge, but depth and proficiency in a single field of knowledge. Students are required to select a major project, usually a written paper.

The College of Liberal Arts' faculty believes a liberal arts education gives students the analytical skills, creativity, and flexibility needed for life-time learning. SPEAKER AND HONORARY DOCTOR OF SCIENCE ROBERT M. BERDAHL

Robert M. Berdahl has been the President of the University of Texas at Austin since 1993. Earlier this year, he was chosen to become the Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley, where he will begin in July. His academic career began in the liberal arts, with a B.A. degree at Augustana College, and he received an M.A. from the University of Illinois before coming to Minnesota. As a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, Robert Berdahl studied German history with Professor Otto Pflanze. Since his graduation, he has been an associate professor of history at the University of , professor of history and the Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon, and a professor of history and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

As a scholar, Robert Berdahl was the recipient of a Fulbright Research Fellowship in support of his work in Germany, as well as fellowships from the American Philosophical Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has published numerous articles and books on topics involving the political history and social anthropology of Germany over the past two centuries, specializing in issues related to German nationalism. He has worked with agencies that promote the humanities, and often speaks on the value of a liberal arts education.

One of his colleagues who wrote in support of his nomination for the honorary degree described him as "a scholar's scholar, a major academic leader, and a judicious administrator." Dr. Berdahl is a member of the executive committee of the Council of Chief Academic Officers of the National Association of State and Land Grant Universities and Colleges, a member of the Association of American Universities, and former member of the board of directors of the Association of American Colleges.

The honorary degree is the highest award conferred by the University of Minnesota. An honorary degree may be awarded to an individual who has achieved acknowledged eminence in cultural affairs, in public service, or in a field of knowledge and scholarship. OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RICHARD "PINKY" MCNAMARA

Born and raised in Hastings, Minnesota, Richard "Pinky" McNamara came to the University of Minnesota in the 1950's and established his reputation as one of the country's great football players.

Following his graduation in 1956, Mr. McNamara pursued a successful business career with Archer Daniels Midland. Using a small personal nest egg and a bank loan, he purchased a company of his own in 1966, and from that first venture has grown one of the community's most exciting mini conglomerates. Mr. McNamara takes what he calls a "non-MBA" approach to business. His company, Activar, named for the Spanish word for "catalyst," now consists of fourteen companies representing five general categories: construction supply, metal fabrication, and diverse operations as electronics, mortgage services, and auto body repair. He is widely respected as a corporate "tum-around" artist and as such has transformed nearly twenty failing companies into profitable businesses.

Mr. McNamara recently paid tribute to two advisors he credits with "getting him through college:" Dr. Vivian Hewer and Dr. Mabel Powers, advisors in the College of Liberal Arts. The new advising center named in their honor provides state-of-the-art-advising services to students in the college.

Mr. McNamara lends his personal strengths to the community and the state by serving on the Board of Trustees for the University of Minnesota Foundation and by maintaining active memberships in the Minnesota Executives Organization, the Council of Independent Managers, and the University of Minnesota "M' Club. In 1991 Mr. McNamara was honored as one ofMinnesota's Best Entrepreneurs.

This award may be conferred on graduates or former students of the University who have attained unusual distinction in their chosen fields or professions or in a public service, and who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership on a community, state, national, or international level. Candidacy is limited to former students of the University; the candidate's education at the University should represent a significant portion of his or her total postsecondary education. HORACE T. MORSE- MINNESOTA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARDS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR JACQUELYNE N. ZITA WOMEN'S STUDIES DEPARTMENT

Twenty-five years ago, Jacquelyne Zita was among the University's first generation of women's studies faculty. Thrilled at the prospect of creating a new multicultural, interdisciplinary program, Zita says this was the beginning of her "life's work."

Since then, she has become practically synonymous with the field. She has developed many women's studies undergraduate courses, implemented a Ph.D. program, and become a national leader in her field.

What makes her unique, however, is her extraordinary commitment to diversity--ethnic, cultural, social, and intellectual. Trained in both the sciences and the humanities, Zita is an interdisciplinarian of the first order. She is devoted to "rigor and reflection," an attitude that, she says, makes her a "walking, talking, thinking scholar, leaving no page immune to reflection."

And that makes for quite a memorable educational experience, say her students. "She is a rare combination of scientist and philosopher, a brilliant teacher who respects all shades of opinion, " one former student says. In her classes, she balances "scientific-objective facts and narrative accounts, as well as the theoretical background necessary to understand them both," says another.

Beyond her passion for intellectual integration, Zita is tirelessly committed to inclusivity of all kinds. She founded Breaking Silence, a student organization for women of color to share their experiences at a predominately white university. And in what she calls "probably the most significant pedagogical project of my life," she has developed Chicano/Latina Quarter, a course integrating the history, culture, literature, and sociology of U.S. Chicano and Latino women. Many could echo one student's simple testimony: "The classes I took with Professor Zita altered the course of my life."

Each year since 1965, the University of Minnesota has recognized a select group of faculty members for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. The Horace T. Morse-Minnesota Alumni Association Award recognized excellence in contributions to students' learning through teaching, research, and creative activities; advising; academic program development; and educational leadership. The award represents the highest recognition by the University community of its most distinguished scholar-teachers. One of this year's ten awardees is from the College of Liberal Arts. She joins 230 faculty members who have received the award in the past 32 years. The awards are named for the late Horace T. Morse, first dean of the General College (1934-60) and a national leader in the field of undergraduate education. Funded by the Amoco Foundation for 22 years, the awards are administered by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and are now funded by the University of Minnesota Alumni Association (UMAA) and the University. ARTHUR H. "RED" MOTLEY OUTSTANDING TEACHING AWARD PROFESSOR DOUGLAS LEWIS DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

Professor Douglas Lewis is a senior scholar in the Department of Philosophy who has, over the past ten years, worked to integrate perspectives of cultural diversity into his introductory level courses. "Introduction to Philosophy and Cultural Diversity." His influence on campus extends well beyond his own department and he is a valued member of the Martin Luther King Program where he has worked to make non-traditional students successful in his courses and at the University. The letters of support from his undergraduate and graduate students were compelling-Professor Lewis works with all sorts of students, being called by many the department's "adviser of last resort." His effect on students facing many challenges is extraordinary. He has an "unsolicited fan mail file" in the department whose letters reflect how deeply he has touched his students' lives: "There are few people in this world whom I respect enough to allow their influence to directly impact my life. So not only through your patience, wisdom, authenticity, and generosity have you helped to ignite an intellectual flame."

Professor Douglas Lewis earned his undergraduate degree at Amherst College, and an M.A. (1962) and Ph.D. (1964) at the University of Iowa. His teaching and research interests include contemporary metaphysics and epistemology including analysis, phenomenology, existentialism, and feminism. Other interests include early modem philosophy: rationalism and empiricism. Professor Lewis has served as his department's director of undergraduate studies, honors representative, and as a faculty advisor for University College.

Lewis possesses what has been described, as "deliberate and formal manner," but this has been an intensely powerful, dedicated and immensely useful style for his students. Perhaps a colleague best summarized when she said, "These spontaneous letters (found in Lewis's unsolicited fan mail file) briefly gave me the alarming and startling thought that Doug might have charisma." Caring, dedication and serious teaching, much more than simple charisma, are what make Lewis richly deserving of this year's Arthur "Red" Motley Teaching Award.

This unique award honors Arthur H. "Red" Motley, an alumnus and industry leader whose high standards and talents inspired countless others. A generous gift from Red Motley's family to the University of Minnesota Foundation established the endowment fund from which an annual cash award is made to honor an outstanding faculty member; nominated be CLA students and recommended to the dean by a review committee of students, alumni board representatives, and faculty members. LIBERAL ARTS DEGREES

The College of Liberal Arts offers five bachelor's degrees--bachelor of arts (B.A.), bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.), bachelor of science (B.S.), bachelor of individualized studies (B.I.S.), and bachelor of music (B.M.). The bachelor's degrees have many requirements in common. DEGREE CANDIDATES

Academic gowns date back to the 14th century, when they served two functions of nearly equal importance: to indicate the academic rank of the wearer and to keep the scholar warm in the drafty stone halls of academia.

The markings, cut, and color of modern-day academic-costume--cap, gown, and sometimes hood-- indicate the academic degree, the field of study, and the institution that granted the degree.

Master's gowns, black and untrimmed, have pointed sleeves. Doctor's gowns in the United States traditionally have been black with velvet front facings and crossbars on the sleeves, but in recent years a number of universities have adopted gowns of distinctive school colors.

A new University of Minnesota Ph.D. gown and matching tam made their appearance in 1988 to celebrate the centenary of the first Minnesota doctor of philosophy degree. The new Minnesota gown is maroon-trimmed with black velvet chevrons and gold metallic braid. The traditional gown may still be worn.

The Minnesota hood, which may be worn by anyone with a doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota, is black with maroon chevron on gold. Each institution has its own pattern of colors on the hood, worn around the neck and down the back of the gown. The length and shape of the hood identifY the most advanced degree the wearer has earned, and the velvet edging shows the field: blue for doctor of philosophy, light blue for doctor of education, and pink for doctor of musical arts.

At commencement ceremonies those who already have the doctoral degree wear hoods. Degree candidates wear the gowns appropriate for the degrees they are about to receive, and new doctorates are hooded on stage. THE MACE

The University of Minnesota mace was carried for the first time in 1961 by Regent's Professor of Physics Alfred O.C. Nier at the inauguration of President 0. Meredith Wilson. Art professor Philip Morton designed the mace: a crystal sphere four inches in diameter sunnounted by the North Star, symbol of the state of Minnesota, on a solid aluminum handle set with the University regent's seal.
