2014-15 Liberty University Women's Basketball Game No. 11 – Dec. 21 2014‐15 Liberty University Women’s Basketball Game No. 11 – Dec. 21, 2014 Liberty (6‐4) vs. No. 1/1 South Carolina (11‐0) Subway Classic Williams Arena – Minneapolis, Minn. Matchup Notes • Liberty will be facing the nation’s No. 1 team for the first time since March 14, 1998, when No. 1 Tennessee defeated the Lady Flames, 102‐58, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. • The Lady Flames’ most recent matchup with a Top 25 team was a 77‐43 setback to No. 21/21 Purdue in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament (March 24, 2013). Their last win over a Top 25 opponent was an 88‐79 triumph over No. 16/16 DePaul in the second round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament (March 22, 2005). That also marked the highest‐ranked team Liberty has ever defeated. • The only previous meeting between Liberty and South Carolina came on March 16, 2002 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The host Gamecocks held off the Lady Flames, 69‐61, despite 19 points by the Lady Flames’ Stephanie Walker. South Carolina got double‐doubles from Petra Ujhelyi (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Jocelyn Penn (13 points, 14 rebounds). • Sunday’s game will mark the Lady Flames’ first meeting with a SEC opponent since a 70‐55 loss at Texas A&M on Nov. 20, 2012. Liberty’s only SEC win was an 80‐76 victory at Kentucky on Dec. 12, 1998. • South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley played against Liberty during her standout career at Virginia. She had 19 points and five steals during a 102‐61 Cavaliers win in Charlottesville, Va., on Jan. 8, 1989. • Liberty has handed two teams their first losses of the 2014‐15 season. The Lady Flames beat 2‐0 VCU on Nov. 18 and defeated 3‐0 Georgia State on Nov. 30. • Sunday’s matinee will be Liberty’s final non‐conference game of the regular season. The Lady Flames’ final 18 contests will be Big South Conference matchups, beginning Dec. 30 at UNC Asheville. • Liberty has lost back‐to‐back games for the first time in 2014‐15. The Lady Flames will look to avoid their first three‐game losing streak since they opened the 2013‐14 season at 0‐4. • South Carolina is off to an 11‐0 start for the first time in program history and is one win shy of equaling its longest‐ever win streak (12 games), set in 1979‐80 and 2001‐02. A Look Back at Liberty’s 74‐60 Loss to Minnesota • Minnesota broke open a close game with a 12‐0 run to start the second half, pushing a six‐point lead out to 18. Liberty got no closer than 10 the rest of the way and fell, 74‐60, to the Subway Classic host Gophers. • Free throw shooting played a key role in the first‐ever matchup between Minnesota and Liberty. The Gophers got to the foul line 30 times and made 23 of them for 76.7 percent. The Lady Flames only attempted a season‐low eight free throws, including none in the first half. • Minnesota became just the second team to outrebound Liberty this season, finishing with a 50‐36 margin on the boards. • Liberty struggled shooting the ball from the field (32 percent, 24‐of‐75) and three‐point range (24 percent, 6‐of‐25). • The Lady Flames committed a season‐low 12 turnovers and converted Minnesota’s 20 miscues into 24 points. • Liberty finished with a 38‐8 advantage in bench points. • 11 different Lady Flames appeared in the game, and each of them played more than 10 minutes. Individual Notes #1 Mickayla Sanders • Scored a team‐high 15 points (6‐10 FG, 3‐7 3FG) to go along with 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 rebound in 16 minutes played against Minnesota. • It was just her second game of the season after making her 2014‐15 debut at NC State on Wednesday. • Now tied with Laura Rollyson for 20th place in program history with 55 career three‐pointers made, just two games into her sophomore season • Has scored 24 points in 39 minutes this season, while shooting 40 percent (4‐of‐10) from three‐point range #2 Candice Leatherwood • Scoreless (0‐3 FG, 0‐2 3FG) with 1 rebound in 10 minutes played against Minnesota • Tied her career high of 10 minutes played, set on Nov. 18 versus VCU #3 Sadalia Ellis • 4 points (2‐4 FG, 0‐2 3FG) with 4 assists, 3 steals and a rebound in a season‐low 19 minutes played against Minnesota • Has recorded three or more steals in five of her last six games, averaging 3.2 spg during that span #4 Ellee Rollins • Did not play against Minnesota, marking her second straight DNP after she had appeared in each of the season’s first eight games #10 Jaymee Fisher‐Davis • 3 points (1‐8 FG, 1‐7 3FG) in a season‐high 19 minutes played against Minnesota • Has hit a triple in each of her last four games and is now two shy of 50 for her career #12 Audrey Rettstatt • Did not play against Minnesota and has only appeared in three games this season #14 Karly Buer • 10 points (4‐11 FG, 1‐5 3FG, 1‐2 FT) with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in a team‐high 27 minutes against Minnesota • Has now scored in double figures in nine of her first 10 games as a Lady Flame • Has scored a total of 905 collegiate points, including 773 at Missouri State and 132 at Liberty #15 Simone Brown • Season‐low 3 points (1‐3 FG, 1‐2 3FG) with 6 rebounds and 2 assists in 20 minutes played against Minnesota • Snapped a streak of five straight games in double figures, during which she averaged 16.6 ppg • For the second consecutive game, she did not go to the free throw line.
