In his letter, Yeats refers to Aleister Crowley, who was then siding with Mathers against the London members, as ‘a person of unspeakable life’1. When Yeats wrote his letter, Crowley was a young man of 25, and had as yet no public reputation of his own, either good or bad. The exact reason why Yeats (and probably other Second Order members) deemed his life to be so “unspeakable” has never been ascertained, although it had obviously something to do with a perceived immoral behaviour on Crowley’s part. The story might have ended there, with this obscure young man disap- pearing from history again, after having gained, as his only claim to fame, the dubious honour of a dismissive, contemptuous remark from a future Nobel Prize-winning poet.

Crowley’s most famous maxim, from “The Book of the Law” Raised in a very wealthy but strict Christian home, Crowley adored his father and accompanied him on many preaching excursions. But at age 11 his father died suddenly, and his mother instituted a strict regime without toys, books or friends. She employed tutors of the faith, then sent him to a brutal boarding school, where he was abused and raped, ending his happy childhood forever. These heartbreaking experiences undoubtedly influenced his later career in occultism and sexual perversion, which since has spread worldwide through his “disciples.” And though he was raised in and inherited substantial wealth, he soon went through it. Before the First World War began it was gone; he was left scrambling for funds and living upon benefactors throughout his remaining life.     introduction ~ SIX DEGREES of ALESTER CROWLEY ~ IN 2002, THE BBC POLLED its viewers and listeners to compile a list of the Top 100 Britons of all time. Political figures (such as #1, Winston Churchill), literati, and assorted celebrities dominated the list that emerged, to no surprise.1 Coming in at #73, just behind King Henry V and just ahead of Scotland’s Robert the Bruce, was Aleister Crowley. Best known in his day as the “Wickedest Man in the World” or, as he liked to call himself, “The Great Beast 666,” Crowley seems an odd entry for such a list. During his time on Earth, his infamy grew far greater than his fame. Nevertheless, in the nearly sixty years since his death in relative obscurity, Crowley has become a countercultural icon. Even if this falls short of the god-like status he yearned for, it doubtless would gratify him. Aleister Crowley is, few would argue, the father of modern occultism, neopaganism, and New Age spirituality. Today’s Thelemites (avowed followers of Crowley and his spiritual doctrine of Thelema) far outnumber the small cadre he recruited in his lifetime. His motto “Do What Thou Wilt” has had a subtle and profound influence on modern culture. While some still fear and loathe him, Aleister Crowley inspires fascination, even admiration, in others. Crowley’s identification with the occult overshadows his achievements in other spheres. He was a record-setting mountaineer, an outstanding chess player, and a talented or at least popular poet and writer. He also collected an amazingly wide array of friendships and acquaintances, albeit mostly brief, and some regretted.

Present Pasts, 7(1): 2, pp. 1–10, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5334/pp.73 RESEARCH PAPER Lucifer Over Luxor: Archaeology, Egyptology, and Occultism in Kenneth Anger’s Magick Lantern Cycle Ethan Doyle White* One of the great figureheads of American experimental cinema, Kenneth Anger (b.1927), is internationally renowned for his pioneering work, recognisable for its blend of homoerotica, popular and classical music, and dark, symbolist imagery. A follower of Thelema, the religion of infamous British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), Anger’s work is imbued with occult themes and undercurrents rarely comprehen- sible to the non-initiated viewer. In exploring these esoteric ideas, Anger makes use of archaeology and heritage in his short filmsEaux d’Artifice (1953) and Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954–66), as well as in the lost films The Love That Whirls (1949) and Thelema Abbey (1955), which utilize such disparate elements as Aztec human sacrifice and putative Renaissance Satanism. However, this theme only reaches its apex in Lucifer Rising (1980), an exploration of Thelemic theology filmed at such sites as Avebury, Luxor, and Karnak, which reflects and propagates the Thelemic view of the past—an ‘alternative archaeology’ rooted in Crowley’s own fascination with Egyptomania. This paper seeks to explore Anger’s use of the past and place it in its proper context of twentieth-century Western esotericism. Chapter I Being the core of the Equinox Vol. V no. 1 by Motta INTRODUCTION As all those interested in the A\ A\must know, the Order alternates Five Years of Speech with Five Years of Silence. The last published Number of THE EQUINOX was Vol. III, No. vi. Lay bibliophiles must not waste time seeking for Vol. IV, which was a Volume of Silence. Readers must not, under any circumstances, take this present publication of the Commentaries too seriously. The Publication is in Classes A, B and C, which means, "in whiter words": Class A: These are Utterances from above the Abyss, from Initiates of the Collegium Summum, of which must not be changed even the style of a letter. Only the original text of AL and The Comment, signed Ankh-f-n-khonsu, are in this Class here. (Exceptions, such as quotes from other Holy Books, are duly noted.) Such texts are in bold type. (The weak in intellect, the automatic rebel, and even some earnest seeker may ask: "Why must one not change even the style of a letter of such texts?" The answer is simply that even the style of a letter has meaning in them. It is not a matter of Respect for Authority. It is a matter of keeping the records straight, lest the Utterance of a Master become smeared by the Confusion of a Follower, or several Followers, a thing which, unless we mistake, has happened all too often in the past.) Class B: These are utterances of High Initiates of the A\ A\, or of people recognized as High Initiates by the A\ A\, considered of sufficient value to be published under the aegis of the Order.
