SPECIES FACT SHEET Common Name: Hall’s Orthotrichum Scientific Name: Orthotrichum hallii Sull. & Lesq. Recent synonyms: Division: Bryophyta Class: Bryopsida Order: Orthotrichales Family: Orthotrichaceae Taxonomic Note: Substratum information is needed to identify this species. Usually sporophytes are needed to identify species within this genus, but the bistratose leaves make this one easy to distinguish. Technical Description: Plants olive-green to dark green, in 2.5 cm tall tuffs or cushions, stems sometimes branched; leaves lanceolate, acute ± obtuse; lamina bistratose, margins entire, recurved below, bistratose in the upper ½, sometimes with unistratose streaks; costa percurrent, upper medial cells irregularly rounded, 9–14m , with 1–3 small conical papillae per cell; basal cells rectangular to short-rectangular, quadrate on the margins; Autoicous, seta 0.5 – 1.0 mm long , immersed when moist to about ½ emergent when dry, oblong, oblong-ovate, stomata immersed in the middle and lower portion of the urn, strongly 8 ribbed ½ to the full length when dry; peristome double, exostome teeth 8, occasionally spilt to 16, incurved when young, spreading or rarely reflexed when old, never erect. Calyptra oblong, smooth, sparsely hairy, hairs papillose. Spores 10–17m, coarsely papillose. Distinctive characters: (1) bistratose leaves, (2) immersed stomata on an eight ribbed capsule. Similar species: Orthotrichum hallii is distinguished from other species of Orthotrichums by its bistratose leaves and oblong, 8-ribbed emergent sporophyte. About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization. -

Abstract: The generic name Dorcadion Adans. ex Lindb. is a superfluous and illegitimate name for Orthotrichum Hedw. The new generic name Dorcadionella Plášek, Sawicki & Ochyra is proposed for a segregate of Orthotrichum which comprises species with superficial stomata that are always monoicous and only occasionally produce gemmae on leaves. Dorcadionella affinis (Schrad. ex Brid.) Plášek, Sawicki & Ochyra is selected as a type of this new generic name. The genus Dorcadionella consists of 63 species and one variety that have a worldwide distribution. Traditionally, they were all placed in Orthotrichum and the relevant transfers to the new genus are effected in the present account. Since its inception (Hedwig 1801) over 250 species have been given names under this generic name, of which about 150 species are still accepted in modern bryology (Lewinsky 1993; Crosby et al. 2000). Because species of this genus exhibit great diversity of morphological traits, Orthotrichum was subdivided into no fewer than seven subgenera and five sections (Vitt 1971; Lewinsky 1993). Abstract: The traditionally conceived genera Orthotrichum Hedw. and Ulota F.Weber are here reclassified into six genera, Orthotrichum, Dorcadion Lindb., Nyholmiella Holmen & E.Warncke, Pulvigera Plášek, Sawicki & Ochyra, Plenogemma Plášek, Sawicki & Ochyra, and Ulota, based on morphological differences and partially on molecular evidence. The genus Pulvigera includes P. lyellii (Hook. & Taylor) Plášek, Sawicki & Ochyra (Orthotrichum lyellii Hook. & Taylor) which was selected as its generitype. The genus Plenogemma includes P. phyllantha (Brid.) Plášek, Sawicki & Ochyra (Ulota phyllantha Brid.) which was selected as its generitype. Key words: Orthotrichum; Dorcadion; Nyholmiella; Plenogemma gen. nov.; Pulvigera gen. nov.; Ulota; moss taxonomy Introduction Orthotrichum Hedw. is a cosmopolitan moss genus consisting of 159 species (Sawicki, Plášek & Szczecińska 2012) and it is the second largest genus in the family Orthotrichaceae. Taxonomic subdivision within this genus has been the subject of continued debate since the late 19th century. Certain taxa were repeatedly included in or removed from the genus Orthotrichum in an attempt to better clarify infrageneric taxa, including subgenera and sections. The history of taxonomic classification of the genus Orthotrichum has been described in detail by Lewinsky (1993) and Lewinsky-Haapasaari and Hedenäs (1998). Spore Morphology of Some Orthotrichaceae Arn. Species (Bryophyta) from Turkey

SPECIES (BRYOPHYTA) FROM TURKEY FILIZ SAVAROGLU* Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Art, Eskisehir Osmangazi University, 26480, Meselik, Eskisehir, Turkey Key words: Bryophyta, Orthotrichaceae, Spore morphology, Turkey Abstract The spores of Orthotrichum lyellii Hook & Taylor, O. speciosum Nees, O. affine Schrad. ex Brid., O. rupestre Schleich. ex Schwagr., O. anomalum Hedw. and O. cupulatum Hoffm. ex Brid. showed the apertural region consists of a leptoma in their spores. Two spore types are characterized by their surface ornamentation, reflecting the species’ taxonomic relationships. The spore shape of all the species is spheroid. The spore size ranged from 7 to 23 µm in the genus Orthotrichum. While the surface ornamentation is verrucate in O. speciosum and O. affine, it is gemmate in O. lyellii, O. rupestre, O. anomalum and O. cupulatum. The spore walls of the family Orthotrichaceae include sclerine (the distinction between exine and perine might be difficult to define) and intine. The examined moss species belong to two habitat types: corticolous and saxicolous. The taxonomic and ecological implications of the genus Orthotrichum were discussed on the basis of its spore morphology. Introduction The Orthotrichaceae Arn. family is mainly distributed in Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa. Species of Orthotrichaceae are tufted plants that grow on the trunks, branches and twigs of shrubs and trees, under sheltered or humid conditions, and on rocks and walls. The genus Orthotrichum Hedw. consists mainly of corticolous, epiphytic or saxicolous species of the Orthotrichaceae (Smith 2004). In the genus Orthotrichum, the spore size has been used for diagnostic purposes, but little is known about the potential value of spore ornamentation. -

A recent proposal has been made to accommodate the monoicous species with such stomata in the genus Dorcadion Adans. ex Lindb., which is, however, an illegitimate name according to the current Code of nomenclature of algae, fungi and plants. Consequently a new name is required, and the generic name Lewinskya F.Lara, Garilleti & Goffinet is proposed. New combinations are made for all the species included in the new genus. Given the long history of the genus Orthotrichum and the similarities between this genus and Lewinskya, the morphological and geographic circumscriptions of both genera are provided to define them accurately. The taxa remaining in Orthotrichum s.str. are also listed. Biogeography / Diversity / Musci / Nomenclature / Systematics INTRODUCTION Acrocarpic mosses growing on trees or rocks, with orthotropic stems, leaves with short isodiametric cells above, elongate basal cells, undifferentiated marginal cells, a mitrate calyptra and with sporangia, which upon dehiscence reveal a diplolepideous (though often variously reduced) peristome, are accommodated in the genus Orthotrichum Hedw. -

Both Syed (1973) and Holyoak (2004) studied a specimen labelled as a type of Bryum moravicum by Podpeˇra that is housed in the Stockholm herbarium (S). However, in the original description Podpeˇra (1906) stated that his newly described species grew ‘in several places’, so that it might be inferred that several type specimens existed in his herbarium. Such additional type material might show greater variability than the specimen in S or perhaps even belong to other taxa within the Bryum capillare complex. The present paper describes the additional type material of Bryum moravicum and designates a lectotype. -
