Ideal for anyone who leads or would like to lead a small group – e.g. home group, Bible study, Alpha, enquirers’ course, nurture course. It will cover how adults learn, group dynamics and the skills of facilitating groups. Dates: Saturday 17th and 24th September, 9.30am – 1.00pm Venue: St Augustine’s, Luton Cost: Free Booking: Please book online if possible - http://www.stalbans.anglican.org/ministry/find-a-course/, or contact Kathryn at the Parish Development Office (see above) 1 LAY LEADERS OF WORSHIP This diocesan scheme is designed to help make it possible for public worship to take place in every church every Sunday and to promote Fresh Expressions. Training for LLWs includes six introductory sessions over two Saturdays. For more details and application forms see the diocesan website: http://www.stalbans.anglican.org/ministry/lay-leaders-worship/ Dates: Saturdays 1st October and 19th November, 9.30am – 4.00pm Venue: St Andrew’s, Biggleswade Cost: Free Booking: Application forms from applicant and incumbent essential – see http://www.stalbans.anglican.org/ministry/lay-leaders-worship/ MISSION ACTION PLANNING – TRAINING MORNINGS As we renew our commitment to Living God’s Love, we are also refreshing our commitment to using Mission Action Plans (MAPs) as a tool to help focus our activities. These workshops will help parishes think about their MAP as an opportunity for mission. They will offer guidance and tips for those new to doing a MAP, but will also support those seeking to renew their MAP or who perhaps want some fresh ideas – or who weren’t involved the first time round or would like to do it differently this time round! To get the most from the morning, we encourage parishes to send two or three people – perhaps the priest and one or two from the PCC or MAP group. There will be more opportunities in the New Year, but these dates are available now: Dates and venues: Wednesday 23rd November, 9.30am – 1.00pm, St Andrew’s, Biggleswade Saturday 26th November, 9.30am – 1.00pm Christ Church, Ware Cost: Free Booking: Essential. Please book online if possible - http://www.stalbans.anglican.org/ministry/find-a- course/, or contact Kathryn at the Parish Development Office (see above) GIVING MATTERS – One session on ‘time, talents and treasure’ A new resource to help parishes think about giving – perhaps to support a stewardship initiative or as people think of joining the Parish Giving Scheme. It covers our time, talents and treasure, with a focus on treasure, and looks at why we give, what we can give, how we decide what to give, the different ways of giving financially and how much we might give. It is a single 2-hour session (including coffee) which can be used in any parish, benefice or deanery setting. It’s for everyone – not just the PCC, or the ‘stewardship team’. It can be delivered locally – perhaps by a member of the clergy or a Reader or a member of the PCC who is familiar with the principles of Christian giving. It can also be used for Home Groups/Bible Study groups – perhaps over one or two sessions – where the usual leader of the group could facilitate the discussions and take more time for the group to look at and discuss the Bible verses as you work through the material. We can email a copy of it to you if you’d like to see it in advance. Please contact the Parish Development Office. CHILDREN’S WORK Talking Messy Church Have you started down the Messy road, or thinking of beginning the journey? • The Origins of Ickleford
The origins of Ickleford Figure 1: Ickleford in the twenty-first century; pale lilac areas were once in Holwell (in Bedfordshire before 1894) and pale blue in Shillington (Bedfordshire); green areas are Archaeological Areas previously used in planning (© Ordnance Survey) Introduction The village of Ickleford lies to the north of Hitchin and sits astride the Icknield Way. The historic parish – formerly part of Pirton – consisted of two separate lobes, joined by a narrow section of Lower Green between Snailswell (previously in Holwell) and the River Hiz (Figure 2). The manor of 1 Ickleford occupied the southern lobe, while the northern was the manor of Ramerick. The ‘tongue’ of Holwell that projected east from the Bedford Road around Snailswell and the detached part around Cadwell were transferred to Ickleford in the later twentieth century; both parts lay in Bedfordshire before 1894. The southern and eastern boundaries of the parish followed the Rivers Oughton and Hiz respectively. Since the incorporation of Cadwell into Ickleford, this remains true only north of Lower Green Farm and south of the Icknield Way. The northern boundary follows an unnamed stream, branches of which rise in Holwell and Stondon. To the west, the Bedford Road (A600) forms its northern line, while it follows hedges, field baulks and minor roads in a zig-zag to the River Oughton. Ickleford became a vicarage in 1215, with two chapels: one lay in Ickleford, the other at Ramerick. Each chapel served a separate manor, both of which were subinfeudations of Pirton, each held for a quarter of a knight’s fee from that manor.

  • North Hertfordshire Open Space Review & Standards 2016
North Hertfordshire Open Space Review & Standards 2016 PART 1: OPEN SPACE REVIEW 1 1. Introduction 1.1 Access to high quality open spaces and opportunities for sport and recreation can make an important contribution to the health and well-being of communities; and if well designed and maintained they can make areas attractive places to live, work and visit. 1.2 Planning Policy Guidance Note 17 (PPG17): Planning for Open Space, Sport and Recreation (2002) aimed to improve the quantity and quality of open space, by requiring local authorities to undertake an assessment of needs and opportunities in their area, and to develop a series of local standards by which to improve the overall provision of open space. 1.3 In 2009 an assessment was carried out to assess the provision of open space, sport and recreation facilities in North Hertfordshire, based on PPG17 and its Companion Guide (Assessing Needs and Opportunities). This North Hertfordshire Green Space Standards document examined the existing provision based on different types of open space and set out open space standards, differentiating between urban and rural developments. 1.4 The purpose of this 2016 report is to review open space provision in the District since the open space assessment undertaken in 2009. In doing so, it will provide an updated position on the latest provision of open space, sport and recreation facilities in North Hertfordshire. This work is being done in line with the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) (2012) and Planning Practice Guidance (PPG) (2014), which have replaced PPG17 and its Companion Guide. 1.5 This 2016 update will ensure that the Local Plan is supported by an up-to-date assessment and will form part of the evidence base.

  • Notes and Memoranda on Some Hertfordshire Churches at the Beginning of This Century. Mr
29 Notes and Memoranda on some Hertfordshire Churches at the beginning of this Century. BY H. R. WILTON HALL. Mr. Cussans twenty years ago wrote:— "At Essendon Place is preserved a large collection of local sketches, the value of which it would be difficult to over estimate. They were made about the year 1797, by a schoolmaster of Tewin, named Pridmore, and are bound in nine thick volumes. The collection consists of coloured views of nearly all the Gentlemen's Seats in the 30 S. ALBAXS AND HEliTs ARCHITECTURAL AXD ARCHvKOLOGlC AL SOCIETY County; all the Churches, and principal monuments within them, together with objects of antiquarian interest, such as old stained glass, windows, rood screens, fonts, etc. One volume is devoted to the Coats of Arms of Hertfordshire families. These volumes bear witness to the fearful destruction of ancient monuments which has taken place during the last eighty years. Modern restorers have as much to answer for as the popularly abused soldiers of Cromwell, destroyers as they were. It seems incredible that scores of Churches in this County, which now possess as much Archaeological interest as the waiting-room of a railway station, should less than a century ago have been rich in brasses, stained glass, and exquisite carvings in wood and stone : yet such is the case."* In the year 1884, Baron Dimsdale allowed the Rev. Dr. Griffith to have copies taken from the collection, relating to his Parish of Sandridge. It was my good fortune to try my hand at making these copies for Dr. Griffith, and I thus had an opportunity of examining this Collection of Views to which Mr.
