On Tuesday, city administration presented a draft budget to council which includes the cut for property taxes among other spending plans for 2020. “We’ve got some decisions to make on some projects and we’ll have that deliberation as we go through over the next month to finalize the budget,” said Mayor Marshall Chalmers. Chestermere cuts local utility rates by eight per cent (Calgary Herald, July 2019) While Calgary battles to lesson its tax burden, particularly on businesses, Chestermere has cut its utility rates by eight per cent just a month after slashing taxes for residents by two per cent. The city east of Calgary announced the reduction at a council meeting on Tuesday. The rate changes will affect utilities such as water, sewage and stormwater management. It will take effect Aug. 1. “These decisions are part of council’s work to be responsive to residents, to make Chestermere a more affordable and sustainable place to call home, and create an amazing community for both residents and businesses,” said Chestermere Mayor Marshall Chalmers.
