EXHIBITION GUIDE & EVENT HIGHLIGHTS STAGING MAGIC A warm welcome to Senate House Library and to Staging Magic: The Story Behind the Illusion, an adventure through the history of conjuring and magic as entertainment, a centuries-long fascination that still excites and inspires today. The exhibition displays items on the history of magic from Senate House Library’s collection. The library houses and cares for more than 2 million books, 50 named special collections and over 1,800 archives. It’s one of the UK’s largest academic libraries focused on the arts, humanities and social sciences and holds a wealth of primary source material from the medieval period to the modern age. I hope that you are inspired by the exhibition and accompanying events, as we explore magic’s spell on society from illustrious performances in the top theatres, and street and parlour tricks that have sparked the imagination of society. Dr Nick Barratt Director, Senate House Library INTRODUCTION The exhibition features over 60 stories which focus on magic in the form of sleight-of-hand (legerdemain) and stage illusions, from 16th century court jugglers to the great masters of the golden age of magic in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These stories are told through the books, manuscripts and ephemera of the Harry Price Library of Magical Literature. Through five interconnected themes, the exhibition explores how magic has remained a mainstay of popular culture in the western world, how its secrets have been kept and revealed, and how magicians have innovated to continue to surprise and enchant their audiences. -

I certify that all the material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has been previously submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ……………………………………………………………………………………… 1 Abstract The late nineteenth century and early twentieth century were an important period for popular shows involving the moving and projected image, yet there have been few sustained studies that have mapped optical entertainments systematically outside London or that have analysed the influence of such shows on early film exhibition. This thesis has profiled the popular and visual culture of five contrasting South West locations during this period, tracing the development and distribution of magic lantern shows and dioramas as well as identifying the local and touring companies who hosted film on its arrival in the region. Using the local press, the trade press, contemporary publications and ephemera, this thesis has reconstructed an account of local shows and culture which not only deepens our understanding of popular visual entertainments in regional contexts, but which also serves to stand as a comparison to other established urban and metropolitan paradigms and thus to contribute to a wider and more complex national picture. -

Suburbia, seaside and sensation: showing films in London and the south-east, 1896 – 1897 Amy Louise Bethel PhD University of York Theatre, Film and Television September 2015 Abstract The study of film exhibition has become increasingly important in researching and interpreting the silent film period. In this context, it is crucial to understand how the British film-going experience emerged, laying the foundations for one of the key leisure pursuits of the twentieth century and beyond. This thesis examines a fascinating and distinct moment in the history of silent film. The resilience of films as an occasional form of entertainment during the first two years of commercial exhibition was due, in part, to the sensational aspects of the new medium, and to the activities of a range of travelling showmen and lanternists. The role of such individuals in suburban areas has been largely overlooked, while the role of the music hall and the frequency of film shows in this period have been overstated. I seek to redress this by showing that films arrived outside of large urban areas in a variety of settings, with lanternists occupying a crucial role. By employing an empirical and systematic methodological framework, I offer a new perspective by means of detailed case studies chronicling the exhibition of films in the suburban towns of Croydon, Ealing and Woolwich between 1896 and 1897. Focussing so precisely on the first two years of commercial exhibition enables a comprehensive study of the initial impact of the cinematograph and how film exhibition was working in that period. By means of a fourth case study, I re-appraise and re-position the role of lanternists and show the importance of these entrepreneurs in terms of film exhibition and their impact on the suburban London landscape. -

Cornering the Market on Fraud Stage Magicians versus Spirit Mediums JOHN BENEDICT BUESCHER George Mason University It is well known that the first public demonstrations of physical manifesta- tions of spiritualist phenomena were rapidly followed by demonstrations pur- porting to debunk them: The Fox sisters produced spirit raps at Corinthian Hall in Rochester in November 1849.1 The following year, the one-time Universalist minister Chauncey Burr put on debunking shows, in which he made cracking sounds with his toe joints.2 What is less often observed is the competitive nature of the magicians and mediums: in the latter half of the nineteenth century and beyond, the two were in fact in an ongoing competi- tion for the same corner of the entertainment market; they sought not only to engage the same clientele, but also to pointedly maneuver around the legal and social impediments to the practice of their art. The English magician John Nevil Maskelyne wrote in 1876 that, ‘‘Medium and conjuror means the same thing,’’ but ‘‘a bad conjuror will make a good medium any day. The spirit juggler,’’ he said, ‘‘shall keep you singing hymns for two hours in a darkened room (his own room, too!) and then pronounce the circumstances unfavourable. [But the magician] must produce the effects whether the audience be ‘sympathetic’ ...ornot.’’3 1. BRITISH PHILATELIC BULLETIN Magic Royal Mail s next special stamp issue Technical details Five stamps celebrating the centenary of the Magic Circle go on sale at Post Office branches and philatelic outlets and Royal Mail Tallents House Printer Walsall on 15 March. The Circle was founded by John Nevil Maskelyne (1839- Process Gravure 1917), regarded as the father of modern British conjuring. The stamps fea Stamp size 41 x 30mm ture: 1st Spinning coin - heads or tails; 4-Op a rabbit out of hat trick; 47P Sheet size 25 and 50 knotted scarf trick; 68p card trick; and £1.12 pyramid under fez trick. The Perforation 14.5 x 14 stamps were designed by Tatham Design using illustrations by George Phosphor Two bands Hardie. In keeping with the subject, the stamps feature magic tricks which Gum PVA can be enjoyed by the collector or user of the stamps.
