The group chose to create RCRC University – Diverse Change Through Community Outreach as its project, which was the idea JULY CALENDAR 7 proposed by Kami King. The program took place on Friday, May 30, 2014 at MISSION STATEMENT St. Andrews Park. The event was a one-day mini conference designed to create Dedicated to enriching lives and an educational program specifically to help agency staffers in professional connecting communities through development around issues pertinent to parks and recreation. ATTITUDES AND SOCIAL COGNITION Why Susie Sells Seashells by the Seashore: Implicit Egotism and Major Life Decisions Brett W. Pelham, Matthew C. Mirenberg, and John T. Jones State University of New York at Buffalo Because most people possess positive associations about themselves, most people prefer things that are connected to the self (e.g., the letters in one’s name). The authors refer to such preferences as implicit egotism. Ten studies assessed the role of implicit egotism in 2 major life decisions: where people choose to live and what people choose to do for a living. Studies 1–5 showed that people are disproportionately likely to live in places whose names resemble their own first or last names (e.g., people named Louis are disproportionately likely to live in St. Louis). Study 6 extended this finding to birthday number preferences. People were disproportionately likely to live in cities whose names began with their birthday numbers (e.g., Two Harbors, MN). Studies 7–10 suggested that people disproportionately choose careers whose labels resemble their names (e.g., people named Dennis or Denise are overrepresented among dentists). Implicit egotism appears to influence major life decisions. This idea stands in sharp contrast to many models of rational choice and attests to the importance of understanding implicit beliefs. Reichard Kravis Leadership Institute, Claremont McKenna College, Claremont, California, USA Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe a framework for conceptualizing the role of emotional and social skills in effective leadership and management and provides preliminary suggestions for research and for the development of leader emotional and social skills. Design/methodology/approach – The paper generalizes a dyadic communications framework in order to describe the process of emotional and social exchanges between leaders and their followers. Findings – The paper shows how emotional skills and complementary social skills are essential for effective leadership through a literature review and discussion of ongoing research and a research agenda. Practical implications – Suggestions for the measurement and development of emotional and social skills for leaders and managers are offered. Originality/value – The work provides a framework for emotional and social skills in order to illustrate their role in leadership and their relationship to emotional and social intelligences. It outlines a research agenda and advances thinking of the role of developable emotional and social skills for managers. Anna Plummer M.D. Medical Ethics and Humanities 2020 Thesis Committee: Dr. Julie Aultman (Advisor) Dr. Rachel Bracken Brian Harrell Copyright Anna Plummer 2020 ABSTRACT Mental illness has been a subject of fictional film since the early 20th century and continues to be a popular trope in mainstream movies. Portrayals of affected individuals in movies tend to be inaccurate and largely stigmatizing, negatively influencing public perception of mental illness. Recent research suggests that gender stereotypes and mental illness intersect, such that some mental illnesses are perceived as “masculine” and others as “feminine.” This notion may further stigmatize such disorders in individuals, as well as falsely inflate observed gender disparities in certain mental illnesses. Since gendered mental illness is a newly identified concept, little research has been performed exploring the way stereotypical gendered mental illness is depicted in mainstream film. This paper analyzes the movie What About Bob? to show that comedic film perpetuates stigma surrounding feminine mental illness in men and identifies the need for further study of gendered mental illness in movies to ascertain the effect such depictions have on the observed gender disparities in prevalence of certain mental disorders, as well as offers a proposal for coursework for film and medical students. i ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This paper would not have been possible without Dr. Aultman, whose teaching inspired me to pursue further education in Medical Ethics and Humanities, and whose guidance has been invaluable not only for this project, but also for addressing ethical issues in the clinic. -

Thus, this paper focuses on the role of family relations, especially parent-child attachment, as determining factor in the development of antisocial behaviour among adolescents. Previous studies have shown that secure attachment is generally related to positive behavioural and social outcomes, while insecure attachment (ambivalent or avoidant) are often related to negative outcomes. Insecure attachment which is associated with parental negativity and rejection predicts externalizing behaviour such as aggression and disruptiveness; and internalizing behaviours; such as depression, anxiety, and social withdrawal. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Subtypes, Dimensions, Levels, and Mental States in Narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder Kenneth N. Levy Pennsylvania State University Various conceptualizations of subtypes, levels, and dimensions of narcissism and narcissistic person- ality disorder (NPD) are considered with a particular focus on overt grandiose presentations and covert vulnerable presentations. Evidence supporting this distinction and clinical vignettes to illustrate it are presented as well as their implications for clinical work with NPD patients. The research and clinical evidence points to the conclusion that these broad categorical subtypes are better conceptualized as dimensions on which individual patients vary on relative levels, thus suggesting that grandiose and vul- nerable presentations represent two sides of the same coin. Keywords: narcissism; narcissistic personality disorder; grandiose subtype; vulnerable subtype Beginning with its inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM; 1968, 1980, 1994, 2000), narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) has been conceptualized predominately by its overt grandiose features. However, the definition of NPD articulated in the DSM-III and its successors, DSM-III-R and DSM-IV, has been criticized for failing to fully capture the intended clinical phenomena (Cooper & Ronningstam, 1992; Gabbard, 1989; Gunderson et al., 1991). These authors have noted that the DSM criteria have focused narrowly on aspects of the conceptual approaches of Kernberg and Millon, emphasizing the more overt form of narcissism. However, theoretical and empirical work is now converging to suggest that NPD is not a homogenous disorder and subtypes likely exist within this group. -

Inaddition to narcissism, internalizing symptoms, externalizing behaviors, and risky behaviors were evaluated, as such issues have been associated with both maltreatment (Baer & Maschi, 2003) and narcissism (Barry & Malkin, 2010; Bushman & Baumeister, 1998). -

Cults of personality, preference falsification, and the dictator's dilemma Charles Crabtreex, Holger L. Kerny, and David A. Siegelz Abstract: We provide a novel rational explanation for why cults of personality exist: they solve the dictator's adverse selection problem in assigning subordinates to roles within the regime. Participation in a cult of personality is psychologically costly whenever it involves preference falsification, with the costs varying across individuals. Importantly, low psychological costs of preference falsification are correlated with traits the dictator values, such as unscrupulousness and ruthlessness, which we collectively term disposition-based competence. Under a wide variety of circumstances, this correlation makes participation in cults of personality informative from the dictator's point of view, allowing him to hire loyal and competent subordinates for the most important regime positions. In contrast to earlier formal work, our model implies that dictators can use cults of personality to avoid the loyalty-competence trade-off when promoting subordinates. FOSTER University of Georgia, USA ABSTRACT The present research addresses whether narcissists are more overconfident than others and whether this overconfidence leads to deficits in decision making. In Study 1, nar- cissism predicted overconfidence. This was attributable to narcissists’ greater confi- dence despite no greater accuracy. In Study 2, participants were offered fair bets on their answers. Narcissists lost significantly more points in this betting task than non- narcissists, due both to their greater overconfidence and greater willingness to bet. Finally, in Study 3, narcissists’ predictions of future performance were based on per- formance expectations rather than actual performance. This research extends the litera- ture on betting on knowledge to the important personality dimension of narcissism. Gigerenzer and Hoffrage (1995), among many others, have pointed out that average decision strategies can be misleading, as they may reflect decision strategies that no single decision-maker employs. It is often better to explore the decisions that individuals reach. Furthermore, reliable differences in which kinds of people make which kind of decisions are important. Stanovich and West (2000), for example, have defended the reality of various cognitive illusions by demonstrating that people who violate conventionally defined norms tend to be those who perform less well in other domains. Looking at the same base of data, Funder (2000) argued that the observed correlation constitutes standard validation of the test items, and that the ability of some people to solve the problems correctly indicates an absence of systematic irrationality. -

After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams, plays and the circumstances of his imprisonment, followed by his early death. Wilde's parents were successful Dublin intellectuals. Their son became fluent in French and German early in life. At university Wilde read Greats; he proved himself to be an outstanding classicist, first at Dublin, then at Oxford. He became known for his involvement in the rising philosophy of aestheticism, led by two of his tutors, Walter Pater and John Ruskin. He also profoundly explored Roman Catholicism, to which he would later convert on his deathbed. After university, Wilde moved to London into fashionable cultural and social circles. As a spokesman for aestheticism, he tried his hand at various literary activities: he published a book of poems, lectured in the United States of America and Canada on the new "English Renaissance in Art", and then returned to London where he worked prolifically as a journalist.
