Canals, DMin Date completed: December 2011 Problem There are many members in the Hillsboro Seventh-day Adventist Church who do not attend the weekly worship service on a regular basis. More than half of the members on the books are inactive. For the last 5 years, attendance at the Hillsboro Church has declined. The present study determined the impact of a visitation program on church attendance. In the program attending church members visited inactive members. Method Theological considerations on the importance of the involvement of church members in visitation led to the development of a visitation program. This program was implemented at the Hillsboro Church and evaluated for effectiveness in increasing attendance. Results Over 20 members of the Hillsboro Church were trained, equipped, and coached to do the work of visitation. Church attendance grew by 5% from the previous year to a level that was 3.1% higher than the average attendance for the previous 10 years. Two inactive members began attending church again. Members who no longer wanted to be on the church books were identified. And a culture of church attendance was started. Conclusions The work of ministry is not for pastors only. The responsibility to reach out to inactive members in the local church falls on the active church members themselves. When these members are properly trained, equipped, and coached, they will be part of searching for those who are no longer attending church. These local church leaders are eager and willing to do the work of God if given the opportunity. Moreover, these leaders should make specific plans to reach the growing numbers of inactive members. In his Gospel St. Luke tells us that St. Joseph, the legal father of Jesus and husband of Mary, was a descendent of King David. This is why when the Roman Emperor, Caesar Augustus, ordered a census be done and that everyone be registered in the birthplace of their ancestors, Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem, and it was there that the Savior was born. Our second reading is from the Epistle to the Hebrews, words that are understood to be placed on the lips of Jesus: “Sacrifices and offerings you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me” – a body fashioned by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary.

The book is only 140 pages long and well worth the $11. Recommended by Mary Pat Ferraro. The Gift of an Ordinary Day: a Mother's Memoir by Katherine Kenison. The author of Mitten Strings for God writes beautifully about her family and her quest for living a simpler, more genuine life.

    BASIC CHRISTIANITY Lecture Number 24 THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY [http://www.stvincentscathedral.org/page/basic_christianity_course_document_files ] Rev. 9/1/15 TRADITION “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” [I Corinthians 12:27] That is us that St. Paul is talking about. We are his Body. We are his flesh and blood. We are his brethren. He has a Mother also. And since we are his Body, his flesh and blood, his Mother is our Mother! “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only son from the Father.” [John 1:14] The Incarnation of the Son of God is the entire life of Jesus and everything involved with it. So the fact which we celebrate when we proclaim the Gospel is that God Himself has taken flesh from a particular woman in a particular place at a particular time. The Son of God not only took on human nature, he also took on a human family with kinfolks and family traditions, and, even more, he took his genetic makeup from his human Mother. Families have memories, family traditions. My own family has a fascinating tradition. It is the story of my grandmother’s great grandmother, Rebecca Denton Porch. She was born in 1747 and died in 1863. She lived 116 years! She was approaching middle age when the American Revolution was won. She lived through the War of 1812 and died during the Civil War. When she was over a hundred she still hitched up her own buggy and drove it.
