Officers for 2002 April/May 2019 Thinking of all our New Zealand communities this month and in Australia, of which our community theatres both here and across the Tasman, are such a huge part of, as we remember our ANZACS who served in World War One and those who have served in further conflicts since the “great war” – we will remember them. 1 President’s Opening Address – 59h National Volunteer Training/Conference – 2019 Ladies and Gentlemen, Thespians and Committee members, Crew and Musicians, Life Members, and Sponsors - welcome to the 59th Annual General Meeting and Training Weekend here in the Big Smoke of Auckland, hosted by the wonderful team from Auckland Music Theatre. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Daniel Pepperell and I am the President of Musical Theatre NZ, a Steamers (and Chiefs) fan, and I hail from the mighty city of Tauranga. As I reflect over my first year as President, I can tell you it was incredibly busy, and absolutely rewarding. MTNZ have made great inroads with Creative NZ, already gaining funding for a plan around financial sustainability, and also received funding from them for the ever-expanding Next Gen Boot Camp. Kate and I also represented Musical Theatre in NZ at the Beehive for the opening of NZ Theatre Month. And even still with these extra engagements and an extra board member, our lovely Past President Lesley, we were able to keep Executive costs to the same level as previous years, congratulations must go to our forever fiscally minded General Manager, Kate. This year also feels like a changing of the guard for our organisation. We have some people who have dedicated large parts of their lives to MTNZ, stepping aside and allowing a new generation to emerge. Markham Lee, our Honorary Solicitor and Life Member, whose work over the past 10 years has probably touched each and every society across the country. Many of you might not know that a lot of correspondence you receive from us will flow past Markham’s desk. I want to thank him for his many years of service. And our Board Members, Ross Benbow, who for 19 years has served our Zone 4 Region, Lesley Carthew, Zone 3 Rep, Vice President, President, (and my support person) totalling 10 years, and Kate Ghent, our General Manager for the past 19 years. I had always said I pity the president who is in control when Kate leaves, lucky me. However, I am still supported by my amazing Vice President, Past Presidents, Life Members and my Executive who together have amazing years of experience. These changes also allow a new generation of fresh faced and energetic people to serve this wonderful cause. I would like us all to raise a toast for those people who have selflessly served this organisation in the pursuit of promoting and making musical theatre in this country as popular as can be. So enjoy tonight and this weekend, learn as much as you can, meet and network with all the fellow lovers of Musical Theatre and have an absolutely amazing time. 2 3 4 59th AGM and Volunteer Training Weekend – Auckland - IT’S A WRAP Thank you to all those who attended or were part of the MTNZ Annual Conference in Auckland. What a fantastic weekend of fun, frivolity, networking, learning and of course, some serious moments. Congrats to all those societies who were successful in the competitions. Our congratulations to all the Patron’s, Community Tech and Merit Award Recipients this year. Special congratulations to our Lesley Carthew and Ross Benbow on their life memberships. MTNZ sincerely congratulates Louise, Andrew and their wonderful team from Auckland on a great weekend and all the volunteer hours that go into these events, from pretty much a year out. HUGE hours – so thank you all so much. Special thanks to the techie crew – David, Glen, Arran and Aaron , Aiden, Sam, Molloy who were fantastic wing possums – couldn’t do it without you so thank you all. And Daniel Pierre Pengally – love your work Awesome MC. We would also like to sincerely thank our corporate members who sponsored parts of conference – without them we could not keep the rego fee at the level it is and our wonderful seminar and forum panellists and presenters – thank you all so much for sharing your knowledge and craft with us. Please remember to support our corporate members when you are looking at sound, lighting, theatre design, ticketing etc. It was really good to see so many new faces at conference and great to see so many young people there as well. Our wonderful seminar speakers and forum panellists – AMAZING – thank you – and no one gets paid to do those either, so we are very lucky. Feedback is always very welcome and very important– whilst we have rules that require an AGM etc. the weekend is about the membership, so if you want to send some thoughts or ideas especially seminar and forum ones or perhaps you would like to present a seminar or be on a forum panel, just send [email protected] an email or email your zone rep. The Exec are meeting in June, where we they will discuss any feedback and the planning for Napier will be sorted. But we do hope to see many of you before then Start your fundraising now and it would be fantastic to see “EVERY SOCIETY IN THE MTNZ MEMBERSHIP” represented. Let that be the challenge ☺ Spread the word. Further down in Spotlight is our calendar – it would be great to see you along to zone meetings. As you can appreciate, it is so hard during AGM weekend for the Exec to talk to people etc. because we are all running about like mad things, meetings at zone levels are great because we have more time and are not in “organisation” mode and can catch up in a less formal environment which is what it is all about. Cheers everyone and see you next year in Napier if not before. Thanks for supporting MTNZ and coming to conference and make sure you bring a new person or two next year ☺ – Kate for the MTNZ Executive Click here for the conference photo collection with huge thanks to Lyndon Katene from LK Creative 5 A big thanks from MTNZ to the following individuals and companies, for their assistance with the planning for the 59th Musical Theatre NZ National Conference Diamond Partners and Major Sponsors of Musical Theatre New Zealand John Herber Limited & NZ Fire Shield Limited Major sponsors of MTNZ, sponsors of the the showbill competition; A Night at the Races gala dinner pens, pads and bags Platinum Partners of Musical Theatre New Zealand iTICKET – Friday night dinner and Saturday night “best dressed” awards, lanyards; programme award, seminar presenter Holly and showbill judges Origin Theatrical Sydney - poster competition, AGM morning tea and The Origin Theatrical Champagne and Canape Hour BOUNCE NZ - sound design and sponsored supply Amici Productions - Kerri Tilby Price seminar and forum; Sunday workshop presenters Gold Partners of Musical Theatre New Zealand Music Theatre International (Australasia) AGM lunch, Nola Speir NextGen Youth Encouragement Award Creative Ambiance Stage Technologies Ltd - lighting design and sponsored supply ACLX – AV design and sponsored supply Silver Partners of Musical Theatre New Zealand OneMusic – seminar presenter costs ETNZ (Entertainment Technology NZ) – Community Technical Awards Amici Trust ML Consultants 4th Wall Theatre Services – conference technical and stage management Bronze Partners of Musical Theatre New Zealand David Spicer Productions Kenderdine Electrical Andrew Malmo Ruske Performing Arts Theatre Company The Auckland Music Theatre Team Conference Coordinators Louise Monson and Andrew Potvin Team: Susan Patterson, Richard Neame, Melissa Carroll, Scott Thomas, Rowena Monson, Jim Monson, Nick Brown, Jono Sadler, Trish McLennan, Sherrin Scelly, Julie Tretchikoff, John Fausett, Louise Parker, Watchman Rivers, Lynette Leggett, Barb & Garry Hieatt, Grant Meese, Terry O’Connor with thanks to NZ Opera for the loan of their vans for airport transport 6 Awards for 2019 MTNZ Life Membership – Ross Benbow and Lesley Carthew Merit Awards - Lyndsay Browne, Ruth Cranwell, Dianne Favel, Richard Neame, Jenni Murphy-Scanlon, Marie von Keisenberg, Dan Blackmore, Neila Blackmore, Brian Brodie, Marjorie Bowdler, Gail Fox, Mark Howell, Avril Keep, Craig Maxwell, Robert Ormsby, Andrew Ritchie, Stephanie Wheeler, Ron Braithwaite, Judy Braithwaite MTI Australasia Nola Speir Patrons Youth Encouragement Award – Toni Garson - Musikmakers The ETNZ Community Theatre Technical Achievement Award 2019 - Brian Kenny - AMDRAM Whanganui The ETNZ Community Theatre Technical Achievement - Youth Award 2019 - Isaac Steel - Musical Theatre Oamaru The John Herber/NZ Fireshield Showbill Competition 2019 Third Variety Theatre Ashburton – Mamma Mia Second Rotorua Musical Theatre – Rock of Ages First Manukau Performing Arts – Be More Chill ACT Multi A Programme Award 2019 Third Blenheim Musical Theatre - Mary Poppins Second Showbiz Christchurch - Wicked First Hamilton Operatic Society - Sister Act New Plymouth Operatic Multi B Programme Award 2019 Third Napier Operatic Society - Beauty and the Beast Second South Canterbury Drama League - Beauty and the Beast First Tauranga Musical Theatre - Mary Poppins The iTICKET Multi C Programme Award 2019 Third Rotorua Musical Theatre - Rock of Ages Second Variety Theatre Ashburton – Mamma Mia!
