And, so far - I have.Sometimes the stories are somewhat weak - but the characters never are. Montalbano and his team, his lifelong fiance Livia, the trattoria he always frequents, the endless mullet dishes he enjoys, his veranda on the beach - below which a churning sea often eats up most of said beach - his postprandial walks by the pier, his rock, his beloved Saracen olive tree (for as long as it awaits him) where he can lie in its branches, so still than ants and little spiders walk across him freely, his fear of growing old (is it because hes Sicilian/Italian that he views late 40s/early 50s - in the earlier books - as old??) - all this, and the beauty and bleakness that is Sicily as well as Camilleris always humorous asides of the politics and corruption that seems endemic to Sicily - all contribute to the ceaseless pleasure these books give me. Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction.

My favorite character is Agatino Catarella, who is renowned for mixing up any phrase. Montalbano's passion to solve this old crime takes him, heedless of personal danger, on a journey through the island's past and into a family's dark heart amid the horrors of World War II. This is not included in the audio version. He was born on September 6, 1925 in the small fishing village of Porto Empedocle, on the southern coast of Sicily near Agrigento. Little is known about Camilleri’s early years, however, he began university in 1944 but soon dropped out and moved to Rome to be a part of its experimental theatrical community. All of the works discussed are detective novels set the south-western part of Sicily. The authors chosen for analysis use a traditional, formulaic and popular template of the detective story, or some variation thereof, and their novels all contain the figure of the detective as a protagonist and organizing narrative device. The contemporary Sicilian detective novel, as demonstrated by the works of the three selected writers, reveal the importance of place. This thesis compares and contrasts the manner in which the Sicilian locale or setting is depicted, related to, constructed, invented and contextualized by each author. The idea of Sicily as a simulacrum is also discussed. As each author recreates his settings in novel form, these simulacra go on to form connections with, overlap or negate other literary spaces, not all of them located in Sicily or even Italy. The places of the novels are examined with reference to real cities, towns and communities. Furthermore, the emphasis is on how these fictional representations are created or fit into relationships with other texts and genres.

He was 68 when he published the first of a series of mystery novels featuring Salvo Montalbano, the commissario (chief of detectives) in Vigàta, a fictional town in western Sicily. But, beginning with La forma dell'acqua (The Shape of Water) in 1994, the novels became bestsellers in Italy and then internationally. Stephen Sartarelli, Camilleri's English-language translator, renders them from the author's Sicilian-inflected Italian into an idiom that often reads like Italian-American Brooklynese yet preserves the author's lean style and ironic voice and wit. (To date, 26 of the novels have been published in English.) The books have a fervent following not only among Italian and Anglophone readers; they have been translated into some 30 languages.
