My Own 221B Baker Street ”To a Great Mind Nothing Is Little” (STUD)
My Own 221B Baker Street ”To a great mind nothing is little” (STUD) PLANNING AND BUILDING For forty years I had toyed with the idea of making myself a full-scale replica of the most famous room in the world literature, the legendary snug , unconventional sitting room at 221B Baker Street in London where most of the wonderful Sherlock Holmes adventures begin and where the reader, embedded in safe fellowship, listens to the detective revealing his remarkable clues to his dedicated friend Dr Watson while the eternal smoke from his pipe curles against the ceiling. However, on my own retirement we moved to a rather small terrace house and I had to drop the idea. I then suddenly remembered a fine letter from my friend John Bennett Shaw 1 where he temptingly describes the 221B miniature that his wife Dorothy had made for him, and realized that I could build my own scale model. Now, twelve years later, I can hardly think of anything more pleasant than a hobby including cultural and literary research, miniature handicraft and collecting. After having read the Holmes stories once again -- this time taking careful notes -- I started with a design draft. My proper scale would be the English 1:12, one inch to one foot. And my model should at least exibit the ground floor and the second floor of the famous three-storied Baker Street house. When musing about the dimensions of the house I decided on two criteria: The stairs leading up to the second floor must consist of seventeen steps2 and the sitting room had to be large enough to hold all the furniture that is mentioned in the stories3. -

Art Spiegelman's Experiments in Pornography
ORE Open Research Exeter TITLE Art Spiegelman’s ‘Little Signs of Passion’ and the Emergence of Hard-Core Pornographic Feature Film AUTHORS Williams, PG JOURNAL Textual Practice DEPOSITED IN ORE 20 August 2018 This version available at http://hdl.handle.net/10871/33778 COPYRIGHT AND REUSE Open Research Exeter makes this work available in accordance with publisher policies. A NOTE ON VERSIONS The version presented here may differ from the published version. If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication Art Spiegelman’s ‘Little Signs of Passion’ and the emergence of hard-core pornographic feature film Paul Williams In 1973 Bob Schneider and the underground comix1 creator Art Spiegelman compiled Whole Grains: A Book of Quotations. One of the aphorisms included in their book came from D. H. Lawrence: ‘What is pornography to one man is the laughter of genius to another’.2 Taking a cue from this I will explore how Spiegelman’s comic ‘Little Signs of Passion’ (1974) turned sexually explicit subject matter into an exuberant narratological experiment. This three-page text begins by juxtaposing romance comics against hard-core pornography,3 the former appearing predictable and artificial, the latter raw and shocking, but this initial contrast breaks down; rebutting the defenders of pornography who argued that it represented a welcome liberation from repressive sexual morality, ‘Little Signs of Passion’ reveals how hard-core filmmakers turned fellatio and the so-called money shot (a close-up of visible penile ejaculation) into standardised narrative conventions yielding lucrative returns at the box office. -

The Shaw One Hundred
The Basic Holmesian Library A Catalog by Timothy J. Johnson In conjunction with an exhibit based on John Bennett Shaw's list of One Hundred and a conference sponsored by The Norwegian Explorers of Minnesota Elmer L. Andersen Library Special Collections & Rare Books University of Minnesota Libraries June — July 2001 Minneapolis 2001 Introduction to the Exhibit “Some years ago I staged an exhibition of what I then considered to be the One Hundred Basic Books, pamphlets and periodicals relating to Sherlock Holmes.” So wrote John Bennett Shaw in a short introduction to his first official compilation of these books, pamphlets and periodicals, which he titled “The Basic Holmesian Library”. His goal was to give “an in-depth view of the entire Holmesian culture,” and while he admitted the difficulty encountered in choosing what to include out of so many fine writings, he approached this daunting task with the enthusiasm of one who truly understood the meaning of Collecting Sherlockiana. His own library, which he defined in his essay “Collecting Sherlockiana” as “…a number of books and other printed material on one subject, or on several,” focused on Sherlock Holmes. An avid bibliophile, he narrowed his collecting to this one subject after donating his other collections to such universities as Notre Dame, Tulsa, and the University of New Mexico. It is perhaps ironic to use the term narrowed for such a collection, which grew to over 15, 000 items. As his own library expanded with acquisitions of previously printed as well as newly published items, he revised his list of the Basic Holmesian Library. -

The most famous of them were the post-spring 1968 Pilote, Charlie Mensuel (debut issue in February 1969), L’Écho des savanes (May 1972), Métal Hurlant (January 1975), and Fluide glacial (May 1975). 02 There appeared simultaneously a handful of more or less short-lived titles— including Zinc (1971-1974), Le Canard sauvage (1973-1974), Mormoil (1974-1975)— whose quick or not-so-quick demises stemmed from insufficiently attractive contents and/or faulty distribution.
