WCU – Joytotheworld A NOTE FROM WCU PRESIDENT PHYLLIS CRAMER Merry Christmas! Maestro Brusubardis has compiled a repertoire of traditional and familiar songs of the season to inspire you and lift your spirits. These pieces have worldwide appeal as they have been passed down through the generations and sung throughout the world. As much as we enjoy harmonizing as a group, it gives us even greater pleasure to share our voices with you. Your participation, as an audience, brings the wondrous experience full circle. We invite you to join us [even on stage] again on March 29 when we present Handel’s Messiah in memory and tribute to Fred and Joanne Portz, former members and community philanthropists. In May, we are looking forward to presenting familiar choruses from stage and screen. You won’t want to miss it! And… if you wish to sing with us, auditions will be held in the third week of January. WCU was featured in WISN-TV’s Season to Celebrate broadcast during Christmas of 2011. Originally a combination of Carroll College students and community singers, WCU took its present form as an auditioned choir in 1978. Recent collaborative partners include the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Bel Canto Chorus, Milwaukee Choristers, Carroll University Choirs, and the choirs of Waukesha South High School, Muskego High School, and Hartford Union High School. MISSION The Waukesha Choral Union will challenge, enrich, and engage its singing members, audiences, and community through the pursuit of excellence and a variety of programming. The WCU mission includes expansion of the effectiveness of its educational efforts throughout Waukesha County through collaboration. His other choral directorships include the advanced ensembles of Hartford Union High School and the Brusubardis-Dzimente Latvian Choir, a podium he shares with his father. His expertise in this latter pursuit has earned him the chief conductorship of Latvian Song Festivals in the United States, Canada, and Latvia. This week it is Joy to the World. I’m not a musician, but they tell me Christmas music is very hard. If you’re a musician and you agree with that statement, would you raise your hand. I figured it out today after I saw Matt doing all those rounds over there on all of the instruments. Will you help me thank them for how hard they’ve worked putting all this together. November and December have been unbelievable months and they want me to tell you to lower your expectations for January, but we say NO! Right? Today, we’re talking about Joy to the World. We’re talking about joy. What a great day, what a great season to talk about Joy. There’s lots to celebrate at Christmas. The first thing that comes to mind is the day after Thanksgiving and is the joy of shopping. We all enjoy shopping and getting ready for Christmas. The stress with the crowds. Is anybody going to Silver Dollar City today? There are some crowds I just need to prepare you for. A couple of years ago we were there on Christmas and I heard some of the best theme parks statements I’ve ever heard in my life. On the way in where that big wreath is, and people stop to take pictures, there are ladies that ask, “Would you like your picture taken?” This time, one of the ladies asked a dad of a group of like 15 people, “Can I get you picture?” I kid you not, word for word, that dad said, “I don’t even want to be here with them right now.

    Festival Holy Eucharist Christmas Eve 2008 Washington National Cathedral ONIGHT WE CELEBRATE A MIRACLE. Like the angel, who heralded gladT tidings to the shepherds, we meet this holy night to sing the joy of Jesus’ birth. Eternity enters time with a child in Bethlehem. Yet this birth is not as we might expect, not a magisterial or glorious arrival but a simple and vulnerable coming. A tiny baby, swaddled in rags, makes God’s glory known to us. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us…full of grace and truth.” Christmas is a celebration of the fact that, out of love, God took our human form with all its frailties.     The Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ festival holy eucharist Dear friends, Merry Christmas! We’re so glad you’ve joined us here for a Cathedral Christmas. Please know that the doors of this Cathedral are always open to you, and that everyone has a home here in this house of prayer for all people. During this busy time of year, I sometimes wonder what draws people to church, especially for those who rarely or never go to church for the rest of the year. There are so many demands on our time, and the places we go or the people we visit say something about what’s important. So why do churches tug on our heartstrings at this time of year? The Christmas story, at its core, is about that moment in time when God chose to dwell among us. In the church, we call it the Incarnation. Christmas is about that moment when God came closest to us, when the veil between heaven and earth slipped away and we could see and touch the very face of God. I think churches are the same way, or at least we try to be. In this glorious Cathedral, where the majestic space draws our eyes toward Heaven, we get a glimpse of that moment when God comes close. If you pause for a moment, you can feel the same sense of the incarnate God, Emmanuel, God with us. This is a place where God feels close. Maybe that’s why you’re here, in this Cathedral, this Christmas. However you got here or whatever drew you here, thank you for letting us share that experience with you, and for joining us to encounter God anew at Christmas.

The Hebrew root for “joy” that is used 54 times in the Hebrew scriptures–ranan (pronounced raw-nan’)–means “to ​ ​ shout, to cry out” and to “overcome.” Our shouting for joy trains the lungs and the courage to shout aloud for the overcoming of injustice.     46TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT CONCERT PEACE ON EARTH Over 2,000 years ago, a baby was born in a manger. In the Christian tradition, this baby was God incarnate, the Savior of the World. Viewed as one of the most peaceful events in history, it likely wasn’t peaceful at all! Can you imagine a birth in a stable alongside livestock? However, the birth of Jesus Christ would eventually result in the ultimate peace on Earth as he came to save the world from hatred, violence, division and death. Two millennia later, the holiday season doesn’t look that peaceful. We all anticipated gathering with friends and family, celebrating the holidays and reminiscing about the things we are grateful for. Unfortunately, in the middle of a global pandemic, these gatherings might not happen this year. Now the new normal is riddled with uncertainty and fear. Even though this year doesn’t look normal and may not feel peaceful, we should remember the birth of Jesus, which ultimately brought a peace that remains with us even amid our chaos. As the angels promised, “On Earth peace, goodwill toward all people” following the hectic birth of our Savior.
