  • Halestorm Rocks the Palladium
    Halestorm Rocks The Palladium Halestorm recently came through New England and played the Worcester Palladium on Nov 29. The show was nothing short of amazing. Frontwoman Lzzy Hale was on fire with her incredible vocal range as well as her ability to lay down awesome guitar riffs with the forefathers of hard rock. Opening the set was their hard and heavy track, “Mz Hyde” off of their last studio album The Strange Case Of…. The crowd was eating it up from the moment Lzzy stepped out onto the stage. The night was full of their signature tracks, old and new, and with a few surprises thrown in the mix. Known for their ability to do any songs they’ve covered justice, there were a couple curveballs in the night’s lineup of songs. First, was the classic Judas Priest song “Dissident Aggressor.” Being a huge Halestorm fan, this took me by surprise. A very pleasant surprise. To see this band rock such a killer song from one of the godfathers of heavy metal, and have Lzzy do Rob Halford such justice, was just something you had to see to believe. The other cover choice toward the end of their set was the Fleetwood Mac hit “Gold Dust Woman.” Stevie Nicks is a big influence for Lzzy’s more mellow vocals, and I can only assume that Stevie herself would be incredibly proud. The cover was absolutely flawless. I think this is how Halestorm appeals to such a wide range of age groups. They have their own classic hard rock sound, but are tweaked to appeal to younger generations.

In 1971 Johnny Thunders formed the New York Dolls, a band of transvestites, and John Cale (of the Velvet Underground's fame) recorded Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers, while Alice Cooper went on stage with his "horror shock" show. In London, Malcom McLaren opened a boutique that became a center for the non-conformist youth. The following year, 1972, was the year of David Bowie's glam-rock, but, more importantly, Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell formed the Neon Boys, while Big Star coined power-pop. Finally, unbeknownst to the masses, in august 1974 a new band debuted at the CBGB's in New York: the Ramones. The future was brewing, no matter how flat and bland the present looked.     THE BIGGEST SHOW ON EARTH: The U2 360- Degree Tour and its implications on the Concert Industry An Undergraduate Honors Thesis by Daniel Dicker Senior V449 Professor Monika Herzig April 2011 Abstract The rock band U2 is currently touring stadiums and arenas across the globe in what is, by all accounts, the most ambitious and expensive concert tour and stage design in the history of the live music business. U2’s 360-Degree Tour, produced and marketed by Live Nation Entertainment, is projected to become the top-grossing tour of all time when it concludes in July of 2011. This is due to a number of different factors that this thesis will examine: the stature of the band, the stature of the ticket-seller and concert-producer, the ambitious and attendance- boosting design of the stage, the relatively-low ticket price when compared with the ticket prices of other tours and the scope of the concert's production, and the resiliency of ticket sales despite a poor economy. After investigating these aspects of the tour, this thesis will determine that this concert endeavor will become a new model for arena level touring and analyze the factors for success. Introduction The concert industry handbook is being rewritten by U2 - a band that has released blockbuster albums and embarked on sell-out concert tours for over three decades - and the largest concert promotion company in the world, Live Nation. This thesis is an examination of how these and other forces have aligned to produce and execute the most impressive concert production and single-most successful concert tour in history.
