FACT SHEET June 2007 ATLANTIS (STS-117) SpaceShuttleAtlantis'upcomingmission,designatedSTS117,willincreasetheInternational SpaceStation'spowercapabilityandpreparethestationforthearrivalofnewmodulesfrom theEuropeanandJapanesespaceagencies.Theshuttlealsowilldeliveranewcrewmember andbringanotheronebackafterasixmonthmission.Usinglessonsfromthelasttwoshuttle flights,theAtlantiscrewwillworkcloselywiththestationcrewandgroundteamsatNASA's JohnsonSpaceCenter,,tocompletethemissionobjectives.Theshuttleisdelivering anewsegmenttothestarboardsideofthestation'sbackbone,knownasthetruss.Three spacewalksareplannedtoinstalltheS3/S4trusssegment,deployasetofsolararraysand preparethemforoperation.Twodaysandonespacewalkmaybeaddedtothe11daymission iftherearedifficultieswhenanothersolararrayisfoldedbackintoitsbox. TheSTS117crewpatchdepictsthestationwiththeS3/S4sectionsandanewset ofsolararrays.Thetwogoldofficesymbols,emanatingfromthe“117," representtheshuttleandstationprograms'effortstocompletethestation.The shuttleandbannerofred,whiteandbluerepresentournation'srenewedpatriot ismasNASAcontinuestoexploretheuniverse. FACTS & FIGURES • STS117isthe118thspaceshuttleflight,the21stflighttothestation,the28thflightforAtlantisand thefirstoffourflightsplannedfor2007.TheSTS117launchisthe65thfromPad39A.Theprevious launchfromthatpadwasSpaceShuttleColumbiaonJan.16,2003. • Eachsolararrayisabout115feetlong.Thetotalwingspanismorethan240feet.Afterthismis sion,thearrayswillprovideatotalpowercapabilityofabout60kilowatts,equivalenttothepower usedby40typicalU.S.homesatanygivenmoment.(Press Kit, p. 45) • DuringtheSTS117mission,animprovementtotheshuttle'smainenginesystemwillbeactively operatingononeofthespacecraft'sthreeengines.TheAdvancedHealthManagementSystem,or AHMS,canshutdownanengineifvibrationanomaliesaredetected.TheAHMSwasinmonitoronly modeononeengineduringtheSTS116missioninDecember2006andwillbeinthesamemode forAtlantis'twootherengines.
