This is where the research significance of the archaeology is explored and revealed, giving its meaning within a theoretical and social context. The main research questions that the archaeological evidence allows us to address are:1 1. Pre-European environment (Chapter 12) Evidence pertaining to the topography, geomorphology, vegetation etc. of this site prior to colonisation may contribute to research in the environmental history of the Sydney region, Aboriginal land management practices, historical ecology etc. 2. Remaking the landscape (Chapter 13) The Conservatorium site is located within one of the most significant historic and symbolic landscapes created by European settlers in Australia. The area is located between the sites of the original and replacement Government Houses, on a prominent ridge. While the utility of this ridge was first exploited by a group of windmills, utilitarian purposes soon became secondary to the Macquaries’ grandiose vision for Sydney and the Governor’s Domain in particular. The later creations of the Botanic Gardens, The Garden Palace and the Conservatorium itself, re-used, re-interpreted and created new vistas, paths and plantings to reflect the growing urban and economic importance of Sydney within the context of the British empire. -

Attachment A Report Prepared by External Planning Consultant 3 Recommendation It is resolved that consent be granted to Development Application D/2017/1652, subject to the following: (A) the variation sought to Clause 6.19 Overshadowing of certain public places in accordance with Clause 4.6 'Exceptions to development standards' of the Sydney Local Environmental Plan 2012 be supported in this instance; and (B) the requirement under Clause 6.21 of the Sydney Local Environmental Plan 2012 requiring a competitive design process be waived in this instance; and (C) the requirement under Clause 7.20 of the Sydney Local Environmental Plan 2012 requiring the preparation of a development control plan be waived in this instance; Reasons for Recommendation The reasons for the recommendation are as follows: (A) The proposal, subject to recommended conditions, is consistent with the objectives of the planning controls for the site and is compatible with the character of the area into which it will be inserted. It will provide a new unique element in the public domain which has been specifically designed to highlight Sydney’s main boulevard and the important civic precinct of Town Hall and the Queen Victoria Building. (B) The proposed artwork is permissible on the subject land and complies with all relevant planning controls with the exception of overshadowing of Sydney Town Hall steps. While the proposal will result in some additional shadowing of the steps this impact will be minor and is outweighed by the positive impacts of the proposal. (C) The proposal is of a nature compatible with the overall function of the locality as a civic precinct in the heart of the Sydney CBD. -

MEDWAY 25A Norman Street, New Plymouth, New Zealand [email protected] Abstract The population of Providence petrels (Pterodroma solandri) that nested on Norfolk Island at the time of 1st European settlement of that island in 1788 was probably > 1 million pairs. Available evidence indicates that Europeans harvested many more Providence petrels in the years immediately after settlement than previously believed. About 1,000,000 Providence petrels, adults and young, were harvested in the 4 breeding seasons from 1790 to 1793 alone. Despite these enormous losses, many Providence petrels were apparently still nesting on Norfolk Island in 1795 when they are last mentioned in documents from the island. However, any breeding population that may have survived there until 1814 when Norfolk Island was abandoned temporarily was probably exterminated by the combined activities of introduced cats and pigs which had become very numerous by the time the island was re-occupied in 1825. Attachment B Modern Movement Architecture in Central Sydney Heritage Study Review Modern Movement Architecture in Central Sydney Heritage Study Review Prepared for City of Sydney Issue C x January 2018 Project number 13 0581 Modern Movement in Central Sydney x Heritage Study Review EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This study was undertaken to provide a contextual framework to improve understanding post World War II and Modern Movement architecture and places in Central Sydney, which is a significant and integral component of its architectural heritage. Findings x The study period (1945-1975) was an exciting and challenging era that determined much of the present physical form of Central Sydney and resulted in outstanding architectural and civic accomplishments. x There were an unprecedented number of development projects undertaken during the study period, which resulted in fundamental changes to the physical fabric and character of Central Sydney. x The buildings are an historical record of the changing role of Australia in an international context and Sydney’s new-found role as a major world financial centre. Surviving buildings provide crucial evidence of the economic and social circumstances of the study period. x Surviving buildings record the adaptation of the Modern Movement to local conditions, distinguishing them from Modern Movement buildings in other parts of the world. x The overwhelming preponderance of office buildings, which distinguishes Central Sydney from all other parts of NSW, is offset by the presence of other building typologies such as churches, community buildings and cultural institutions. These often demonstrate architectural accomplishment. x The triumph of humane and rational urban planning can be seen in the creation of pedestrian- friendly areas and civic spaces of great accomplishment such as Australia Square, Martin Place and Sydney Square. -

12 Chapter 13: Remaking the Landscape 13.0 Remaking the landscape 13.1 Research Question The Conservatorium site is located within one of the most significant historic and symbolic landscapes created by European settlers in Australia. The area is located between the sites of the original and replacement Government Houses, on a prominent ridge. While the utility of this ridge was first exploited by a group of windmills, utilitarian purposes soon became secondary to the Macquaries’ grandiose vision for Sydney and the Governor’s Domain in particular. The later creations of the Botanic Gardens, The Garden Palace and the Conservatorium itself, re-used, re-interpreted and created new vistas, paths and planting to reflect the growing urban and economic importance of Sydney within the context of the British empire. Modifications to this site, its topography and vegetation, can therefore be interpreted within the theme of landscape as an expression of the ideology of colonialism. It is considered that this site is uniquely placed to address this research theme which would act as a meaningful interpretive framework for archaeological evidence relating to environmental and landscape features.1 In response to this research question evidence will be presented on how the Government Domain was transformed by the various occupants of First Government House, and the later Government House, during the first years of the colony. The intention behind the gathering and analysis of this evidence is to place the Stables building and the archaeological evidence from all phases of the landscape within a conceptual framework so that we can begin to unravel the meaning behind these major alterations. -
HMS Sirius Shipwreck Factsheet
Decemeber 2011 THE HMS SIRIUS The shipwreck of the HMS Sirius is one our most significant links to a vessel of the First Fleet. Located in Commonwealth waters, south east of Kingston Pier in Slaughter Bay, Norfolk Island, the archaeological remains of the HMS Sirius are the only known in-situ remains of a vessel of the First Fleet. Badu Gili, a daily celebration of First Nations culture and history, is launched, projecting the work of fve eminent First Nations artists from across Australia and the Torres Strait on to the Bennelong sail. Launch of fourth Reconciliation Action Plan and third Environmental Sustainability Plan. The Vehicle Access and Pedestrian Safety 2016 project, the biggest construction project undertaken since the Opera House opened, is completed; the new underground loading dock enables the Forecourt to become largely vehicle-free.
