MYSTy WHICH GAVE ME A CHANCE TO vel characters, and each story launches you into a GET BACK INTO THeFIGl-IT, separate and complete QUESTPROBE computer game. So, without further ado, let's get straight to this story's adventure . .. WHAT IS AN ADVENTURE? If you have never played an adventure game before then you are in for a real treat. Adventuring permits the player to move at will within the game environment, and to examine objects for clues that wil[ help reach the objective of the game. · For example, an adventure might start thus: l'M IN A ROOM. VISIBLE OBJECTS ARE A RUBY-ENCRUSTED BOX AND A CLOSED DOOR. TELL ME WHAT TO DO. You may want to start by entering a direction (North, South, up, down etc.) to see if you can leave the room. Chances are, though, that you will have to find a way to get through the door. So, let's try something simple. You type: OPEN THE DOOR But the computer answers in no uncertain terms : SORR Y, IT'S LOCKED. WHAT SHALL I DO? Since the ruby encrusted box appears to be the only other object in the room, let's take a closer look. You type: TAKE THE RUBY-ENCRUSTED BOX SOME USEFUL NEW FEATURES There are several new features which have been introduced in Spider Man to help you interact more easily with your computer. However, the computer responds with: 1) Stringing together of more than one command using 'Then' or a SORRY, I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND comma (,).e.g. GET THE BOX, OPEN THE BOX THEN TAKE THE KEY Don't despair, Pilgrim. The nature of adventuring is such that the computer will generally not understand adjectives, so we must simplify 2) The use of full full sentences,e.g. our command. Try again, and type: GO ALL THE WAY UP: TAKE THE GEM FROM THE AQUARIUM. TAKE THE BOX TALK TO MADAME WEB. 3) The ability to take or drop more than one object at a time,e.g. This time the computer says: TAKE EVERYTHING DROP THE GEMS O.K. DROP ALL By saying O.K. the computer is telling you that it has u.nderstood your command and the box has now been taken. To check th1s _you can type: SOME HELPFUL WORDS Although, the vocabulary accepted by your computer is extensive, you INVENTORY may find the words listed below to be of some use as you set about your adventure. Remember these are just a few of the many words available. The computer now responds with: CLIMB MOVE TALK TAKE PUSH DROP EXAMINE I AM CARRYING: A RUBY-ENCRUSTED BOX GO ENTER READ LEAVE QUIT SAVE LOOK OPEN TURN PULL RAISE DIG LISTEN JUMP Now let's take a look inside: Finally,- the computer can understand much more than you may think, so experiment. OPEN THE BOX O.K. ONE LETTER COMMANDS EXAMINE THE BOX You may use the following single keys to perform a variety of tasks and to expedite playing time. Type the letter for the function you want then O.K. THERE IS A KEY AND A RARE POSTAGE STAMP. hit return. • The Birth of Sandman
The Birth of Sandman Christoph Ammann Doug Bloom∗ Jonathan M. Cohen John Courte Lucio Flores Sho Hasegawa Nikos Kalaitzidis Terrance Tornberg Laurence Treweek Bob Winter Chris Yang Sony Pictures Imageworks 1 Introduction The Birth of Sandman sequence in Spider-Man 3 involved creating a human-sized character who emerges from a pile of sand in full view under a well-lit environment. The scale of the shot ranges from macro close up views of single sand grains to distant views of the entire sand pile as Sandman emerges. The sequence begins with a fully CG 2,672-frame shot that slowly revolves around sand- man as he forms. The Imageworks Sand FX team had an enormous challenge of transferring character animation into a physically plau- sible animation of hundreds of millions of sand grains forming into a human form. To accomplish this task, we built a variety of simulation engines and Figure 2: Sandman's hand collapses. We used everything from a Houdini DOPs simulation of sand grains settling for the extreme close-ups, to a surface-based 1b). During this erosion process, we simulated collision with solid relaxation algorithm derived from [Onoue and Nishita 2003], to a parts of Sandman's body. This heightfield-based system was highly grain-grain simulator similar to [Bell et al. 2005]. Our rendering efficient, able to process the entire 2,672-frame shot in under 30 system was based on RenderMan and included a continuous level- minutes.

  • Avengers Dissemble! Transmedia Superhero Franchises and Cultic Management
Taylor 1 Avengers dissemble! Transmedia superhero franchises and cultic management Aaron Taylor, University of Lethbridge Abstract Through a case study of The Avengers (2012) and other recently adapted Marvel Entertainment properties, it will be demonstrated that the reimagined, rebooted and serialized intermedial text is fundamentally fan oriented: a deliberately structured and marketed invitation to certain niche audiences to engage in comparative activities. That is, its preferred spectators are often those opinionated and outspoken fan cultures whose familiarity with the texts is addressed and whose influence within a more dispersed film- going community is acknowledged, courted and potentially colonized. These superhero franchises – neither remakes nor adaptations in the familiar sense – are also paradigmatic byproducts of an adaptive management system that is possible through the appropriation of the economics of continuity and the co-option of online cultic networking. In short, blockbuster intermediality is not only indicative of the economics of post-literary adaptation, but it also exemplifies a corporate strategy that aims for the strategic co- option of potentially unruly niche audiences. Keywords Marvel Comics superheroes post-cinematic adaptations Taylor 2 fandom transmedia cult cinema It is possible to identify a number of recent corporate trends that represent a paradigmatic shift in Hollywood’s attitudes towards and manufacturing of big budget adaptations. These contemporary blockbusters exemplify the new industrial logic of transmedia franchises – serially produced films with a shared diegetic universe that can extend within and beyond the cinematic medium into correlated media texts. Consequently, the narrative comprehension of single entries within such franchises requires an increasing degree of media literacy or at least a residual awareness of the intended interrelations between correlated media products.
