Clements fonds ca. 1880s-1953 Access: Open. Graphic, Textual 0.57 meters Title: J.H. Clements fonds Dates of Creation: ca. 1880s-1953 Physical Description: 56 cm of photographs and 7 textual records Biographical Sketch: James Henry Clements (“Harry”) was born in 1874 in Ontario. Clements married Mary Margaret on August 4, 1897 in Edmonton, with whom he had two sons (Harry Jackson and William). The couple settled in Ashcroft around 1896, where Clements owned and operated a drugstore. This enterprise was successful, and in 1898 he took up a position with Clarke’s in Kamloops. The Clements would move to Kamloops in 1903, but would continue running the Ashcroft store until its sale in 1908 to Huston. In 1910 Clements built a new drugstore on Victoria Street and 3rd Avenue in downtown Kamloops, which he operated until his retirement in 1952. During his time in Kamloops, Clements was involved in the Commodore Motor Boat Club (owning a boat named the “Clementine”), the school board (Trustee in 1927), the Kamloops Lawn Bowling Club (President in 1932), and the Property Owners’ Association (President 1937). The Clements also travelled widely throughout North America to visit their extended family members. After Margaret’s death in 1945 Clements remarried a woman named Agnes, and would retire to Vancouver in 1952. James Henry Clements died on August 12, 1963 in Vancouver, at the age of 89. Scope and Content: Fonds consists primarily of photograph albums comprised of photographs taken or collected by J.H. Clements. Photographs document life in Kamloops and the Clements’ travel. Fonds also contains a small number of programmes for social events. 2 KAMLOOPS MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES 2018.026, etc. J.H. Clements fonds ca. 1880s-1953 Access: Open. This accession may have been donated at the same time as accession 1989.024, due to identifying stamps on the items. Accession 1989.024 was donated in 1989 by Hecla Casey (per Pinchbeck), and may contain materials related to the Pinchbeck family as no full documentation for this collection exists. Accession 2018.026 was donated on February 23, 2018 by David MacKenzie, who obtained the albums from his parents who were the managers of the apartment building where the Clements spent their final years in Vancouver. Accession 2018.136 was donated on April 1, 1998 by Dorothy Kopecky, the granddaughter of J.H. and Margaret Clements. Accession 2019.002 was donated by J.H. Clements at an unknown time, and was accessioned in 2019. Notes: Source of supplied title: Title based on contents of fonds.
