A Copernican Revolution in Science and Religion:The Entangled State
1 A Copernican Revolution in Science and Religion Towards a Third Millennium Spirituality:The Entangled State of God and Humanity Peter B. Todd Synopsis As the title, The Entangled State of God and Humanity suggests, this lecture dispenses with the pre-Copernican, patriarchal, anthropomorphic image of God while presenting a case for a third millennium theology illuminated by insights from archetypal depth psychology, quantum physics, neuroscience and evolutionary biology. It attempts to smash the conceptual barriers between science and religion and in so doing, it may contribute to a Copernican revolution which reconciles both perspectives which have been apparently irreconcilable opposites since the sixteenth century. The published work of C.G. Jung, Wolfgang Pauli, David Bohm and Teilhard de Chardin outline a process whereby matter evolves in increasing complexity from sub-atomic particles to the human brain and the emergence of a reflective consciousness leading to a noosphere evolving towards an Omega point. The noosphere is the envelope of consciousness and meaning superimposed upon the biosphere a concept central to the evolutionary thought of visionary Jesuit palaeontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (The Phenomenon of Man). His central ideas, like those of Jung with his archetypes, in particular that of the Self, provide intimations of a numinous principle implicit in cosmology and the discovery that in and through humanity, evolution becomes not only conscious of itself but also directed and purposive. Although in Jung’s conception it was a “late-born offspring of the unconscious soul”, consciousness has become the mirror which the universe has evolved to reflect upon itself and in which its very existence is revealed. -

I lay back against the tree, an old sequoia, and gazed out across the canal and meadows. Ducks, swans and waterfowl glided by. Swans, they had found their life-long mates and seemed to be happy. Cows grazed. They shared one randy bull. Not for me! The sails of a windmill turned gently on the horizon. Ask the Universe? Could it really be that simple? I wondered. The only way to find out was to try. I yearned for a companion, a lover with whom I could share intimately and deeply, and lay there dreaming of the ideal man walking into my life. I dreamed and yes the dream could be real; but who was the ideal man for me? The day was changing into evening. All was becoming still. I stretched my body like the trees around me, breathing in the sweet smell of pine. -

This Peace Palace would serve as a center for the prevention of crime and terrorism in Oshawa. In light of the recent terrorist threat in our nation and the upsurge of violent crime in Toronto and other cities earlier this year, you wil agree that it is urgent that we implement innovative new programs for preventing crime and terrorism. The programs that would be offered by our organization through the Peace Palace wil create a measurable effect of peace and harmony for the whole city, which wil be seen in reduced crime rates and other negative trends, as well as increased positive social and economic trends.(Please see the enclosed review of the scientifically-validated benefits that you can expect for the city from the Peace Palace programs). Our organization wil arange the financing for the Peace Palace, but would like the city to provide the land. The Peace Palace would be a two-story structre of approximately 12,000 sq. ft. and wil require approximately 1 acre ofland, which could be in any city park or other lands owned by the city. -
Law of Attraction (New Thought)
Law of attraction (New Thought) In the New Thought philosophy, the Law of Attraction is the belief that positive or negative thoughts bring positive or negative experiences into a person's life.[1][2] The belief is based on the ideas that people and their thoughts are made from pure energy, and that through the process of like energy attracting like energy a person can improve their health, wealth, and personal relationships. Advocates generally combine cognitive reframing techniques with affirmations and creative visualization to replace limiting or self-destructive ("negative") thoughts with more empowered, adaptive ("positive") thoughts. A key component of the philosophy is the idea that in order to effectively change one's negative thinking patterns, one must also "feel" (through creative visualization) that the desired changes have already occurred. This combination of positive thought and positive emotion is believed to allow one to attract positive experiences and opportunities by achieving resonance with the proposed energetic law.[3] The Law of Attraction has no scientific basis[4] and has been dubbed a pseudoscience.[5] A number of researchers have criticized the misuse of scientific concepts by its proponents.[4][6][7][8] Contents History Descriptions Philosophical and religious basis Criticism Prominent supporters See also Notes Sources External links History The New Thought (Law of Attraction Origins) grew out of the teachings of Phineas Quimby in the early 19th century. Early in his life, Quimby was diagnosed with tuberculosis. However, medicinal treatment wasn't working, so he began carriage riding through his hometown, Lebanon, New Hampshire. He then regained his health and recovered, an event that prompted his study of "mind over body".[9] Although he never used the words 'Law of Attraction', he explained this in a statement that captured the concept in the field of health: the trouble is in the mind, for the body is only the house for the mind to dwell in, and we put a value on it according to its worth. -
A Postmodern Paradox
The Self-Help Book in the Therapeutic Ontosphere: A Postmodern Paradox By Jean Collingsworth Abstract The self-help book is a prominent cultural and commercial phenomenon in the therapeutic ontosphere which permeates contemporary life. The generic term ‘on- tosphere’ is here co-opted from IT to describe a notional social space in which influential conceptualisations and shared assumptions about personal values and entitlements operate without interrogation in the demotic apprehension of ‘reali- ty’. It thus complements the established critical terms ‘discourse’ and ‘episteme’. In the therapeutic ontosphere the normal vicissitudes of life are increasingly inter- preted as personal catastrophes. As new issues of concern are defined, it is as- sumed that an individual will need help to deal with them and live successfully. Advice-giving has become big business and the self-help book is now an im- portant postmodern commodity. However a paradox emerges when the content and ideology of this apparently postmodern artifact is examined. In its topical eclecticism the genre is indeed unaligned with those traditional ‘grand narratives’ and collective value systems which the postmodern critical project has sought to discredit. It endorses relativism, celebrates reflexivity and valorizes many kinds of ‘personal truth’. Moreover readers are encouraged towards self-renovation through a process of ‘bricolage’ which involves selecting advice from a diverse ethical menu alongside which many ‘little narratives’ of localized lived experi- ence are presented as supportive exemplars. However in asserting the pragmatic power of individual instrumentality in an episteme which has seen the critical de- centering of the human subject, the self-help book perpetuates the liberal- humanist notion of an essential personal identity whose stable core is axiomatic in traditional ethical advice. -

The Numinous and the Archetypes As Timeless, Cosmic Ordering and Regulating Principles in Evolution
1 The Numinous and the Archetypes as Timeless, Cosmic Ordering and Regulating Principles in Evolution ©Peter B. Todd Introduction: Theology and the Psychophysical Problem The Jung/Pauli concept of the unconscious archetypes as timeless cosmic ordering and regulating principles verifiable in the external world and (phenomenologically) in the internal world of ethe psych suggests concepts of mind which transcend that of the individual in a transpersonal sense. And a numinous dimension implicit in the evolutionary process. As the Bohm/Hiley treatment of active information as the bridge between the mental and the physical extends Mind indefinitely beyond the human species. In the spirit of physicist Erwin Schrödinger’s (2007) comments on extended Mind, humanity could be viewed as responsible for the future of the biosphere and responding to the figurative “summonses” of global warming and pandemics such as HIV/AIDS. Paradoxically, conservative and fundamentalist theologies themselves strangle God with the spatiotemporal hold by which they are bound while resisting the integration of transdisciplinary empirical scientific knowledge into their considerations of the so‐called “psychophysical” or mind‐ matter problem, and the timelessness of the unconscious dimensions of the Self explored in neuroscience, depth psychology and quantum physics. A process (Incarnational) theology inseminated by the theory of evolution and empirical evidence of ‘directed’ mutation might facilitate the creation of bridges between science and religion. So that God becomes conscious through and is completed by humankind as well as being in the Jungian sense archetypal, immanent and transcendent. However such a paradigm shift would entail the rejection of the belief in Biblical inerrancy which has characterized fundamentalist religious orthodoxies.
