Between 1950 and 1963, the British Board of Film Classification issued the following certificates to classify and give guidance to audiences on the content and language of the film. These designations were used by the Army Kinema Corporation (AKC) in its cinema programmes: U stands for Universal and is suitable for children; A stands for Adult and children must be accompanied by an adult to watch this film. For the first time, a compulsory certificate, X, was introduced allowing only those aged 16 and older to enter, replacing the H certificate that was used between 1932-1950.
