In-Class Exercise
PROBLEM SET 3—STATS 210 Due: July 29, 2004 1. A group of researchers was studying lifetime lead exposure and IQ in 7-year old kids. They classified 100 children as having “high,” “medium,” or “low” exposure based on the lead concentrations in their teeth (using baby teeth that had fallen out). Then they measured their IQ on a standard, age-appropriate IQ test, the results of which are known to have a nice normal distribution in the population. The following multiple linear regression equation resulted: IQ = 100 + (-2)*(1 if exposure=medium, 0 if low or high) + (-10)*(1 if exposure=high, 0 if low or medium) Regression coefficients: βˆ = −2; s.e.(βˆ ) = .5 1 1 ˆ ˆ β 2 = −10; s.e.(β 2 ) = .8 a. What is the p-value for the test of the null hypothesis that β1=0? That β2=0? Note: Regression coefficients are a test statistic (like a mean or difference in means), and thus have a sampling distribution. The sampling distribution of an estimated regression coefficient ˆ ˆ is a t-distribution: β ~ Tn−k (β , s.e.(β ) ): where n is the sample size; k is the number of estimated coefficients in the model, including the intercept; β is the “true” slope between the predictor and outcome; and the standard error of β represents the variability that we expect to see in estimates of β based on sample sizes of n. ˆ ˆ Correspondingly, the null distribution of β is β ~ Tn−k (0, s.e.(β ) ); (a slope of 0 indicates no relationship between the predictor and the outcome). -

Describe the range of applications of statistics 2. Identify situations in which statistics can be misleading 3. Define "Statistics" Statistics include numerical facts and figures. For instance: • The largest earthquake measured 9.2 on the Richter scale. • Men are at least 10 times more likely than women to commit murder. • One in every 8 South Africans is HIV positive. • By the year 2020, there will be 15 people aged 65 and over for every new baby born. The study of statistics involves math and relies upon calculations of numbers. But it also relies heavily on how the numbers are chosen and how the statistics are interpreted. For example, consider the following three scenarios and the interpretations based upon the presented statistics. You will find that the numbers may be right, but the interpretation may be wrong. Try to identify a major flaw with each interpretation before we describe it. -

2012 Olympic Games Statistics - Men’s Marathon by K Ken Nakamura Records to look for in London: 1) The runners from a single nation never won both men and women’s marathon in OG. Will it change in London? 2) No nation ever swept the medal in the marathon. The BBC, Austerity and Broadcasting the 1948 Olympic Games Richard
The BBC, Austerity and Broadcasting the 1948 Olympic Games Richard Haynes The International Journal of the History of Sport, Vol. 27, No. 6, April 2010, 1025-1042. ISSN: 0952-3367 Abstract Based on original archive research, including papers held in the BBC Written Archives Centre, and interviews with those involved, this paper analyses the historical importance for the BBC of the 1948 Games as the first publicly televised Olympics. In particular, the paper addresses the management of operations by the Head of Outside Broadcasting at the BBC, Seymour Joly de Lotbiniere. De Lotbiniere had been an important figure in the development of outside broadcasting commentaries during the inter-war period and was given the task of organising the radio and television coverage of the London Games in 1948. The paper examines the technical, operational and ideological issues raised by the event for the BBC and its legacy for the development of live televised outside broadcasts from sport. The analysis suggests the BBC’s ability to host international broadcasters became a matter of prestige and its forays into television a sign of its emerging post-War modernity. “We believe that the Games will end being a very big ‘story’ and that a sufficiency of broadcasting facilities efficiently administered will be important to British prestige throughout the world.” [1] Introduction The quotation above is taken from an internal memo from the BBC’s then Director of Outside Broadcasts Seymour Joly de Lotbiniere to the Senior Controller of Programmes. It emphasized the importance to the BBC of its preparations to broadcast from the 1948 London Olympic Games. -
