She has been unjustly imprisoned for her human rights activities since November 2016. On 8 April, Iranian human rights defender Atena Daemi started a hunger strike in Evin prison in protest at the suspended prison sentences imposed on her sisters Hanieh and Ensieh for “insulting public officers on duty”. Both were sentenced to suspended prison terms of three months and one day by a criminal court in Tehran on 13 March. According to her family, Atena’s health has seriously deteriorated. She is believed to have lost about 12 kg of her weight. She is suffering from sustained nausea, vomiting, blood pressure fluctuations, and severe kidney pain. She briefly lost consciousness on 2 May. She was briefly transferred to a hospital outside prison on 8 May where some medical tests were carried out but she was returned to prison before even the test results came in. Doctors have warned that her kidney infection has reached critical levels and she needs immediate hospitalization. Prison officials are failing to provide her with adequate medical care. On 29 April, Atena Daemi told her family that prison medical doctors keep writing in their reports that her health is normal and that she is “faking” her illness. In late April, she was transferred to the prison medical clinic to receive an electrocardiogram (ECG) test but the nurse, who was a male, refused to administer the test.

Further information on UA: 174/13 Index: MDE 13/7840/2018 Iran Date: 08 February 2018 URGENT ACTION THREE HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS ON HUNGER STRIKE Iranian women human rights defenders and prisoners of conscience Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee and Atena Daemi started a hunger strike on 3 February in protest at their transfer to a prison where women convicted of violent offences are held in inhumane conditions. Earlier, on 27 January, human rights defender Arash Sadeghi started a hunger strike to demand that they are returned to their previous place of detention. He is critically-ill. On 24 January, unjustly imprisoned human rights defenders Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee and Atena Daemi were transferred from Tehran’s Evin prison to Shahr-e Rey Prison in the city of Varamin, near Tehran. According to the women, male prison officials subjected them to insults and sexual slurs and began to kick and punch them when they peacefully protested against their transfer, arguing that it was illegal and violated the regulations governing the classification of prisoners based on the severity of the crime committed and the risk they pose to society and each other. They said the beating only stopped because two female guards intervened. Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee and Atena Daemi started a hunger strike on 3 February in protest at the transfer. Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee and Atena Daemi are exposed to a high risk of being tortured or otherwise ill-treated. Shahr-e Rey prison is a disused chicken house that holds hundreds of women convicted of violent offences in overcrowded and unhygienic conditions, without access to safe drinkable water, decent food, medicine and fresh air.

http://women.ncr-iran.org NCRI Women’s Committee @womenncri 1 Iran’s women paying the price of freedom Iranian women’s resistance in prisons overshadowed the news of February and March. Topping them all was the continuing hunger strike of political prisoner Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee and her staunch resistance along with her fellow inmate Atena Daemi. Ms. Iraee is in coma after 62 days of hunger strike in protest to her unlawful exile to the notorious Qarchak Prison in breach of the principle of separation of prisoners’ categories, demanding to be returned to the Women’s Ward in Evin Prison. The NCRI Women’s Committee issued a call, urging human rights and women’s rights organizations to immediately take effective measures to save Golrokh Iraee and obtain her unconditional release. Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee and Atena Daemi A writer and a human rights activist, Ms. Iraee has been sentenced to six years in jail for writing an unpublished book on the cruel punishment of stoning. Her husband Arash Sadeghi, also a human rights advocate serving a 19-year prison term, put his life on the line by staging a 72-day hunger strike protesting the illegal arrest and detention of his wife, and demanding her release. The imprisoned couple attracted nationwide and global support, forcing the regime to release Ms. Iraee. Nevertheless, security forces re-arrested her in January 2017 reneging on the promise made by the Prosecutor. Throughout her imprisonment, Ms. Iraee has been speaking out against the regime’s injustices, her latest being an open letter on January 9 amidst the nationwide uprising demanding regime change.

However, there were no significant improvements in the human rights situation during the year, as hard-liners in control of key state institutions, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the judiciary, appeared determined to prevent any attempts at reform. With elections for the parliament and the Assembly of Experts scheduled for February 2016, hard-liners launched a new crackdown in 2015. At least four journalists were arrested, while several intellectuals, artists, and human rights activists were sentenced to lengthy prison terms. Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian, an Iranian- American, was sentenced to an unspecified prison term following a closed-door trial on widely criticized espionage charges. There was also a surge in executions during the year, with estimates indicating that the number easily exceeded the reported total for 2014. • Iran 2020 Human Rights Report
IRAN 2020 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Islamic Republic of Iran is an authoritarian theocratic republic with a Shia Islamic political system based on velayat-e faqih (guardianship of the jurist). Shia clergy, most notably the rahbar (supreme leader), and political leaders vetted by the clergy dominate key power structures. The supreme leader is the head of state. The members of the Assembly of Experts are nominally directly elected in popular elections. The assembly selects and may dismiss the supreme leader. The candidates for the Assembly of Experts, however, are vetted by the Guardian Council (see below) and are therefore selected indirectly by the supreme leader himself. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has held the position since 1989. He has direct or indirect control over the legislative and executive branches of government through unelected councils under his authority. The supreme leader holds constitutional authority over the judiciary, government-run media, and other key institutions. While mechanisms for popular election exist for the president, who is head of government, and for the Islamic Consultative Assembly (parliament or majles), the unelected Guardian Council vets candidates, routinely disqualifying them based on political or other considerations, and controls the election process. The supreme leader appoints half of the 12-member Guardian Council, while the head of the judiciary (who is appointed by the supreme leader) appoints the other half. Presidential elections held in 2017 and parliamentary elections held during the year were not considered free and fair. The supreme leader holds ultimate authority over all security agencies. Several agencies share responsibility for law enforcement and maintaining order, including the Ministry of Intelligence and Security and law enforcement forces under the Interior Ministry, which report to the president, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which reports directly to the supreme leader.
