The Itinerary The 11-day trip cost includes trip insurance, round-trip transfer to Kansas City International, airfare, chartered coaches, river boat and rail transportation, all hotels, most , a waist wallet, maps, a trip guidebook, and entrance fees to the noted attractions below: (Although changes to the itinerary are rare, the trip coordinators reserve the right to make them for reasons including an unexpected change in a venue’s operating hours.)

Day 1, the journey begins, Wednesday, March 11 The group leaves SFCC’s front parking lot in the morning for the departing flight from Kansas City, arriving at approximately 7:10 a.m. on March 12 at Heathrow Airport in London, England.

Day 2, London and Greenwich, Thursday, March 12 A coach will transport us to Greenwich, where we will lodge for the night. We will board a river taxi on the River Thames, which will transport us into the heart of London. Students can explore London including, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace (among others), and take the river taxi back to Greenwich. The Greenwich Pier is just a few minutes’ walk to a number of popular tourist attractions including The Painted Hall, which took 19 years to complete and serves as the setting for numerous films including Sherlock Holmes, A of Shadows; Pirates of the Caribbean, On Stranger Shores; and Les Miserables. Other attractions near Greenwich and the Thames River include Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and the Greenwich Market.

Day 3, France and Belguim, Friday, March 13 We will start the day by traveling via the English Channel Tunnel, or Chunnel Train, to Dunkirk, France. A stop here will include a tour of the Operation Dynamo Museum. We end the day in Bruges, Belgium.

Day 4, Belguim and Luxembourg, Saturday, March 14 The morning features an opportunity to shop the markets and stroll along the beautiful canals of the 800 year- old historic city of Bruges, the Venice of the North. Bruges sites not to be missed, include Basilica of the Holy Blood and its centuries old vessel that holds the cloth that allegedly wiped the brow of Christ, the Belfry Tower, Church of Our Lady, featuring Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child, and the Town Hall in Burg Square.

By later afternoon, we will be en route to Luxembourg, our home for the evening.

Day 5, Luxembourg to Germany, Sunday, March 15 We head to Vianden to explore Vianden Castle and enjoy in the village before boarding the coach to Germany.

The Hotel Der Brielhof in Hechingen, Germany, will provide dinner and lodging for the night.

Day 6, Germany to , Monday, March 16 A tour of Hohenzollern Castle, which served as the headquarters of the Prussian royal family, will start the day. We will have lunch on the castle grounds and board the coach to , Austria.

Day 7, Salzburg, Austria, Tuesday, March 17 Salzburg, Austria, will be our home for three nights. On this day, we plan to take a day trip to Hallstatt, Austria. Hallstatt, which is only accessible via a picturesque ferry ride across Lake Hallstatt and is an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, is known for having the oldest salt mine in the world.

Day 8, Salzburg, Austria, Wednesday, March 18 We will spend a busy day in Salzburg, early home of composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Travelers will have opportunities to explore Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart Wohnhaus, and Getreidegasse. We end the day together with traditional .

Day 9, Return to Germany, Thursday, March 19 We begin our trek back to Germany with a stop at Neuschwanstein Castle, which is thought to have been the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella castle.

We end the day in Munich, Germany, home for our final two nights.

Day 10, Dachau Concentration Camp, Friday, March 20 A tour of Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site will start the day. The site was established as the first concentration camp for political prisoners and served as a model for all later concentration camps during Adolf Hitler’s reign and WWII.

After a somber morning, we will return to Munich to explore for the remainder of the day. In the evening, we’ll celebrate our memories with a formal dining experience.

Day 11, our journey comes to an end, Saturday, March 21 Our flight departs from Munich at 9:30 a.m. and arrives in Kansas City at 5:47 p.m.

Trip Cost, Application Information and Payment Plan The trip is intended for scholarly students willing to experience and appreciate the European lifestyles that many Americans find inconvenient: six or more miles of walking each day, small hotel rooms even in the more expensive venues, smaller portions featuring seafood and lamb, no ice in the drinks and no free refills. Students are representatives of the college at all times, a fact reflected in their comments, conduct, and attitude. Sorry, students on academic probation or with a history of financial aid probation aren’t eligible. The trip cost is $3200 per double-occupancy hotel room plus three credit hours of tuition and fees for enrollment in spring 2020 Leadership through Cultural Experiences (SS 125). Students wishing to participate must complete an application on or before September 13 and provide two references (teachers, employers, or other professionals but no family members, please). Applicants unknown to the instructors may go through an interview process. The trip cost may fluctuate slightly due to currency rates and international taxes. Once accepted, a $100 non- refundable trip deposit is due in the business office by October 18, 2019, a $1500 non-refundable second payment is due to the business office by December 6, 2019, and the remaining balance of $1600 is due before January 17, 2020.
