Also on Ashe, 2012 US Open champion Andy Murray meets Marcel Granollers not before 1 pm. No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka and No. 6 seed Kei Nishikori face qualifiers on Louis Armstrong Stadium, while the Grandstand features 22-year-old Dominic Thiem and 21-year-old Nick Kyrgios. With his come-from-behind win over John Millman on Tuesday, the eighth- seeded Thiem improved to 20-1 this season in deciding sets. He entered 2016 with a 19-21 deciding-set record. Johnson trailed Evgeny Donskoy 6-4, 6-1, 5-2 and served at Love-40 before surviving six match points and securing his second career comeback from two sets down. His reward is a date with del Potro, who returns to the court where – as a 20-year-old – he ended Roger Federer’s 40-match tournament win streak and captured his first Grand Slam title. Four wrist surgeries later, del Potro brought back memories of his 2009 US Open run when he defeated Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal en route to the silver medal at the Rio Olympics last month. Earlier on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Murray faces Granollers for the eighth time on tour. The No. 2 seed is 6-1 against the Spaniard, having never lost a set to him in three hard-court meetings. Murray has reached the third round or better in 33 consecutive Grand Slam appearances, highlighted by three straight finals this season. If Murray advances to his third US Open final, he will be the fourth man in the Open Era to play four Grand Slam championship matches in a calendar year (Djokovic in 2015; Federer in 2004, 2006 and 2007; and Rod Laver in 1969). Qualifiers Karen Khachanov and Alessandro Giannessi will challenge Nishikori and Wawrinka respectively on Louis Armstrong Stadium. Both qualifiers were victorious in their Grand Slam main draw debuts on Tuesday, with Giannessi defeating Denis Kudla by the unique score of 0-6, 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-0. The 26-year-old Italian tried and failed to qualify eight times at majors prior to the 2016 US Open, while Khachanov had fallen five times in Grand Slam qualifying attempts. Khachanov, a 20-year-old from Moscow, is part of the ATP World Tour’s ‘Next Generation’ of Top 200 players born in 1995 or later. He broke into the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings on June 6. Americans and Eastern Europeans will go head-to-head when 19-year-old qualifier Jared Donaldson meets Viktor Troicki on Court 13 and Donald Young confronts No. 21 seed Ivo Karlovic on Court 17. In the first round… o Donaldson earned the biggest win of his career by beating World No. 14 David Goffin 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-0. o Troicki was one of seven players to rally from two sets down, edging Radu Albot in a final-set tiebreaker. o Young, 27, began his 12th consecutive US Open campaign by defeating Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets. o Karlovic set a US Open record by hitting 61 aces in his five-set win over Yen-Hsun Lu (stats kept since 1991). 2016 US OPEN – Day 4 Media Notes Thursday, September 1, 2016 Page 2 of 21 [2] Andy Murray (GBR) vs Marcel Granollers (ESP) Murray Leads 6-1 06 Barcelona (Spain) Clay R64 Andy Murray 4-6 6-4 6-2 09 Australian Open (Australia) Hard R64 Andy Murray 6-4 6-2 6-2 13 ATP Masters 1000 Rome (Italy) Clay R32 Marcel Granollers 6-3 6-7(5) ret 13 ATP Masters 1000 Montréal (Canada) Hard R32 Andy Murray 6-4 7-6(2) 14 ATP Masters 1000 Rome (Italy) Clay R32 Andy Murray 6-2 7-5 15 ATP Masters 1000 Madrid (Spain) Clay R16 Andy Murray 6-2 6-0 16 ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells (U.S.A.)
