Wednesday’s Stadium Court schedule continues with opening matches for high-flying 19-year-old Alexander Zverev and top three seeds John Isner, Gael Monfils and Bernard Tomic. Zverev, the No. 19 seed currently at a career-high No. 27, enters a first career showdown with American 18-year-old Taylor Fritz, who has a 6-4 record on home soil in 2016 boosted by his run to the Memphis final in February (l. to Nishikori). Monfils’ match with Yen-Hsun Lu follows, with the French No. 2 seed hoping to pick up where he left off on his last appearance in 2011 when he reached the final (l. to Stepanek), before top seed and three-time finalist Isner faces Australia’s James Duckworth for the first time. The U.S. No. 1 is looking to extend his ATP World Tour title streak to seven consecutive seasons – seven of his 10 career ATP World Tour titles have come in July or August. Last up on Stadium Court, No. 3 seed Tomic takes on Donald Young, who twice came out on top in three sets when the duo met on American hard courts in 2015. The Grandstand 1 action starts with an all-African match-up as Malek Jaziri takes on South Africa’s No. 9 seed Kevin Anderson, who won their previous encounter at Washington in the 2014 third round, the second of his three straight-sets victories against the Tunisian. Slovakian Lukas Lacko’s first hard-court win of 2016 in the first round has set up a showdown with U.S. No. 6 seed Jack Sock, who reached the final of his last ATP World Tour tournament on home soil at Houston (l. to Monaco). Wrapping up the action, 2010 finalist Marcos Baghdatis, the No. 15 seed, faces John Millman, one of four Australians to reach the second round (also Tomic (1R bye), James Duckworth, and Jordan Thompson). There’s American interest on Grandstand 2 as well, where qualifier Ryan Harrison takes on No. 10 seed Viktor Troicki and Brian Baker faces No. 13 seed Ivo Karlovic, who won the Newport title last week. At 37 years, 4 months, Karlovic became the oldest ATP World Tour singles champion since Marty Riessen (37 years, 9 months) in 1979 (Lafayette, La.).Japan is well represented despite the absence of 2015 champion Kei Nishikori, as Yuichi Sugita takes on Croatian No. 16 seed Borna Coric, while over on Court 1 Yoshihito Nishioka faces Gilles Muller, who like Isner and Baghdatis reached the final here 12 years ago in his debut (d. No. 6 Agassi SF,l. to No. 8 Hewitt F).
