GO- Gospel (Interchangeable with CC. Usually older in style than CC)
FK- Folk - For this syllabus, Folk Music is Traditional music in contemporary piano arrangements. Pieces that do not include modern harmony or rhythms shall be excluded from this list.
PM- Program Music - Music intended to convey an impression of a definite series of images, scenes, or events. Often interchangeable with CP and BA
IM - Impressionistic (E.g. Debussy and Ravel)
JA - Jazz - A kind of music of African-American origin, characterized by syncopated rhythms, solo and group improvisation, and a variety of harmonic idioms and instrumental techniques. LA - Latin - The pieces must include Latin rhythmic idioms, as found in sub genres such as Bossanova and Salsa. Rumba Music and Calypso music shall be included in this genre.
LS - Lyric Style Piece (BA - Ballad) - This type of repertoire features singable melodies.
NB - Neo-Baroque (Neo - simply indicates new but in the older style)
NC - Neo-Classical
NI - Neo-Impressionism
NR - Neo-Romantic
MT - Movie Theme
RA - Rag - features music such as the pieces by Scott Joplin. Rag features syncopated rhythms and no swing. Swing and Rag together is usually considered too much.
RO - Rock - Rock is a kind of music with simple tunes and a very strong beat (8th are usually even). This includes sub genres such as Rock'n'Roll, Disco, the styles of composes such as Elton John, Billy Joel and Jerry Lee Lewis.
SW - Swing, Big Band style and basically anything with swing 8ths or pieces in triple signatures such as 12/8. Swing is often included in Blues. Pieces in these two genres may be interchangeable for exam purposes.
