6319 W. Roosevelt Rd. Berwyn, IL 708-317-4242 Antronios-Bar-and-Grill DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE by Marc “Moose” Moder LET ME HAVE MY DISCO MOMENT!

I was recently giggling to myself at a DJ gig: While I played a smart remix of Adele’s “Someone Like You,” I realized some of the audience was really working it to what was basically the slit-your-wrist track of 2011- 2012, just remixed. What should be a freeing, spirited night out, was tinged with a bit of sorrow—the essence of drama queen.

As I look back on my upbringing, being reared on ‘80s and ‘90s stalwarts like Billy Bragg, Morrissey, Depeche Mode and Beautiful South, I was reminded that maybe, at least musically, I was a drama queen too. As I found my more traditional gayness, I always gravitated to the juxtaposition of dance and drama. From Erasure to Gloria Gaynor, ABBA to Yaz, some of the hottest tracks in history end with a broken heart.

So if you like your big moments decidedly disco but are looking to the future, start out with the most addicting cut of the last year, Bright Light Bright Light’s “Disco Moment.” With a strong base in the vocal style of Erasure, singer Rod Thomas conveys the sadness of a man broken down, internalizing a fight with his BF and slowly realizing it’s over while his (former) man twirls the floor like he won the fight. As the song opens, you know its going downhill: “If this is just another awkward conversation that we have. Let’s leave it ‘til the morning, I want to go home ... .”

“Experimenting With Rugs” is not the most dramatic (or descriptive) title in dance history, but pop singer Florrie croons Kylie-style over the genius beats of Fred Falke: “My heart isn’t big enough, no more. And I forgot what I see in you. ‘Cuz we’ve gone too far. I’ve forgotten who you are. Enough’s enough. I’m over you.” Ouch. Hey, wait. I just got the Florrie/Rugs pun. Punny.

However, the queen of crying on the dancefloor is, of course, : The pitiful character study in one-way love, “Call Your Girlfiend;” the sci-fi (or is it) love letter, “The Girl and The Robot;” and the guide to beginning stalking, “.” Robyn’s taken some of the gleeful fun of Madonna and Kylie, added a touch of crazy, and dramatically revealed the wallflower cum drama queen crying in the corner. Because sometimes joy isn’t the reason we’re spinning our asses off at 3 a.m.

Spin/Cry to your disco favorites as Moose and DJ Voxbox revive an era with Glenwood’ monthy RetroTea Dance, starting March 25.

Just when you think that you’ve lived through the worst pain you could possibly feel, love comes up with a new punch. You learn to dodge most, but every now and then it lands one square in your jaw. Or sometimes you get struck with a sucker punch to the gut that takes your breath away. You can dance around these brutal attacks, which is exhausting, or you can just learn to take a fucking hit. Another option is to stay out of the ring altogether. But where’s the sport in that? If you get knocked down, despite what people have been telling you all of your life, you don’t have to get back up; you can stay down. You can lay there beaten and broken until you have the strength to actually stand up on your own and remain standing. That is what Brandon is doing now. Lying in his bed wishing the bruises on his heart would heal before his brain started poking at them. He’s fine through most of the night most of the time, but at some point or another he rolls over. That’s when he often realizes that he is in bed alone. He isn’t conscious enough to brace himself for this one, and it’s a smack in the face that wakes him with a sting. It’s the surprise attacks that get you and no one seems to warn you about them when a relationship ends. When he is awake and rational, this sort of thing wouldn’t bother him at all. It’s been over a year and he has moved on to bigger and better things. That’s when love knows to pull these sneaky maneuvers. Ones that leave you feeling helpless and sad when moments before you were lost in a dream. Brandon isn’t sure why this keeps happening, though, thankfully, with decreasing frequency. He thinks it may be a reminder of the love he felt for someone before he gets over the loss of it completely. Maybe it’s a sign that he is healing but just isn’t quite healed yet. Instead of getting up and shaking it off, he just lays there trying to make sense of it. Waiting and hoping for the day that a nightmare is no longer the part of bedtime when he is awake. He knows it has to come soon. It just doesn’t seem right that he still feels so bad what the other pillow doesn’t smell like anyone anymore. He holds that pillow like a shield and plays dead until he slowly falls back to sleep.
