The article deals with the landscape arrangement of monumental sculptures in the creative work of Arnold Rӧhring. The text reviews the role and the importance of landscape arrangement of monumental sculptures in the architectural composition of the city of Lviv. Examples of works of monumental sculpture of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are described in the article. Keywords: monumental sculpture, Arnold Rӧhring, landscape organization, city parks. 1. Introduction The city center of Lviv is characterized by richness and diversity of natural, urban and architectural forms, which, together, form a unique historical landscape-architectural complex. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the city center developed rapidly by building up, mainly, the southern sector of the city. After construction of an underground reservoir for the Poltva river, a new central cell began to be formed. Construction of a considerable number of residential and public buildings led, among others, to erection of the building of the Diet of Galicia and Lodomeria. According to the principles of urban contemporary European development, the planning of planted boulevards and city parks was initiated. On the boulevards, squares and parks there were located monumental sculptures, mostly the memorials of famous public figures, writers and poets. The tradition of combination of sculptures and objects of the landscape in Europe goes back to Ancient Rome. -

This research is focused on art-stylistic, formative and technological peculiarities of the sculptural works of Lviv from the 19th to early 20 centuries. It analyzes the character of interaction of architecture and sculpture as a phenomenon of the synthesis of spatial arts. Key words: sculpture, style, carving studio, tombstones, bas-relief, architectural décor, composition, linear painting, form. 1. Introduction The phenomenon of the sculpture connected with the architecture of Lviv lied in the complexity of its poly-ethnic structure; the accretion of themes and motives, enriched by various national and religious traditions; and also in the local cultural achievements. Today, the necessity of the research, restoration and conservation of these unique sculptural landmarks is of paramount importance. The study of the stylistic evolution of sculpture in the domain of Lviv architecture has not been the subject of the art history science yet and is suggested for consideration for the first time. 2. Basic Theory Owing to the methodological application of aesthetic and critical analysis of the art, we have shown peculiarities of the formal structure of the works, interaction of the means of artistic expression and conceptual system of some artists. Historical developmental stages of the works, as well as their technological and stylistic changes in time have been brought to light and compared. -

Architectural Education at Lviv Polytechnic During the Interwar Period

The history of architectural education during the interwar period is presented in this article. The basic directions of an architectural education development in Lviv of this time have been determined and the activity of the most prominent representatives of the Lviv architectural school has been analyzed. Key words: Lviv Polytechnic, Department of Architecture, architects, professors. 1. Introduction. In 1928–1929, Witold Minkiewicz was elected the rector of the Lviv Polytechnic where he worked as an architect and lecturer. In his inaugural speech he said: “Contemporary architecture rejects everything that is not caused by necessity. It corresponds with the guidelines of contemporary civilisation, aimed at the most minute exploitation of the natural properties to intensify the level of public life. The old forms are replaced by construction problems. The rhythm of repetitive elements of standardized building and monumental, primitive forms of factories influence artistic imagination stronger than stylish old-fashioned templates. The natural charm of the material used in accordance with its structure and properties, replaces mostly insincere effect forms of old” [1]. In this way, within the walls of Lviv Polytechnic, educating the future architects was officially legitimized that broke with Traditionalism and Historicism and changed the focus to assimilating new modern forms, materials and construction techniques.
