“In the Mood”—Glenn Miller (1939) Added to the National Recording Registry: 2004 Essay by Cary O’Dell Glenn Miller Original release label “Sun Valley Serenade” Though Glenn Miller and His Orchestra’s well-known, robust and swinging hit “In the Mood” was recorded in 1939 (and was written even earlier), it has since come to symbolize the 1940s, World War II, and the entire Big Band Era. Its resounding success—becoming a hit twice, once in 1940 and again in 1943—and its frequent reprisal by other artists has solidified it as a time- traversing classic. Covered innumerable times, “In the Mood” has endured in two versions, its original instrumental (the specific recording added to the Registry in 2004) and a version with lyrics. The music was written (or written down) by Joe Garland, a Tin Pan Alley tunesmith who also composed “Leap Frog” for Les Brown and his band. The lyrics are by Andy Razaf who would also contribute the words to “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Honeysuckle Rose.” For as much as it was an original work, “In the Mood” is also an amalgamation, a “mash-up” before the term was coined. It arrived at its creation via the mixture and integration of three or four different riffs from various earlier works. Its earliest elements can be found in “Clarinet Getaway,” from 1925, recorded by Jimmy O’Bryant, an Arkansas bandleader. For his Paramount label instrumental, O’Bryant was part of a four-person ensemble, featuring a clarinet (played by O’Bryant), a piano, coronet and washboard. Five years later, the jazz piece “Tar Paper Stomp” by Joseph “Wingy” Manone, from 1930, beget “In the Mood’s” signature musical phrase. -

Women have participated in numerous ways, and in a variety of complex cultural contexts, throughout the history of jazz in New Orleans. While we do see traces of women’s participation in extant New Orleans jazz histories, we seldom see women presented as central to jazz culture. Therefore, they tend to appear to occupy minor or supporting roles, if they appear at all. This Research Study uses a feminist perspective to increase our knowledge of women and gender in New Orleans jazz history, roughly between 1880 and 1980, with an emphasis on the earlier years. Dec. 10, 1997 Introduction: Irving Randolph was my very good friend, and every time I visited New York, I used to stay with him and his wife Henrietta at their apartment on Hamilton Terrace, close to Columbia University. He was really a prince, a very pleasant personality with so much humour. We had so much fun together, and he taught me to drink Bells whisky, his favourite brand. He is much underrated as a trumpet artist, although at his best in the middle 1930s, he had no peers only equals. Unfortunately he was taken ill in 1939, and he told me that when he returned to music, his embouchure never came back with him. The solography below is basically the one printed as Vol. 12 (1982) in my Jazz Solography series, but now continued until the end of his musical career. History: First professional work with Fate Marable’s Band, then joined Norman Mason’s Carolina Melodists. With drummer Floyd Campbell’s Orchestra (1928), then worked with Alphonso Trent and J. Frank Terry’s Band before joining Andy Kirk from 1931-1933, played occasionally for Fletcher Henderson early in 1934, spell with Benny Carter, then became regular member of Fletcher Henderson’s band from July 1934. Joined Cab Calloway from spring 1935 until late 1939, when he joined Ella Fitzgerald. With Don Redman from May 1943, then Edmond Hall sextet throughout the late 1940s. -

NIMS JAZZ WALK OF FAME, AND GET THE BEST VIEW OF NEW ORLEANS’ SKYLINE COPYRIGHT © 2016, KEVIN HERRIDGE www.risingsunbnb.com Jazz musicians of the 1920s referred to Algiers as “over da river” or the “Brooklyn of the South,” the latter for its proximity to New Orleans as compared to New York and Brooklyn, both separated by a river. This tour straddles the Algiers Point and Algiers Riverview neighborhoods, both integral parts of historic Algiers, and both having a long, rich history of African American, French, Spanish, German, Irish, and Italian/Sicilian residents. This was the site of the slave holding areas, newly arrived from Africa, and the powder magazine of the early 18th century. John McDONOGH, the richest man in New Orleans, lived here. The earliest account of music on the West Bank is to be found here. The Riverview area contains many African American churches, and some have over one hundred-year histories, one of which was the scene in days gone by of the fiery sermons of “Black Billy Sunday,” and many Jazz funerals, held for musicians, and benevolent society members. Several of the local musicians are interred in the nearby St. Bartholomew, St. Mary, and McDonogh cemeteries. Some of the earliest brass bands that influenced the birth of Jazz, including the Pickwick, the Excelsior, and the Pacific, employed Algiers’ musicians.
