Ball State Football -- 2011 Preseason Prospectus Q & A with Head Football Coach Pete Lembo

Q: How has it been getting to know the student-athletes in the Ball State football program? A: I cannot say enough good things about this group of players. Since our first team meeting Jan. 10, their attitude, work ethic and willingness to buy into everything we have presented to them has been excellent. There have been many changes and they have taken these in stride. They have been a fun group of guys. We need to become more focused and a bit more mature, but that will come in time. These players want to win and are willing to do what it takes to win. They take pride in being .

Q: What are some of the strengths and weaknesses you have seen from your 2011 team? A: I have been pleased with some of the leadership I have seen from the older guys in the program. Leadership is something we emphasize quite a bit. We spend a lot of time talking to the group in meetings about leadership. We want our players to understand how the intangibles impact success on the field. There are some natural leaders in the program and I am hoping they continue to develop once we get out on the practice field this spring. In terms of weaknesses, I was surprised by this team’s lack of strength when we began the off season program. David Feeley, our new strength coach, has done a great job with the group since his arrival in early February. It will take some time to get to an acceptable level, but we are already seeing some significant gains in the major lifts.

Q: How much competition do you expect at different positions this spring? A: I do expect there will be a lot of competition this spring. When you have a new staff and the players have a “clean slate”, there is a natural sense of opportunity. Each player wants to give it his best shot. The true competitors will conduct themselves this way all the time. They are always going to be prepared for when that special opportunity presents itself. We have less depth in some spots than others and that will cut back on some of the competition. I am excited to see how some of the gains we have made in the offseason translate once we step onto the practice field.

Q: What are some of your concerns about the 2011 football team? A: I have a laundry list of concerns about depth at specific positions. It starts up front on both the offensive and defensive lines. Our numbers are far less than you would expect in a program with 85 scholarships. We have to build this depth over time by consistent recruiting and excellent retention. In the short term, we have to be very careful about how we organize our practice sessions throughout the spring. The format of our spring game will be dictated by how healthy we stay in the practices leading up to that day. We have a long term plan that starts off with improving academic success and making a greater ef- fort to redshirt young players. If we can make this happen in the coming years, our depth should improve and we will be able to field more mature players.

Q: How have you been able to address your concerns since your arrival on campus? A: We have addressed some of the concerns in this class, but not all of them. We will need to continue to work to balance our roster and scholarship numbers in future signing classes. I am pleased we signed two tall wide receivers, because we are lacking size at that position. We would like to get to a point where you are not relying on freshmen to contribute right away. The best programs in the Football Bowl Subdivision are playing with redshirt juniors and seniors. Those are the programs winning bowl games and championships. Some freshmen will be ready to contribute right away, but our goal is to get to a point where we are not counting on them as soon as they walk in the door.

Q: What are your thoughts on preparations for the 2011 schedule? A: As we work though our spring practice sessions, the focus will be more internal. We are evaluating the players we have, establishing a preliminary depth chart and trying to put our guys in position to be successful. We will be introducing a new system in all three phases of the game, developing our personnel and introducing situations that occur over the course of a season. Once we get into preseason practice in August, there will still be some internal competition for playing time, but we will gradually shift our focus to the season – specifically the first game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Q: What is your philosophy on the offensive side of the ball? A: We believe strongly in what we do on the offensive side of the ball. We used this system at Lehigh and Elon with great success. It has evolved each year based on the personnel and with different coordinators. Rich Skrosky does an outstanding job preparing our players. We are a no huddle offense, but not a spread offense. That is an important distinction. We use multiple personnel groupings based on our strengths, the opponent and depending on game situations. It’s a flexible offense that is fun to play in and fun to watch. We are known for throwing the football, but we certainly like to run it when the time is right to do so. Our screen game is also an important component of our offensive package.

Q: You have two quarterbacks who have seen significant playing time. How do you see this competition? A. Both quarterbacks will get a significant amount of repetitions in practice. One of the benefits of a limited depth chart at this position is each player will get plenty of work and opportunities to be thoroughly evaluated. Our quarterbacks are terrific kids and are well-respected by the players. They are also in the process of earning the coaches respect. Good, honest competition brings out the best in every player. We will see that at the quarterback position this spring. I hope we have a clear cut starter by the end of April.

Q: What can we expect to see on the defensive side of the ball in 2011? A. Ball State is the fourth institution where Jay Bateman and I have worked together. I have always found that our defenses have played hard for him. He has a fiery personality, but he is also a very bright, detailed coach. Defenses tend to take on the personality of the defensive coordinator. Our guys at Elon and Lehigh enjoyed playing for Jay and I expect that to be the case here as well. We have always been very multiple on defense. We have always been very aggressive when it comes to pressuring the quarterback. But, we have to be careful not to overload our guys with too many schemes too quickly this spring. Good defenses are sound fundamentally. They run to the football, tackle well and cause turnovers. We need to work on the basics everyday.

Q: What is your approach to special teams? A. Just like every other position, we anticipate having some competition at kicker, punter, long snapper and at some of the other specialist positions like holder and returner. Justin Lustig is a very reputable special teams coordinator. Justin is a very knowledgeable and detailed coach, but he can also get you fired up. I also have a very strong special teams background and plan to be involved in this phase of the game. Anytime the head coach is participat- ing actively, it sends a good message to the team. We will dedicate ample practice and meeting time each day on special teams. I hope we can make a difference in this area.

Q: How has the transition gone since accepting the Ball State head coaching position? A. It has been really hectic and really exciting. I have met a lot of terrific people in the community who care a lot about this institution. Like the players, they really want to have a successful football program here. It is my responsibility to develop a long term plan to make it happen and convey that vision to everyone from President Gora right on down the line. We have been working very hard to reach out to all of the different constituents of the program in person, on the phone, through the mail and via e-mail. I appreciate the reception we have received as we go through this busy transition. I miss my fam- ily back in , but at the same time, I have been in the office a lot of late nights. There are many projects I am working on to try to get things in place so we can move forward. I would not be seeing my family a whole lot even if they were here already. We are taking baby steps forward and with each one comes a small sense of satisfaction. Ball State Football -- 2011 Preseason Prospectus Coaching and Support Staff
