Ball State Football -- 2011 Preseason Prospectus Q & A with Head Football Coach Pete Lembo Q: How has it been getting to know the student-athletes in the Ball State football program? A: I cannot say enough good things about this group of players. Since our first team meeting Jan. 10, their attitude, work ethic and willingness to buy into everything we have presented to them has been excellent. There have been many changes and they have taken these in stride. They have been a fun group of guys. We need to become more focused and a bit more mature, but that will come in time. These players want to win and are willing to do what it takes to win. They take pride in being Ball State Cardinals. Q: What are some of the strengths and weaknesses you have seen from your 2011 team? A: I have been pleased with some of the leadership I have seen from the older guys in the program. Leadership is something we emphasize quite a bit. We spend a lot of time talking to the group in meetings about leadership. We want our players to understand how the intangibles impact success on the field. There are some natural leaders in the program and I am hoping they continue to develop once we get out on the practice field this spring. In terms of weaknesses, I was surprised by this team’s lack of strength when we began the off season program. David Feeley, our new strength coach, has done a great job with the group since his arrival in early February. It will take some time to get to an acceptable level, but we are already seeing some significant gains in the major lifts. Q: How much competition do you expect at different positions this spring? A: I do expect there will be a lot of competition this spring. When you have a new staff and the players have a “clean slate”, there is a natural sense of opportunity. Each player wants to give it his best shot. The true competitors will conduct themselves this way all the time. They are always going to be prepared for when that special opportunity presents itself.
