CRICKET AS a CAREER Sports Used to Occupy a Back Seat to Studies CRICKET AS A CAREER Sports used to occupy a back seat to studies and in terms of preferences as a career or money making option. When we used to indulge in sports activities in our childhood, it had to be restrictive and selective. No parents would have ever allowed their kids to play sports neglecting studies. The parents would rather love to see their children as an IAS Officers, Doctors or an Engineer. In a state where football was the prime sport, no-one would ever think of playing Cricket. For that matter even in mainland India, Cricket was not as popular as it is now. Indian cricketers were emerging in the National horizon due to sheer talent or may be influence of being so and so of former cricketers/officials of National repute. The talented guys had to toil hard to meet both ends without any support, parents’ wrath and the risk of neglecting studies. In comparison with two decades back, today the ever growing popularity of cricket in India has changed the scenario completely, Cricket is being pursued as a career. We all know that a cricket player’s career is limited, but within that span of his career, he can earn money which an I.A.S Officer, a Doctor or an Engineer cannot think of during his lifetime. The follow up like the star tag, the glamour always adds to subsequent guaranteed engagements which may be in advertisements, endorsements, politics and even in Bollywood. Besides, the money generated by a cricketer during his limited career will be more than enough to venture into business propositions as a next career option. It is of no surprise that cricket fever with the youngsters in the state of Sikkim has increased in recent times. We must understand that playing for the State team one can earn in lakhs. Even after the end of his/her career as a player, one can continue to pursue his/her passion by going into the line of coaching or training. In the times when we have a lot of educated youths coming out of colleges and so few job offer/option in the State, one could definitely give a thought to the possible income any cricket aspirant can earn if he gets to wear the state jersey and of course, If you have talent, passion and luck by your side, maybe you can also be a part of the Indian National Team. Presently Sikkim Represents in the following National Level Tournaments. 1. Senior Men’s Category: a. Ranji Trophy (Multi Day). b. Vijay Hazare Trophy (One Day). c. Syed Mustaq Ali (T20). 2. • Cobbling Together the Dream Indian Eleven
COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

Much like the UN, the ICC brings representatives from all cricket-playing countries together to make administrative decisions about the future of cricket. Unlike the UN, however, not all countries have an equal input; the ICC decides which members are worthy of “Test” status (Full Members), and which are not (Associate Members). While the Council has experienced many successes, including hosting the prestigious World Cup and promoting cricket at a grassroots level, it also continues to receive its fair share of criticism, predominantly regarding the ICC’s perceived obstruction of the growth of the game within non- traditionally cricketing nations and prioritizing the commercialization of the sport over globalizing it.
