7 THE BIG NEWS The press conference definitely ended on a high note, as Frank Hoffmann announced that RTL Television signed a broadcasting rights deal for football qualification matches featuring the German national team. The deal runs from September 2014 through to October 2017 and will include all the German qualification matches for the 2016 European football championship, also known as the “Euro”, and the 2018 World Cup. It is the first time that RTL Television will air football matches involving the German national team in more than 20 years. It states that while VOD excels Escape: the desire to be at satisfying the personal states of TV watching – specifi cally indulging taken on an enjoyable journey and escaping – it is less equipped for the more social needs such as to another time and place unwinding, experience or seeking comfort. This is supported by the Indulge: satisfying your fi nding that for 54 per cent of the occasions we watch live TV we’re (typically guilty) pleasures with someone else, compared to 30 per cent for VOD. Neil Mortensen, Research and Planning Director, Thinkbox: “This research gets to the heart of why we watch TV and explains the apparent conundrum of why people choose to watch so much live TV when they don’t have to. It shows that VOD is a brilliant and treasured new way to enjoy TV, but it can’t give people everything they demand from TV – particularly the highly valued social elements. Live TV is best equipped to meet all of the needs and that is why it will endure, no matter what new platforms emerge. Live TV is our daily food, whereas VOD is more like a box of chocolates.” 10 BIG RTL THRILL NOW AVAILABLE ON DISH TV Big RTL Thrill
