Producers ~ Unbound Productions: Paul Millet, Je G. Rack, and Jonathan Josephson A Note From Unbound Productions Welcome to another fun and horror-lled evening of Wicked Lit! We are thrilled to return to Mountain View Mausoleum & Cemetery for the 8th time, and our 9th annual production. Since founding Unbound Productions in 2008, our company has grown from an annual Halloween event to a year-round theatre company with a thriving Membership base and an ever-expanding group of phenomenal artists. Those of you who were able to join us for A Night at the Colony in April, our rst annual First Stab Festival at the Pasadena Central Library in June and our inaugural Mystery Lit production at the Los Angeles County Arboretum have been able to enjoy the fruits of this growth.

In addition to enhancing our technical capabilities (and we’ve got a number of surprises in store for you tonight!) we are excited to have been able to invite several new creatives into the fold. Playwright Kirsten Brandt rst brought her adaptation of Margaret Oliphant’s The Open Door to us in 2015 and we were excited to present it as a staged reading as a part of Wicked Lit at the Huntington that fall. With its inclusion in Wicked Lit 2017, Kirsten’s piece becomes the 34th world premiere play in the history of Unbound Productions. This year’s frame was also written by a new playwright to Unbound, the very talented Kerry Kazmierowicztrimm, who also penned the adaptation of Teig O’Kane and the Corpse which debuted as a staged reading at our spring fundraiser. We are also so very pleased to welcome Sebastian Muñoz and James Castle Stevens, longtime friends of our company, as they make their Wicked Lit debuts directing The Damned Thing and Liliom respectively. We’re also so very happy to welcome Darin Anthony back to Wicked Lit as the director of Thoth’s Labyrinth.

All in all, between the fresh artistic voices and our growing education program, it’s been a tremendous year for our company. Thank you for taking the ride along with us!

Enjoy the show, Paul Millet, Jonathan Josephson, Je G. Rack WL-2 Production History

WL-16 Peopling Purgatory a note from Kerry Kazmierowicztrimm, playwright/adaptor of Liliom

Last year was my rst time seeing Wicked Lit. I thought the whole evening was incredibly original and wonderfully exciting, and, because of its structure, would provide unique challenges that were exciting to me as a writer. In particular, the frame seemed like it would be fun to write because it required nding a way to engage the audience while still serving the primary function of the frame: an opportunity for the audience to have a breather before the next rotation of plays. That’s when I came up with the idea of setting the frame in a form of Purgatory – a place where people are forced to wait (personally, I nd few things as stressful as waiting). Once I’d decided on Purgatory, I looked at several literary classics about that world, including a play that was adapted into one of my favorite musicals, – the 1909 play Liliom by Ferenc Molnar.

I also knew that I wanted to populate the world with characters from di erent short stories, the common theme between the stories that I’d choose being that the characters all did something horrible, but convince themselves that what they did was justied. That’s how I landed on the short stories “An Alpine Divorce” by Robert Barr; “A Horseman in the Sky” by Ambrose Bierce; and “The Vendetta” and “The Diary of a Madman,” both by Guy de Maupassant. I thank the Wicked Lit team for all their support and enthusiasm for this concept. Searching the Highlands a note from Kirsten Brandt, playwright/adaptor of The Open Door

I came across Mrs. Margaret Oliphant’s work by chance. With a curiosity for women overlooked by history and literature departments, I began a search that led me to this prolic Scottish writer. With over 120 works (novels, short ction, travel journals and histories), Mrs. Oliphant was one of the most popular writers of the Victorian Era. I wanted to bring her artistry to the attention of contemporary audiences in my e ort to focus on those forgotten women. The Open Door is considered one of her best short stories, and it is chilling. I was instantly attracted to the debate between the believer and the skeptic of the supernatural; as well as parent-child dynamics that infuse the story. I’m a fan of a good scare – but when it focuses on a child in jeopardy my anxieties increase and my sense of urgency matches the characters. I knew I had to adapt this work.

I tailored the adaptation to t in the immersive site-specic aesthetic of Wicked Lit and have relished the support to continue to shape the piece with the company. Oliphant’s story is completely told from Henry Mortimer’s point of view. Working with director Paul Millet, I shifted the story away from the narrative voice and found a way to bring multiple voices into focus to increase the tensions of the play adaptation. I am thrilled to have this play as part of Wicked Lit!

WL-17 Too Late To Turn Back Now a note from Jonathan Josephson, Thoth’s Labyrinth playwright

This is the 14th piece that I’ve written for Unbound Productions but the rst where I found the source material only after having decided on the type of play I wanted to write. I had the idea of transforming Mountain View into a labyrinth with twists and turns and magic and danger and I just couldn’t shake it. Also, I have enjoyed broadening my own personal horizons by reading more and more non-American, non-European short stories, myths and legends and I had set my focus on nding something dramatic and dismal to adapt from the Middle East. While I didn’t nd a traditional “story” to serve as the basis for a play, I found inspiration for an adventure from two unique sources: a multi-millennia-old legend and a fascinating archaeological discovery.

“The Book of Thoth” is a tragic, cautionary tale. It tells the story of a great Prince of the Old Kingdom who seeks power beyond the mortal plane, and the darkness that overtakes him after grasping beyond his station and tampering with the gods. The legend is laced with irony and becomes truly resonant when the fate of the prince’s family comes into play. The second element that inspired this piece is the fact that there really were (and are) giant labyrinths in Egypt said to be “larger than the pyramid at Giza.” I came across the Mataha Exhibition at Hawara in 2008 which utilized archaeological geophysics to locate an enormous underground temple. The labyrinth had been buried by the relentless sands of the Fayyum Oasis - and buried it remains. Scientists are concerned that environmental changes from the past 2,500 would harm the structure if it were to be excavated so there are no plans to uncover the labyrinth from the sand. Humanity may never know what specic treasures were buried in the labyrinth, perhaps we were not meant to know. But at least we know its there!

In closing I want to give special thanks to two very special directors: Bruce Gray for getting me started on this adventure with some great ideas and keen insights, and Darin Anthony for helping me realize this vision with tremendous skill (and patience). This play has been a challenge and a joy to write, I do hope you enjoy your travels! The Play’s The Damned Thing a note from Je G. Rack, playwright/adaptor of The Damned Thing

The title was what rst drew me to “The Damned Thing“ by Ambrose Bierce. Horror titles don’t get much better than that. What is it and why was it damned? The exploration of realms outside of our own limited human senses has always fascinated me, as well as the moments when unknown realms bleed into our own familiar world. I also responded to Bierce’s dark humor mixed with science and just plain creepiness and I wanted to play and expand upon that fun cocktail. I wanted to know more about the deceased character, Hugh Morgan, and as I wrote, I soon found out that Hugh had quite a bit more to say. Once Hugh came alive, my adaptation truly took on a life of its own. While the bones, or essence of Bierce’s story are intact, I’ve added di erent skin and a personal viewpoint to explore some of the questions he raised. In the end, I hope you enjoy The Damned Thing.
