The German Heritage Society of Greater Washington, D.C. , founded in 1984, was the outgrowth of an ad hoc committee, The Greater Washington, D.C. German Heritage Society, which was organized for the tricentennial of German immigration to America in 1983. The purpose of the Society, incorporated as a non-profit organization, is to educate the people of Washington about the historical, cultural and economic influence of the German-Americans in this area. It also encourages research and preservation of related archival material. In 1998, the name was changed to the German-American Heritage Society of Greater Washington, D.C.

The Society has collected information about German-American organizations, people, businesses and other related history in the Washington, D.C. area as well as some general material on immigration to the U.S. and a small amount on Germany itself. The Society has formed a partnership with the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. to encourage individuals, businesses and other organizations, such as churches and cultural groups, to donate their archives to the German-American Collection of the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.

The German-American Heritage Society members research the history of Germans in Washington, D.C. and nearby areas and sponsor events and lectures to enlighten the public about German-American contributions to the D.C., and area.
