A familiar sight to most of you, Club Chairman Doug Pollock is standing down from the role this coming season, after many years service to the Club in various positions. Premier player, Premier Coach (one of a few qualified Level 3 coaches around ), Committee member and Club Chairman. We all appreciate his commitment, his mentoring and his straight-shooting demeanour. His catch cry at many Club end of season functions – “when the Chairman drinks – everybody drinks” was extremely popular, and now that he’s run out of money as a result, he’s had to call it quits!!!!

Seriously though, we are thankful for Doug’s guidance and dedication. We will no doubt continue to see him around the Club from time to time to share a joke and a beer or three!!

4 Marty Brooky – Convenor of the Junior Club after many years has decided to stand down at the end of the 2016/17 season. His own boys have moved on and Marty has decided it’s time to hand over the reins.

Brian Gardner and Paul Bracewell will assume the role of Joint Convenors from the new season.

I must thank Marty for the time and effort that he has put in over the years. Anyone who devotes countless hours and bucket loads of energy to what can be a thankless task at times, deserves heaps of praise and lots of pats on the back. It speaks volumes that it will take two guys to replace Marty for the season ahead.

Good luck Marty – we’ll no doubt see you around the traps, keeping up your cricketing interests and club support.

18 ANKUR BASSI - SENIOR PLAYER, COACH

Ankur has been making the trip from his home in India to the Mighty Easts Cricket Club in Wellington since 2012. He has fitted into the Club culture here well and has become a popular member of the Premier squad and a personable coach and mentor. He has also been known to knock up a very tasty curry for some of the boys to enjoy!

Ankur has previously played First Class cricket in India, has played in the Essex League, and was a member of the Rajasthan Royals IPL wider training squad.

He has undertaken a serious coaching role within the Club, both within the Junior ranks and with more senior players seeking individual coaching and tuition. He holds a Qualified Level 2 Coaching accreditation and is building a good reputation in this area.

19 Ankur is available to take on new coaching roles within the Club, both at Senior and Junior levels. Seek him out if you want to engage Ankur for one-on-one, groups, or team coaching.

27 Club Manager’s Season Report 2016-17 by Gordon Dry ------

It was a lousy summer weatherwise – one of the worst in living memory – rain, rain and more rain. It reflected in the performance milestones shown earlier in this report, where only 28 centuries were scored across the whole club, against 57 scored in the season before. We can lay the blame on frequent match disruptions and wet wickets generally not conducive to free scoring . But in terms of results, there were some outstanding achievements.

First and foremost, the Premiers brilliantly winning the National Club Championship in Auckland, to score back to back victories in this most prestigious tournament. The Champion club team in New Zealand has a tremendous ring to it!! The Premiers also returned the Pearce Cup to its rightful home, thrashing the hapless Karori side in a convincing display in the final at the . Our 14th Premier success in the last 16 seasons!! Superb!! On top of that, there were achievements galore at awards ceremonies -

28 Awards for Grade Winners

Intercity 1 Day Div 2 - Easts Masters T20 Grade, Division 3 – Easts Stags Premier 2 Womens T20 - Easts Wildcats

Winning three other grades was good but a little below the level we were hoping for. Recording four seconds and four thirds was a bit irritating. We’ll want to focus on lifting those outcomes next season to get more teams into the winner’s circle!

There were other tremendous individual and team highlights too.- • The One Day Masters team winning their grade again. In only their second season with the Club, they have won their Division both times. • An extraordinary season for 19 year old Jack Anderson, who was awarded Player of the Year. He spent a good part of the season at university in Otago, but when he was here he still managed two seven bags, a five wicket bag and a four wicket bag. Good stuff Jack! (There’s a lot of potential here!) • New team to the Club this season, the Stags, won their grade first crack, and will be looking to build further on that in the seasons ahead.

Off the field, the Club ran pretty smoothly. The Clubrooms and bar were reasonably well patronised during the season, but could be improved. We perhaps need to explore more inventive ways to attract teams back to the Club after their game on a Saturday. (Work in progress!!) The end of season prizegiving function was a success with the bar almost cleaned out and as a result the takings were pretty solid. The Club’s financial results for the year were satisfactory, whilst the bar recorded a small deficit on operations for the season.

Big thankyou’s for huge contributions – • to Sean Joseph whose work as Manager of the Premier team is always impressive and he continues to cook up a storm as Chef extraordinaire!. • To Pat & Jane Baker for their wonderful sponsorship support.

29 • To Chairman Doug Pollock who continued his good chairmanship in his usual quiet and inconspicuous way • Terrific work by Club President Ronnie Nathu who has been outstanding in pushing the Club’s barrow and promoting the campaign for new Clubrooms. • to Bernz Golder, our Webmaster/Statistician/Photographer all rolled into one. Again, great work Bernz ! • to Cath Shields – the Club’s official Premier scorer and back up Chef - always prepared to step up. Well done Cath!! • to all the captains and team organisers for fronting up and carrying the clubs banner throughout the season. Good one!

I must also make special mention of long serving Junior Club Convenor Marty Brooky. Marty retired from the position at the end of the season after many years service to junior cricket. Anyone who puts in the time and the effort like Marty has, deserves a lot of credit. We’ll no doubt see Marty around the traps in the seasons ahead.

We look forward to the 2017-18 season with confidence. The Club has fashioned a fantastic record over the years, but we’re not going to rest on our laurels – it’s onward and upward.

I expect to see you all back on deck – and bring all your mates with you, so that they too can experience first- hand the phenomenon that is the Mighty Easts!

31 Premier Mens team Season Report 2016-17 by Gordon Dry ------

The Thesaurus has taken a fair hammering as I searched for new superlatives to describe the Premier’s latest season achievements – words that haven’t been used time and again over the years to completely capture this teams remarkable successes. Superb, outstanding, extraordinary, terrific are all words that have been trotted out with monotonous regularity. Members have come to expect monumental achievements by these guys. The 2016-17 season was no exception! It was a cracker!! Bringing back home the Pearce Cup, symbol of Premier supremacy in Wellington club cricket, and then the crowning glory of the season - the back to back winning of the National Club Cricket Championship in Auckland (see separate report on pages 35-36).

The Pearce Cup win was a typically solid effort throughout the round robin phase, and the final against the old foe Karori at the Basin Reserve was a clear demonstration of the dominance of our guys. A resounding six wicket win with plenty of time to spare and the 14th Pearce Cup victory in the last 16 years was well and truly in the bag!!

I must also mention the One Day final at home at Kilbirnie against our perennial whipping boys Karori. Rolling them for 146 and then cruising through to victory with 7 wickets in hand and with 18 overs still to bat. This resounding success meant another trip to Auckland at the end of the season to defend our National Club Championship title! The rest is history with the boys dominating from the word go and convincingly bringing home the bacon!!

Some highlights of the local Premier season – • Youngster Jack Anderson’s 7-32 against Collegians was a stand- out performance and demonstrates the potential that this guy has. We look forward to many more wickets from Jack in the seasons ahead. • Peter Connell’s 42 wickets for the season topped the aggregates in Wellington Premier cricket in 2016/17. He had a stellar season and bowled with sustained accuracy and aggression.

32 • South African import James Price looks a very good acquisition. A sound and well organised batsman who hits the ball hard and has the game to score bulk runs at this level. He recorded the top aggregate for the team of 544 runs, despite missing several games.

• Jamie Gibson’s all round excellence was again impressive particularly at the NCCC in Auckland. Jamie also took the team MVP award . • Lance Dry’s astute captaincy was again a feature and this was recognised with a Norwood Award at the Cricket Wellington end of season awards.

As we look ahead to the 2017/18 season I believe it’s important to keep a focus on the standards the team has built up over a number of years and which we need to be vigilant in maintaining over the seasons ahead. Rumour has it that a certain other Club has booked the indoor facility from 1st July in an effort to lift their game to the required level. They have obviously decided that they have not been training hard enough!!! Good luck with that – we’ll carry on doing our own thing and continue what has suited us admirably over many seasons!!

34 th th National Club Cricket Championship 4 to 9 April 2017 - By Gordan Dry

It’s bloody marvellous!!! A spectacularly outstanding season was capped off by the Premiers by achieving a repeat of the National Club Cricket Championship victory of last year. Back to back national champs – a tremendous effort that clearly demonstrated the team’s status as the top club side in New Zealand. The success was .accomplished in convincing fashion – winning every game pretty comfortably. The final against the Otago team Albion was a resounding victory knocked off by 6 wickets with 7 overs still in hand.

Everyone in the team did their bit during the tournament but we must mention the outstanding Jamie Gibson’s allround contributions. Jamie loves this tournament – he seems to grow another leg when the NCCC at Cornwall Park gets underway! Jamie received the award for Player of the Tournament, for the third time in a row!

I’m very proud of the boys for their commitment and skilful application. Also, a big shout out to all of the support team - Managers Sean & Sarah Joseph, scorer Cath Shields, and sponsors Pat & Jane Baker. I must also mention the enthusiastic supporters on the sidelines in Auckland in Richard and Sarah Gibson & Hanna, Graham and Diane Ansell & Conor, Joe Fullerton-Smith, Fazil Khan, Phillipa Kibblewhite and Mia, Paul Hitchcock, Michael Burns, Hamish Grey, Josh Allan, BJ Barnett, Josh McLauchlan, Sam McLauchlan, and Robyn, Georgia, Maddy & Oscar Dry.

I would like to think that we can get back up north for many seasons to come and chalk up a few more national championship victories for the Club. That’s the plan!!!

36 Premier Reserves team season report 2016-17 by Gordon Dry ------

It was a season of rebuilding for the Reserves, having lost a large number of experienced players in the last couple of seasons, for various reasons. Missing from the lineup this year were Sean Neal, Sam Shukla, Anup Sebastian, Patrick Phillips, Jamie O’Donnell, Matt van Kesteren, Nathan Cameron, Brad Coleman, Rob Sewell, Josh Stuart – that’s almost a full team!! We introduced a lot of new, young, enthusiastic lads, upon which the team will be built in the seasons ahead. With the normal amount of development some of those youngsters will progress to the Premiers!!

A fined down Haseeb Quazi took over the captaincy with Ankur Bassi and Vena Niutao as his most experienced off-siders. Unfortunately, illness and injury befell Haseeb and the captain’s band was taken up by Tom Gibson, Mitch Edwards and Mitch Hammond, on various occasions.

The young team was still very competitive and posted some good wins during the season. They finished third out of the 12 teams, which was a meritorious performance and will be built on in the seasons ahead.

The youngsters who will carry this team to bigger and brighter things include Matt Ansell, Jack Anderson, Krishna Patel, Kaleb Gilhooly, Jack Hansen, Jed Wiggins, Luke Georgeson, Jack Jacobs, Zach McIntyre- Reet, Dylan Sharma, Mitch Hammond, Hamish Johns. This is a very strong group – some of these guys have already played Premiers and will likely secure full time positions in the top team in quick time.

On top of this, we can look to solid support from experienced cricketers like Ankur Bassi, Sean Neal, Haseeb Quazi, Vena Niutao, Mitch Edwards – and I’m very hopeful about the possibility of returning stalwarts like Sam Shukla, Jamie O’Donnell, Nathan Cameron.

There were some standout performances during the 2016/17 season that warrant special mention here – • A maiden Club for Krishna Patel, who also topped the

37 team aggregates with 458 runs. An excellent season for Krishna. • Jack Anderson posted a second 7 for (after one for the Premiers). Remarkably, this 7-39 was also against Collegians at Anderson Park! • A fine 6-28 for young off-spinner Jed Wiggins. Straight out of St Pats Town, Jed looks a good prospect for the future of the Club. • Good to see Sean Neal back in the fold late in the season. He finished off on a high note with a typically swashbuckling 121 . • The itinerant Pom – Sam Burdock batted well and kept wickets tidily whilst he was on deck. He disappeared off the scene late in the piece.

There is no good reason why the Reserves can’t bounce back next season and return to the top of the table. We have some good young players in the group and some more on the horizon. I believe we can get together a good blend of youth and experience that can put us back in the forefront of the competition where we belong.

Let’s all get together and make that our goal in 2017/18.

39 First Grade Roosters team season report 2016/17 by The 12th Man ------

While the record might suggest the Roosters endured a muddling mid- table season, this was no ordinary summer. For some unfathomable reason, Easts' most lovable delinquents got the 1-day yips and for the first time in their history failed to win a single 50-over match. The bowlers could not be faulted, with the Silver Bullet and curly Jim putting in some stellar spells, complemented by the spinners Gardner, Doc and Dey, to routinely knock sides over for under 180. The batting, however, was as woeful as the weather. There was some very special chokes to be witnessed, most notably against Hutt, the table-topping Indians and arch nemesis Cougars.

It goes without saying that the Roosters found themselves well and truly rooted at the foot of the 1-day table, though they took some solace in the fact that the Lankans were down there with them. Quite a fall from grace given they were the two sides contesting the final last season. But while the Lankans entire season got bogged down, the Roosters found their feet in the 2-dayers and ended up topping the table going unbeaten. They could have staged a remarkable turnaround to challenge for the grade title had it not been for the weather, which ruined any chance of going for outright victories against Eastbourne, Collegians, the Cougars and Indians.

The 2-day run featured some remarkable performances. Brownie kicked it off when he took Hutt apart, smoking a Roosters' record 168no including 5 consecutive sixes off the loopy left arm skipper Rupert - it should have been six but a thigh high full toss on the last ball got to the boundary rider on the bounce. His innings included a quality 85 run partnership with Shaddy - who didn't contribute a single run and now holds the Roosters' record for the greatest ever duck. Brownie's record ton, which surpassed the Belv's 160 set in 2011, only stood for one game, as Big Bird Stuart stole his glory by dismantling Eastbourne on their postage stamp ground to rack up 188.

40 While there were numerous highlights during the back-end of the season, including the Skip and Winter derailing Wainui when they thought they had first innings points in the bag, the most memorable of all was a stellar sunny day on Kilbirnie No.1 against the Cougars. Batting first on a green top Doc and Squid set about bullying their over-confident opponents into submission, cruising to a 110-run opening stand in 20 overs. While both fell shortly after, the Belv and Big Bird took the score past 200 and the platform was set. The Cougars did well only to concede 324 from there, and they have Big Bird to thank for that as he succumbed to the most bizarre dismissal ever witnessed in cricket. Sitting pretty at lunch on 80, he walked back out and shortly after the resumption got a slow short ball that he sought to deposit on the club roof. Not only did he miss it, but he then heard the rattle of his stumps. The culprit? His iPhone. The mug had walked back to the crease with it in his pocket and as he spun on the crease it slipped out and clipped his leg stump. The Cougars were talking a big game at the innings change, claiming it was a 400 pitch. It might have been, but not for them. They only had 27 overs in the day, and couldn't survive them as the Bullet and Jim knocked the top off and then Shaddy came on to shred their undies taking 6/15, including a screaming one-hander at gully from Doc that had him puffing his chest arms spread wide like so many of the 80s wrestlers he spends his weekends watching on VHS. The Cougars would have followed on 240 runs behind had the weather not killed that game as well. But that one stunner Kilbirnie day alone made up for every other poor day during the season. Man did the beers taste like nectar that evening....

42 First Grade Cougars team season report 2016-17 by Locky Donnelly ------

The winds of change swept through the Cougars, as another season dawned upon them. Though old faces remained, youth and new additions looked to bolster the squad’s disappointment of the previous year. Being usual slow starters in the grade, the weather was a major factor in dusting off the cobwebs from the off season. The first six rounds rain interrupted, allowing any early season slip ups to go without punishment.

A stand in skipper steadied the ship, in the absence of the usual brains of the operation. Andrew Peden staking his claim to (C) saw a much needed new attacking brand of cricket flow through the Cougars, notching up crucial One day wins over Wainui, and the woeful Roosters, the latter a soul destroying game that proved the Cougars were to lead the charge for Easts in the first grade comp. This set up a semi final show down with Hutt Districts. The Cougars did not purr. Slumping out of the one day comp in disastrous fashion, losing by a single run after a steady start which saw them cruising to victory.

Alas, the two day games remained crucial in the race for the title. The Roosters came for revenge in the much anticipated two day clash on Kilbirnie #1 but the gods favoured the Cougars denying the Roosters bragging rights by raining after a dismal first day. The race for the title for the Cougars eventually fell short, let down by the top six and a lack of runs. Guy Bidwell the only Cougar to steadily score runs in all situations, he notched his way to leading run scorer, edging skipper Lachlan Donnelly in a great season with the bat. Zach McIntyre-Reet notched up his first century for the Cougars, a special moment for the young man destined for higher honours. Though the break through of the season was spin bowler Jed Wiggins, he dazzled selectors with his performances in the Cougars, which saw him go all the way to the national club championship with the Premier men's team. A marvellous achievement from this year’s Cougar of the year.

However moment of the season goes to Matt Currill, after a 4 hour wait in

43 pads to take the crease, parents watching on.. A dubious leave first ball saw his middle stump dislodged, etching his name into Cougar history, and claiming the mantle of moment of the year. A great season, full of great memories. Thanks to all who participated.

44 2nd Grade Bullets team season report 2016/17 by Shaun Raumati ------12 Games played: 4 Wins, 3 Losses, 5 Draws

The 2016/17 Bullets will be remembered as the season that got away, in more ways than one.

The team was spearheaded by a strong bowling line-up that was able to take wickets early and put pressure on teams that could not play the moving ball. The wickets were shared across the whole team as bowlers took advantage of favourable conditions. The bowling was backed up with some fine batting, with a number of batters reaching half centuries.

However, it was difficult for the team to get consistent performances week in week out. Rain played a huge role in that. Of the 15 scheduled games this season, three were abandoned and five were affected by rain, which lead to a number a draws, and a number of lost opportunities to get runs and wickets.

With that being said, the team fought hard and had some great results. The highlight of the season was our 78 run win over Northern Park. Losing the toss and setting 226 to win, the bowlers restricted the batting side to only one boundary (coming from the no.11), bowling them out and securing a place in the one-day final.

The biggest disappointment would have to be not winning the one-day final. The one-day final saw us lose the toss and set the Sikhs 229 for the win. While everyone gave it their all, we came up short, losing by 2 wickets.

The two-day competition also got away from us. We probably needed a few more of those draws to lead to wins to have really put ourselves in contention. The game that will stick out as a “what if” would have been the two-dayer against Northern Park. It’s hard winning cricket games with only eight players, but the boys fought hard and were able to fight out a draw. I have no doubt that if we had a full team, we would have won that game.

45 There was some standout bowling performances throughout the season: Mark Hambleton (5-20 v Johnsonville, one-dayer), Umesh Govind (6-27 v Johnsonville, two, dayer), Charan Sandhu (5-38, v Sikhs, two-dayer), and Ahmad Khan (8-41 & 5-38 Indian Sports, 2-day). There were also some solid knocks from the batters: Gurpreet Singh (55, 53, 64, 62), Tom Barlow (67), Charan Sandhu (54).

The Bullets also had a number of players show great potential for the future. Ones to watch in 2017/18 include: • Amit Kumar: Bowling all-rounder who has the potential to get a lot of wickets and runs next season. • Sasikumar Dilakshan: Batter who can play all the shots, just needed more time at the crease. • Alex Lowcay: All-rounder who has great potential to be a top four batter and bowler in any team he plays; still at High School. • Tom Kibblewhite: Left arm spinner who grew as the season progressed. Also showed he can bat at the top of the order. • Jagnesh Makwana: Hopefully is injury free next season, can open the batting and bowling if required.

A final shout out to Jonny Sutton and Karl Grove; turning up week in week out, even when injured. That’s what Bullets cricket is all about. To all the players who played for the Bullets in 2016/17, thanks for playing and look forward to next season.

47 3rd Grade Super Challengers team season report 2016-17 by Karthik Ullas ------It gives me great pleasure to report on the vast improvements our team has made considering the fact that we had a fairly new team this season. In 2016/17, the East Super Challengers finished 1st In One Day competition and 5th in Two day competition in Cricket Wellington Third Grade amongst 9 teams. This year we have fittingly progressed to a very respectable 1st out of the 9 teams in One day competition for the first time ever. This clear and commendable advancement is the result of the commitment, dedication and diligence of team-management, as well as the willingness of each and every team member to work hard throughout the year.

Last year, the Challengers made a conscious decision to create a new team structure, ethos and atmosphere, headed by the principles and values of the game. Since then, the team as a whole has continued to strive for these goals and skills both on and off the field. Accordingly, credit goes to Loyis (the pinch hitter), Sahib (who joined us half way through the season), Jacob (as usual, Mr. Dependable in the bowling department), who have outperformed and been role models for the rest of the team. We are glad to introduce some young talents to our line-up. Jithu, Jibin, Alwin, Sebin and Anand are the new finds of the season.

It has been a pleasure to captain these wonderful talents. Devan helped me with the challenge of captaincy and helped the team with his experience.

As proven on several occasions this season, the Super Challengers certainly knew how to win in high-pressure games but simply lacked the overall strength and experience to overcome the biggest teams in the league in crucial matches. Nevertheless, it was a laudable season result for the team that has worked hard to notch up their wins and is constantly striving to produce better and more consistent performances. Although several young squad members are beginning to shine and have made significant improvements and advances over the course of the season, it goes without saying that they should not rest on their laurels

48 but should be inspired to work even harder during the off season to ensure that they are even better prepared for the new season, and are able to step up and start becoming match-winners on their own.

We very much look forward to the 2017-18 cricket season, which should have many exciting prospects. Our season stats will give a good indication of the top performers for us. Almost every team in the club now knows Loyis Edwin and The Super Challengers. It is good to be recognized out there. A big thank you to my team for the effort and time they have put in for the season.

I would like to thank Gordie and the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club for giving us the opportunity.

No report or stats received from Smoking Pineapples!

In their first crack at 3rd Grade, the Smoking Pineapples had a mixed season with some good wins and a few losses thrown in. They finished 6th on the points table, but are probably better than that outcome might suggest. With that experience under their belt, I suspect they will come back next season somewhat stronger, and with a better feel for what’s required in 3rd Grade.

Roshan Rai, Nick Lunn and Tim Banks were the main run scorers, while in the bowling department Kerryn Friday got a hatful of wickets, ably assisted by Nick Lunn, Tim Banks, Nathan Kirikino and Justin Maxwell. Skipper, Luciano Colucci, a prolific runscorer in recent years, had a season to forget and will be looking to get things back on track in the new season.

51 4th Grade Aces team season report 2016-17 by Joe Drysdale ------

In a thrilling last day of the season, the Aces were able to turn a first innings deficit into a quality win at Wainui. A great opening spell from Krishan Kumar and Babrak Rasool had the Wainui lads at 21 for 4 at drinks, and skittled soon after. Later in the day chasing a 150 total in around 30 overs James Birt turned it on with a 64* to take us home, with support from Rob Bromley and Babrak Rasool. It was a fitting end to another good season where the Aces lost but one game (in the 1 day comp) and were unfortunate to finish 2nd in both competitions.

The 16-17 season saw the addition of one Franco Natoli, an instant fan (player) favourite and stalwart at the top of the order. Franco’s taking of the gloves towards the end of the season was also a revelation that allowed top batsman Rob Bromley a chance to rest that back and pursue top run scorer as well as scoring his maiden century..

Darren Ward (a version 1.0 Ace) had a fantastic season which saw him top the wicket taking with 24 and back it up with a batting average of 44 – this combination of batting and bowling prowess made him our undisputed man of the season, something that was not lost on the other Phu Thai patrons at the Ace’s end of season dinner.

The weather and regular player unavailability made 16-17 a slightly disjointed affair for the Aces but led once again by ‘el capitano’ Casey Greive - when the Aces were good we were often unstoppable – a Jim Birt screamer on the boundary at Waiwhetu adding insult to injury in an innings thrashing of the Axemen, could have been the result of divine intervention. It certainly wasn’t down to Jim’s less than regular appearances at trainings. It was another great year of enjoyable memories with a team that will be back again in 17-18 with a desire to win and a new found urgency to pay subs on time.

A big thanks to Gordie, for putting up with us again and hats off for his well deserved Outstanding Contribution to Cricket award.

4th Grade The Bats team season report 2016-2017 by Rhys Stannard ------

Well although the weather never turned up to the party the Bats certainly did in a big way. In the sodden exchanges that surprisingly weren't cancelled we brought the Bulldogs to heel, slayed the Sri Lankans, trumped the Aces, ground the Axemen, castrated the Hawks, back- stabbed the Bandits, sent the Indian Seniors to the Indian Senior Retirement Home and got thoroughly destroyed by the Chinamen. We saw our share of centurions and 5-fers, innumerable screaming catches and the odd unprovoked beamer. We clashed against friend and foe but never with each other and we all had a good deal of fun every game.

Hats off to Isaiah Wilson for steaming in every Saturday, taking 39 wickets in spite of the protests of his dodgy knee and the pleas and sobs of the batter on strike. Hats off also to Felix Faisandier who joined our team this year and unleashed the most outstanding batting I have ever witnessed on the field in my life. Thank god he paid those subs. Hats off also to Mike Keogh most improved player this season. In his first season as a batter we sent him in as an opener and he stood up to score 360 runs at an average of 25.71 often providing a solid opening partnership alongside the smooth manuka man Nick Honey. Hats off also to Gabriel and Jack for tirelessly trudging in with their lethal dibbly-dobblies, that corridor never looked less certain. And to Jason Foote and Paul Mathews who often came together in the field to provide a run-out, or to surreptitiously play a match winning innings without raising a sweat. And of course Sloane was there too, laughing and joking, frosted lips gathered together in an angelic halo.

Next season we’ll be looking to retrieve all our hats and we hope the sun comes to the party!!

55 4th Grade Bulldogs team season report 2016-17 by Dave Corry ------

The Bulldogs had a moderately successful season finishing towards the top of the bottom half of the table, this was built around winning first innings points then snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The team built on some of the successes of last season, although there was admittedly a lack of cohesion due to lack of availability of players and adverse weather conditions (I thought saying this report was cancelled due to weather would be an appropriate way to sum up the season).

The highlight of the season was grabbing first innings points against club rivals, the Eastern Suburbs Bats. The foundations were laid early off the back of an unbeaten 87 from Patrick Arnold as well as 56 from Marty Powell (also unbeaten). Whilst we were able to form partnerships with the bat, unfortunately we weren’t able to do the same in the bowling department. Constant rotation meant that bowlers were unable to get used to bowling in tandem. That said, Kuntal Patel stood out from the pack with 16 wickets at 14.81. Unfortunately, I can’t make a special mention of everyone who played for the Bulldogs over the course of the season (all up twenty-two players were used). However, I do have to acknowledge the contribution of Johnny Blonde for his scoring efforts over the course of the season. Our specialist number 11 was an outstanding scorer using multiple colours in the book to give us both strike rate and balls faced against each opposition bowler, which made the team feel like they were first class players. At times both with bat and ball it was a joy to be a part of the team where you could see the years of experience (Carl Gill not included) coming out on the pitch to create a game of cricket.

Notable combinations: Pasan(ovich) Mohotti and anybody batting below him. His mastery of batting with the tail was a huge reason why we had first innings leads and his sacrificing of the tail at key moments to maintain his run of 5 not outs was also noted (and appreciated). Josh Hawkridge and Alex Fensome putting on an opening stand of 62 for the first wicket in tough conditions and Josh then going to score 57. And in the same game Patrick Arnold and George Scandlyn putting on a 52 run stand for the fourth wicket.

56 Also a special mention has to be made here of mother nature and her ability to combine with the weekend to negate cricket.

Individual Accolades: Bowling - one 5-for for Pratik Daftary; three 3-for’s for both Kuntal Patel and Pasanovich and two 3-fors for (Handsome) Rob Whitaker. Batting: Pasanovich also had 275 runs for the season with a highest score of 46 not out (of course), Patrick Arnold had 271 runs for the season with a highest score 87*, James McNamara 230 runs for the season and a highest score of 74 and Kieran (Death) Ray gets a special mention for scoring 39 (off 26 balls including 2 towering 6`s and 6 worm- cutting 4`s) of his 46 runs for the season in a single innings (he was part of Pasanovich’s management of the tail). Special Match: The special match goes to a 2 day victory over the Collegians Axemen where Patrick Arnold ably captained the Bulldogs to victory, and where we had the top opening stand of the season of 81 with Josh Hawkridge going on to score fifty. James McNamara and Patrick Arnold put on a special partnership of 113 runs, James McNamara top scoring with 74 and Patrick going on to make a captains knock of 52. Finally in the second innings, Death Ray being called up at literally the last minute on game day and then bowling four consecutive maidens and finishing with the bizarre figures of 5 overs, 4 maidens for 1 run; and Kuntal’s bowling figures of 4 wickets for 11 runs off 8 overs.

Sad news for Bulldogs fans, Martin Powell is leaving our fair shores to pursue an international cricketing call up for German side the Berlin Super Kings. To conclude, the season was up and down (in typical Bulldogs fashion) with some big highs as stated above and some lows (not mentioned).

58 4th Grade Hawks team season report 2016-17 by Prateek Singh ------

The season 2016-17 was again a mixed season for the Hawks performance wise. This time the season started on a very positive note as we had a very solid team in the first quarter of the season as opposed to previous seasons where Hawks always become a stronger side during the last leg of the season. We played some real good cricket in all the areas. The highlight of the season was one of the matches we played against Sri Lankan sports and we posted a total of more than 330 which was the highest scored by the Hawks in a long while. The innings included a brilliant knock from Viraj Kumar who scored 150 plus.

But in the later half of the season, the Hawks took a big hit once again as we lost a few players during the season and hence the team had a few new faces with some fill ins. Because of irregular faces every week, we couldn't put up a show as what everybody would have been expected. At the same time there were far more positives in the team than negatives. Amongst the new faces, a special mention goes to Bhupinder Singh Gill who was definitely the pick of the bowlers rather unlucky that he couldn't fetch as many wickets as he would have liked or deserved against his name.

However, the Hawks have always been a brilliant side with some serious individual talents and skills, but has lacked a team performance, owning responsibilities and playing as a team, plus a few other organisational issues. We started by seriously addressing the organisational issues first, like reaching the grounds half hour before the match etc and this was resolved fairly quickly. But the introduction of new and very promising faces in the team this season strengthened the morale of the team and the team spirit.

There were some serious performances from the Hawks and we gave a big fright to the top teams such as Aces, Chinamen and Tigers. Viraj Kumar, Prateek Singh and Jonny Waters were the main run scorers, while Bhupinder Singh Gill and Tarun Anand got the bulk of the wickets. We were extremely unlucky as we threw a few matches away even after

59 we were really in full control of the match. Mainly because we possibly lacked a fifth good bowler who could bowl some steady overs. .However, there are some real good signs for the Hawks to become one of the stronger teams in our grade. The boys are all pumped up for the upcoming season and are committed to finishing in the top 3 in the table in 2 dayers and 1 dayers

60 Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 1 Taxes team season report 2016-17 by Paul Young ------

Taxes Player Ratings 2017

9 – Slash’s Mrs - Turned up to every game, scored every game, updated the scoreboard & kept a record of how many catches Tunnicliffe dropped. Smashed a few goon bags and bottles of Baileys. Probably the most consistent team member, but she needs to complete a wagon wheel for all of us if she wants a player rating of 10.

8 – Ben G Gospel of Matthew Tunnicliffe 14:22–34 - “And straightway he constrained the batting order to enter the pitch, and to go before him unto the non-strikers end, till he should send the bowler back to their mark. And after he had sent the ball away, he went to Ebor street to pray: and when even was come, he was there alone. But the Taxes boys were now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the swinging ball; for the overhead conditions were contrary.

And in the afternoon session of the game he came unto them, lactating Jim Beam. And when the Taxes boys saw him lactating Jim Beam, they were troubled, saying, maybe he should cut down; and they cried out for fear. But straightaway Jesus spake unto them, saying be of good cheer; drinks on me after the game.”

8 - Ross G All Rounder Trophy. Scored a hundred, snared a 5ver, picked up a new injury most weeks and Tunnicliffe drank his beers. Lost the plot with an umpire, but was mostly well behaved. Work-on’s for 2018 – warming up/down and discipline.

7 – Matt T Claimed the Most Wickets, voted as Dick of the Year, watched a Youtube tutorial on outswing and fielded superbly for a man known as Tunnelcliffe. Claims he doesn’t know what fresh baked cookies smell like. Points deducted for not one 6 hit off his first ball faced.

61 6 – Chris O Underwent brain surgery which severely limited his wicket taking abilities. Kept the runs down, got out LBW a lot, didn’t get given any LBW’s. Set some good fields, and provided good chat. Tunnicliffe stole all his wickets.

6 – Marty I Most Improved for 2017. Finally got out of the 20’s, scored his first hundy, scored us some pretty nice team shirts… Thanks Parrotdog! Brought Chilli Bin every week, refused to bowl when asked, dropped 4 ½ catches to win the block of butter. Tunnicliffe drank his beers.

5 – Gav B Return of the prodigal son. Bowled into the wind, batted down the order, took some screamers and dropped an absolute, total, complete, unqualified, out and out utter sitter. Brought up his 100 wickets & 1500 runs for the team, but needs to stop using my bat and buy his own…

5 – Slash H Winner of the Gaven (with an E) Carter Memorial Learn to Catch Clinic Cup. A few starts with the bat, a few big 6’s. TAB paying $16.70 for a Slash century in 2018. Bonus points for providing sausage rolls, mini quiches, sour snake lollies, milkshakes, chicken satay kebabs & the gear bag. Points deducted for having a trigger finger. Tunnicliffe ran him out.

5 – Ben E Dropped some bombs, threw some grenades and laid some bear traps on the opposition batsmen… Bonus points for long umpiring stints, but now I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him on the scorebook….

5 – Matt G Broke his hand pre-season, got married, left early for his honeymoon, pretty much cost us the grade with his absence. I had a mint time at his wedding though. Tunnicliffe drank his beers.

5 – Paul Y Batted, bowled, set fields, umpired, did the score book, provided weekly taxi services. None of which the whole team agreed with (despite finishing 2nd). Also fixed a few bats and put on a few grips. Tunnicliffe made him 50 shades greyer.

62 4 – Phil M Bowled some balls, had a moan. Batted some balls, had a moan. Fielded some balls, had a moan and never came back.

63 Intercity 1 Day Grade – Division 1 – Shepherds team season report 2016-17 by Greg Scobie

After a fine 2015/16 season expectations were high for another good season in 2016/17. With few personnel changes prospects looked good. Even in the grading matches hopes were high with a win, a loss and a rained out match.

However the season did not meet our expectations with form, mainly with the bat but also with ball, eluding us especially in comparison with the previous season. Our top run aggregate scorers this season were close to 200 runs down on the previous season. No centuries scored and only 3 half centuries scored. Only one of the top 4 run scorers last season made it into the top 4 this season. Batting collapses seemed to be the norm as relatively good positions gave way to defeats.

Having said that the team still tried damned hard and results didn't go our way in spite of our efforts. Bring on next season when hopefully rejuvenated bodies and minds will deliver!

64 Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 1 Originals team season report 2016- 2017 by Carl Hammington ------

The 2016/2017 season started off like all the others. A team list full of players advising how keen they are for the upcoming season. However, as any team organizer knows, the team list very quickly depletes to the same old 6-7 regulars.

After 3 grading games, 2 rained out, 1 played, (we were able to win this game convincingly) we were put in Division 1 of the intercity 1-day grade.

With numbers at an all-time low, I decided to throw a tantrum/meltdown to Gordie, and after some consideration, Gordie very kindly got us some more fellas to add to the roster.

The 2016/2017 season recruits are: Thomas Durville, Mohammed Rafaqat, Tom Marsland, Damian George, Scott Oldham, Finlay Smith and George Morris.

With the George brothers (Jithu and Riju) already in the team, we now had 4 George’s on the team list, so I began thinking, by George this could be our season. As the season rolled on, I soon realized, by George, this is no different than any other, not enough runs scored, not enough wickets taken. Too many dropped catches, too many fielding mistakes. The clichés could go on all day.

The season proper started out with the odd win mixed with several loses. We had some very close games, 3 of them lost within 10 runs.

The season ended up in a win 4, lose 7, abandoned 3. Placing 5th out of 8 teams

Once our bad boy Jimmy McLaughlin came back from a 6-month suspension for an altercation with the divisions worst behaved, dishonest, arrogant and the team that just takes the fun out of cricket (sorry digressing a little bit here), things started to turn slightly for the better, we

65 started scoring more runs (largely contributed by Jimmy) wickets started to fall and the team was starting to look up again. This could also be down to Jimmy’s captaincy (although not 100% convinced).

Batting Scott Oldham 299 in 6 games average 49.83 (HS 164) Jimmy McLaughlin. in 6 games average 59.80 (HS 84) (1 not out) Bowling Thomas Durville 21 wickets at average of 23. Economy of 3.84 Carl Hammington 15 wickets at average of 29. Economy of 4.23 Fielding Best fielder would have to go to Kirk Hammington. Great out fielding and rocket arm (no one else in the team can throw). Also took some ripper catches while keeping.

Roster of 2016/2017

Jimmy McLaughlin (C), Carl Hammington (VC), Kirk Hammington(wk), Craig Mahoney, Jithu George, Riju George, Damian George, George Morris, Tom Marsland, Scott Oldham, Findlay Smith, Thomas Durville, Mohammed Rafque, Mark Bhula, Tavita Lipine, Eno L, Gerrard Rendel, Johnathan Pereira.

Summary

The season was up and down like a whores drawers, glimpses of goodness, but greatness few and far between, although it was a good time had by all, SOME great games with SOME great guys.

With the addition to our new recruits, I am sure we are all chomping at the bit for next season.

The future looks bright for the East’s Originals (at this stage) Intercity 1 day team.

67 Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 2 The Shoe Clinic team report 2016- 17 by Sam Hyde ------

Well a better year this year in that we came second, but lost to our long time rivals Easts Masters in a crunch game 3 weeks from the end of the season. They bowled exceptionally well and we were 40 runs short of posting a competitive target. Our last game of the season saw us playing them again of which we won convincingly but too late. In reality we lost 2 games in the first half of the season which we should have won and it was always uphill from there. We had some very welcome additions to the team this year; Rob Bruns, Geoff Glynan, Nick Robbers, Justin Cook, and Liam Close. Rob was the pick of the bunch but all were either famous, or infamous in their ability to play cricket - in the end they all added to the Shoe Clinic XI spirit and ensured our fines coffers were overflowing by season end.

Some highlights were Scott Pender hit 2 more hundreds to add to his ever growing tally, Matt Hunt and Justin Cook were exceptional with Justin beating Matt to Player of the Year through a technicality. Moment of the year went to Matt Hunt for his epic sendoff to an Onslow 4th XI player, and Sam Hyde's inspirational captains decision to post 4 short covers to dismiss Sanjay from Easts Masters.

T20 Section 1 Indies team season report 2016/17 by Ben Wynne- Lewis ------

The 2016/17 Indies season started with incredible promise. After winning the opening few qualifying rounds the Indies were once again in the premier 20/20 grade. Unfortunately, the accomplishments from a team perspective end here (other than eventually paying the team fee).

The Indies were however graced with some fantastic cricketing talent. Tom Brown managed to achieve back to back centuries with an average of 70 with the bat for the season. A man with tremendous hand eye coordination who manages to absolutely belt the nut.

Cole O’Connor was the Indies MVP with his Cory Anderson, “he bats and bowls, he bowls and bats” like role. His ability to attack the yorker length in this form of the game is truly beautiful to watch. Other Indies faithful, Kartik Sourirajan and Dinesh Manicckam, should be commended for their team attitude and managing to turn up to the majority of the games.

Unfortunately, the Indies struggled to consistently field their initial roster which impeded their otherwise certain finals chances. Their best XI is certainly capable of greatness yet the Siglo deck captures the wits of far too many of our team.

All in all, cricket was the winner on the day. Also, special mention to Gordie for having to deal with Indies riff raff on a week by week basis. It certainly cannot be easy.

70 T20 Section 2 The Lads XI team season report 2016-17 by James White ------

It's the year 2065. A grizzly old man is perched at the bar, quietly nursing what is certainly his 4th pint of the afternoon. A single tear rolls down his weather beaten cheek, as he thinks back to his youth which has now escaped him. The glory days of old. In particular the magical summer of 2016/17, and the timeless friendships that were forged within that special team, that special institution. The team known simply as The Wellington Regional Cricket, Social Twenty Twenty Division 2, Eastern Suburbs, The Lads XI.

It was always going to be an interesting year for The LadsXI. Unable to match the wild money being thrown around in other leagues around the world, big name stars had left for greener pastures. Lesser teams would have buckled, and given way to the pressure of finding enough sub paying members. But not this squad. Early season team meetings held at 3am at Siglo, were very productive, and a new lease of life was breathed into the legs of some of the elder statesman. A new Captain and Vice Captain, a new opening partnership, a new team kit, and a renewed drive to tackle anything that got in their way.

The guts of the squad remained from 2015/16 campaign, but reports had appeared that seemed to show concern from within the Kilbirnie Clubrooms, around the run scoring and wicket taking properties of the team. So it was with a mix of old and new, tall and short, rigs and riiiigs, that the Lads set about putting together not only a squad, but a team ethos that would lead them through the season. Thursday nights at the state of the art Eastern Suburbs Cricket training centre, were a hive of activity. The lads began the arduous task of getting back into cricket season shape. Rolling the arm over, practising a few forward defensives, partaking in the odd durrie and building this strong team spirit, that would be a constant throughout an intriguing season.

It was a brilliant effort in the grading games, the boys toiled hard and were rewarded with demotion to Division 2 of the 20/20 league. The bond

71 that was forged during pre season attracted new members and the wider training squad was born. There was never a shortage of hands willing to send out to the front lines.

The Batsman of the year was unanimously given to “Douggies Bat”, although it was not the only reason this team had great success with the willow this year. Firstly there was the experimental, but by the pointy end of the season, entrenched, opening partnership of S. Rees and A. White. Complimenting each other beautifully, it was a joy to be able to score the first few overs of the match. One would simply marvel at the genuine cricket shots, King Kane himself would be proud of, and genuine Social Divison 2 20/20 cricket shots, that came straight out of the playbook. There was a consistent middle order, led by Skip J. White, and often contributed to by the youth element of G. Metson and M “the apprentice” Ashby. M. Hickey was also a handsome looking threat with the willow in his hand, hitting some of the biggest DLF Maximums of the year.

The bowling was spearheaded by Vice Captain A. Blewman, steaming in at a blistering 105km p/h. His little “Gavin Larsen's” proving too tempting for many an opening batsman who met his end. Providing the grunt was new recruit S. Argue. Though he may suck at life in general, he managed to play his first game of cricket in over 20 years, and became an integral member of the bowling squad. L. Metsons filthy flippers, along with B. Dobson and J. Ramsden’s consistency (when not bowling to female opponents) through the middle overs, provided one of the more solid bowling line ups the lads have had.

The efforts in the field deserve a mention as well. Quite rightly considered the Achilles Heel of the lads for two seasons, the ability to drop as little as just 3-4 catches in some games, made a massive difference in end results of this campaign. A certain A. Hanson’s sprawling dives at long off, were simply unrecognisable from just one season earlier. H. Middleton promoted from Square Leg put in nothing short of 100% week in week out. And R. Davidson, is now considered the number one behind the stumps and also number one boat racer in the team.

72 Heroics came in all shapes and sizes this season for the Lads. There was I. Hayes, 24 off the penultimate over, whist nine down to win the match at Liardet. The official highest score by a Lad in History of 147* by Reesy, on a day where everything went right in Wilton. A massive highlight was defending just 12 off the final 2 overs in Newtown, as well as collapsing to be 60 odd all out on Sunday at Ian Galloway, after a bender the night before.

But this season was more than just these moments. This Season was about the squad! The 100% fully committed nature of every single member to do what he could to contribute to this team's legacy. The enjoyment of Thursday evenings at the nets, the cold brews shared at the clubrooms after each match, and the brilliant banter on and off the field. Cricket was the winner this season, Cricket and the comradery of the boys, sharing the best times of their lives together.

...and that old man perched at the Bar. That's not a tear of sadness rolling down his face, but a tear of joy. He does not pine for the olden days, but is filled with a simple sense of utter content, knowing he was part of something special. Something that is timeless and meaningful. And anyway the boys have just arrived, is on the telly, and Aussie are getting rolled 112/7. Life is Good.

LadsXI 2016/17 Squad: J. White (c), A. White, S. Rees, S. Argue, A. Blewman, M. Hickey, J, Ramsden, R. Davidson (wk), H. Middleton, G. Metson, L. Metson, A. Hansen

73 T20 Section 2 Cobras team season report 2016-17 by Gordon Dry ------

When you don’t get a season report from the Cobra’s skipper, it’s safe to assume they had a pretty average/poor season. In actual fact they finished a fairly close third on the table, and with an ounce of luck could have finished higher.

Team captain and chief organiser Scott Barnett is a Cobras stalwart and puts in the hard yards pulling the team up by its bootstraps. A good front man and a handy cricketer, he’s the glue that keeps things together and a very necessary element in keeping the team functioning.

Probably the highlight of their season was Ayden Smith 122* and Mitch Aitchison 104 in the same game against the hapless Brooklyn side. The innings total was 279-1, not bad for 20 overs!!! Others to pitch in with runs from time to time were Clinton Parker, Jono Fair and Ty Phillips. Scott, Jono and Ty also grabbed some wickets along the way.

These guys could win this grade if they put their heads down in 2017/18.

74 T20 Section 2 Tigers team season report 2016/17 by Duncan McIntyre ------

Nothing like a bit of slap and tickle and this unit, which varied from week to week, decided to dabble in a season of the shorter format.

The team was compiled of some old heads, some fantastic new talent, the occasional female and sometimes a couple of cricketers! It was a great season with a mixture of results and the opportunity to play at some new grounds. The newer faces in the side really stepped up and had great seasons and everyone seemed to chip in nicely around them.

The shorter format certainly brought about its own nuances and its own set of skills. There was some fine cricket played across the Saturdays and the lads all got an opportunity to showcase their skills at some stage in the season.

A couple of the highlights of the season were from the new lads who offered some great moments which included

• Some great pace bowling off three steps from a newbie • A ton opening the batting • A dropped and bowled on a hattrick (the bowler ended up with 6 fa) • A classy couple of knocks from a stylish left hander in an old school John Wright helmet and golf shoes • A girl hitting two big sixes at Kilbirnie Park • Excellent fielding from one of the elderly statesmen • And the chance to see re-jigged and new batting line ups.

As always it takes a lot to get 11 players together every Saturday but getting guys to fill in for a much shorter period is far more appealing to a fill in – but we still struggled to get 11 players for every game and this probably came back to affect our results in the table at the end.

75 Ben Arcus got a lot of runs and wickets - Ryan Gardiner, Max Moar & Duncan McIntyre all chipped in with runs, while Mark Wilson, James Wintringham, Dan Jones & Rishab Bhatia snaffled a few wickets. But everyone contributed to the team effort.

This team is a fantastic bunch and has great unity so no doubt we will take the lessons learnt from this season and apply them to the next.

Thanks must be said to the team administrator who brought carb-less export dry beers to the game and brought girls as player fill ins – they were pretty cool and could play!

And also as always a massive thanks to Gordon Dry who was finally acknowledged for all his efforts to cricket by NZ Cricket. You do a fantastic job and at times you are not thanked enough.

We love Easts and this is truly the best club in NZ

76 T20 Section 2 Jiminy Crickets team season report 2016 -17 by Ben Deeble

After a short preseason and after some successful recruitment of some former teammates from a previously successful Waikanae team (who may have dissolved due to our poaching in the previous season) jiminy crickets felt we were ready for a modestly successful season with a slightly more experienced team with a more consistent line up. Unfortunately, our plans of rising up though the division 3 ranks to a more credible position than our previous result of “not last” were to be scuppered, first by the weather and then by players missing games for “unforeseen commitments”. The cancelling of two games in the grading season meant any results were much more significant towards our position in the grading standings. Thus, when an excellent bowling effort allowed us to smash a victory over our old foes the Jamaicans of Brooklyn we rocketed into division 2 (a step up from our previous season in which we won 2 games). With unbridled hubris, we decided we should be up for the task (that is until we found out heaps of our players would be missing games due to changes in work and planned holidays). Game 1 of the season was to be symptomatic of our season as we went into the game down 4 regular players. Luckily Sam stepped up (as he would on a number of occasions) and got us some ring-ins. Unluckily we found the batting of grade 2 sides was a step up and as we had lost our pace machine Carl to the evils of Hell (Pizza) our attack was not as potent as we previously believed. We had also lost his brother Mark to a masters degree overseas so our batting was also weakened and we collapsed to a bit of a thrashing. Undeterred, we went through the season with the pluck of a child who just doesn’t know when to give up. Unfortunately, our fielding at times also resembled said small child, with said ball having crossed the boundary line, or bounced out of players hands in an attempted catch leading to some relatively hefty totals being set against us. To counter this we attempted to employ a cunning strategy of batting second as often as possible so at least we would get longer to play each week, and could just have a crack when imposing run chases were set. The recruitment of Liam and Jackson vastly improved both our bowling and batting stocks, as well as the return from holidays of the experienced Jimmy and Mark.

77 Pleasingly our middle order began to post some handy little contributions as well. Improvements in the field also began to arise, in particular the speedy pursuit of opposition shots by Finn and a much- improved Matt (in his first year of cricket) help restrict some totals. With an increasingly regular lineup we began to post improved totals and reached our highest total yet 190 runs!

Notable thanks must go to Sam O for becoming a reliable and handy fill in, so committed he even bought new shoes to play for us, and to Liam who changed his work shifts so he could play full games.

With some potential new recruits on the line and a more solid line up forecasted, alongside the possibility of practising during the season rather than only in the 3 weeks before, the future looks hopeful for the Jiminy Crickets. Sadly, this bright future will be without Finnian, our chief spinner of the past two seasons and ever-present fielding king, who leaves us for red pastures in Canada. We will miss him greatly, hopefully we will hear tales of him spinning out batting line-ups in Canada, assuming someone plays cricket there. Notable stats:

The stats tell suggest interesting stories: did the manager collude with his captain to get more overs despite being one of the more expensive bowlers, then justify it with the highest total wickets (by bowling the most overs)? Do our best strike rates coming from the two most expensive bowlers, both being spin, suggest we relied on boundary catching at cow’s corner, a position frequently and gleefully fielded at by our captain? Did we all come back from Christmas better batsmen but more unfit and/or out of form bowlers because we all got a bit lazy and fatter over the break? Did we rashly drop will from the bowling line up too soon? Is Jacksons strategy of bowling 2 over spells one that allowed him to be statistically our best bowler, or did he just not play enough games to get smashed about? Nothings for certain. Have I got the stats wrong, or were some figures misattributed? Possibly.

79 T20 Section 3 Stags team season report 2016-17 by Gordon Dry ------

The Stags were a new team to the Club and started off their tenure by winning their grade. They only dropped two games all season and it looks like a bump up to the next level should be on the cards.

Difficult to get a season report and stats out of, but that will be a work in progress for the next year.

They have some pretty handy cricketers, including one guy by the name of Simon George. Simon has experience – albeit, in the back yard at the Dry’s or at the local school, where many a fiercely competitive “test match “ was fought out!! Ben Coley also deserves a special mention recording a hattrick during the 2016/17 campaign.

Look forward to seeing all you guys next season.

80 T20 Section 3 Tingers team season report 2016/17 by Billy Papatsoumas ------

Not much I can say for the Tingers, having lost every single game this season – we were absolute shite!! Some statistics worthy of mention –

Top run scorer – Luc Townsend – 177 runs @ 25.5 average. Top wicket taker – Vincent Papatsoumas – 14 wickets Top fielder – Levi Harris – never dropped a catch all season.

Gordie reckons we should start early on a recruitment campaign – perhaps dangle a few carrots in front of some likely candidates. Loosen the purse strings and also tempt some fellas with the promise of chocolate fish and free beers. I’ve heard tell that some cricketers will crawl over broken glass to get to a free beer!!

Righto boys – let’s get onto it now!!!

T20 Section 3 Goons team season report 2016-17 by Gordon Dry ------

The Goons were a new team to the Club this season. Made up mainly of rugby guys – led by Cory Lawrence(MSP) – they showed a bit of promise by chalking up a couple of wins. However, the team fell apart late in the season and disappeared off the scene. That was a shame because there were some notable performances – namely a score of 144* by Andy Ellis (not the Canterbury guy), and figures of 5-25 including a hattrick by Sean Bridge.

We may be able to resurrect this team for next season, but we’ll need to get the organisational structures in place in order for the outfit to stay the distance and succeed.

81 T20 Womens Wildcats team season report 2016-17 by Gordon Dry

After cleaning up the grade in the 2014-15 season, the “Wildcats” kept up the momentum in 2015-16 season finishing first equal. Lo and behold they did the same in 2016-17 with another dead heat for first place. However, they were awarded the grade winners pennant on a countback. They were generally too good for most opposition, when at full strength.

The team was well lead and organised by Sammy Lewis and Tess Ure- Bowman and they did a splendid job of marshalling the troops!

Sammy, sister Penny, Tess and Emme Ellis were strong contributors all season, whilst Sally Gardiner, Jamie Berry and Jo Bisphan pitched in with solid efforts.

Players to take the field for the team during 2016/17 included:-

Tess Ure-Bowman Jamie Berry Emme Ellis Sammy Lewis Penny Lewis Jo Bisphan Amy Dixon Makere Derbyshire Rachel Hyde Charlotte Hollingsworth Rosie Collins Amanda Hill Maddy Drew

82 Junior Section season report 2016-17 by Marty Brooky

This year we have had another good increase in playing numbers. We also saw the elimination of Colts and Premier leagues and all teams remaining at eight players. The introduction of Rep cricket was also introduced. These I believe were all good moves for the game it keeps teams together through to year eight and gives players an opportunity to represent the club at representative level. These changes however introduced some challenges such as requiring more coaches, grounds and team gear. I appreciate and thank the parents who have helped out, many with no prior experience either coaching or managing cricket teams.

At the end of the 2016/17 Season, Brian Gardner and Paul Bracewell took over from me as the Junior Convenor. Both have several children in the club and I am sure will bring a new energy and vision moving forward. Brian and Paul have already begun the planning for next season and I look forward to them sharing some of their ideas with the wider club.

Over the last seven years as convenor I am pleased with what the club has achieved. To name a few areas of success we have over 50 children going to Hawkes Bay summer cricket camps, a strong committee, spring training and a growing interest in girl’s cricket. We have also seen the development of the “one club” in recent years where senior players like Ricky Joseph, Jamie Gibson, Lauchie Johns and Anker Bassi have been involved in the development of our juniors. I also appreciate the support given by Gordon Dry to the Junior Club especially looking after the junior members going on to College.

My passion is for the development of junior cricket skills. Two of my proudest moments were to see recently 8 Easts Junior players from the same era making the Wellington U17/19 rep teams. Even better was to see three of these Jack Anderson, Luke Georgeson and Jed Wiggins make their debut for the East’s Premier Team.

83 Finally I would like to thank the parents that have supported me during my period as convenor. We have a fantastic club and I look forward to watching with interest as we continue to go from strength to strength.

Go the mighty Easts!

85 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club Financial Statements for the year ended 30th April 2017 Audit Report to the Members of Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club

I have audited the attached financial statements on pages 88 to 92. The financial statements provide information about the past financial performance of the Club and its financial position as at 30th April 2017. This information is stated in accordance with the accounting policies set out on pages 93 to 96.

Management’s Responsibilities

Management is responsible for the preparation of financial statements which fairly reflect the financial position of the Club as at 30th April 2017 and of the results of operations for the year ended 30th April 2017.

Auditor’s Responsibilities

It is my responsibility to express an independent opinion on the financial statements presented by management and report my opinion to you.

Basis of Opinion

An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence relevant to the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. It also includes assessing: • the significant estimates and judgements made by management in the preparation of the financial statements, and • whether the accounting policies are appropriate to the Club’s circumstances, consistently applied and adequately disclosed.

I conducted my audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards in New Zealand except that my work was limited as explained below. I planned and performed my audit so as to obtain all the information and explanations which I considered necessary in order to provide me with sufficient evidence to give reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from material misstatements,

86 whether caused by fraud or error. In forming my opinion I also evaluated the overall adequacy of the presentation of information in the financial statements.

Qualified Opinion

My examination of revenue, because of its nature, was limited to comparison of recorded amounts with bank deposits. Whilst I have no reason to believe that there has been any unrecorded revenue, there are no practical audit procedures to confirm this. In this respect alone I have not obtained all the information and explanations that I have required. In my opinion, except for adjustments that might have been found to be necessary had I been able to obtain sufficient evidence concerning revenue: • proper accounting records have been kept by the Club as far as appears from my examination of those records; and • the financial statements on pages 87 to 91 ; - comply with generally accepted accounting practice; and - give a true and fair view of the financial position of the Club as at 30th April 2017 and the results of its operations for the year ended on that date.

Independence

When carrying out the audit I followed the independence requirements of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand. Other than the audit, while I have played cricket for the Club, I have not been involved in the club’s financial operations or management, during the period under review.

My audit was completed on 3rd July 2017 and my qualified opinion is expressed as at that date.

In 1993/94 the committee assessed the depreciated value of its 50% share to be $50,000, for the purposes of the balance sheet. Since then much extension work and new additions have been done and the cost is recorded separately in the fixed assets above. 92 Statement of Accounting Policies

Reporting Entity The Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club was established on 23 September 1993 and results from the amalgamation of the Kilbirnie Cricket Club and the Midland St Pats Cricket Club The Club's primary objective is to provide opportunities for the community to participate in sporting activities, as opposed to making a financial return. Accordingly, the Club has designated itself as a public benefit entity for the purposes of New Zealand Equivalents to International Financial Reporting Standards ("NZIFRS"). The financial statements of the Club are for the year ended 30 April 2017.

Statement of Compliance The financial statements comply with NZ IFRS, and other applicable Financial Reporting Standards, as appropriate for public benefit entities.

Differential Reporting The Club qualifies for Differential Reporting under the size criteria of the NZ IFRS Differential Reporting Framework 3.8 due to total gross income being less than $20 million and total assets being less than $10 million. The Club has applied the following differential reporting exemptions: NZ IAS 1: Presentation of Financial Statements Note disclosure on the judgments management has made in applying the Club’s accounting policies; Note disclosure on the key assumptions concerning the future and other sources of estimation uncertainty; Note disclosure on the Club’s capital management policy. NZ IAS 7: Statement of Cash Flows Preparation of a statement of cash flows. Significant Accounting Polices The accounting policies set out below have been applied consistently to all periods presented in these financial statements.

Measurement base The financial statements have been prepared on the basis of modified historical cost accounting. Accrual accounting has been used to match expenses and revenue.

Functional and presentation currency The financial statements are presented in New Zealand dollars and all values are rounded to the nearest dollar. The functional currency of the Club is New Zealand dollars.

Revenue Grants and donations Grants and donations are recognised as income when they are received (subject to any restrictions imposed).

Subscriptions Income from members is recognised when received. Interest Interest income is recognised when earned using the effective interest rate.

Other revenue All other revenue is recognised when earned and is reported in the

94 financial period to which it relates.

Tax The Club is exempt from income tax. The Club is registered for GST purposes. Income and expenditure items are shown net of GST. GST is accounted for on an invoice basis.

Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents comprise deposits with banks and other utilities, bank and cash balances. Deposits are included when they have a maturity of no more than three months from the date of acquisition.

Term Deposits At each balance date the Club assesses whether there is any objective evidence that a term deposit is impaired. After initial recognition the term deposits are measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method. For term deposits, impairment is established when there is objective evidence that the Club will not be able to collect amounts due according to the original terms of the deposit. Significant financial difficulties of the bank or financial institution, probability that they will enter bankruptcy and default in payments are considered indicators that a deposit is impaired.

Receivables Receivables are recognised at the original invoice amount less impairment losses.

Property, Plant and Equipment Property, plant and equipment are stated at cost or fair value less accumulated depreciation and impairment losses.

Additions The cost of an item of property, plant and equipment is recognised as an asset only when it is probable that future economic benefits or service potential associated with the item will flow to the Club and the cost of the item can be measured reliably.

95 Disposals Where an item of plant and equipment is disposed of, the gain or loss recognised in the statement of financial performance is calculated as the difference between the net sale price and the carrying amount of the asset.

Impairment Property, plant and equipment is reviewed for impairment whenever events or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying amount may not be recoverable. Any impairment loss is recognised for the amount by which the asset’s carrying value exceeds its recoverable amount.

Depreciation Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost or revalued amounts of property, plant and equipment, to their estimated residual value, on a diminishing value or straight line basis over the expected useful economic lives of the assets concerned. Estimated useful lives are as follows: Pitch covers 20% p.a. on straight line Practice Nets 10% p.a. on diminishing value Clubrooms, extensions 2.5% p.a. on diminishing value Furniture, Fittings and Equipment 20% p.a. on diminishing value

Payables Trade and other payables represent liabilities for goods and services provided to the club prior to the end of the financial year that are unpaid. The notional amount of creditors is deemed to reflect fair value.

96 Treasurers Report – Season 2016-17 by Gordon Dry ------

The Club recorded a surplus in the accounts for the financial year ended 30th April 2017 of $ 11,973. This is made up as follows: Senior Section + 7,129 (surplus) Junior Section + 9,687 (surplus) Depreciation - 4,843 ------+11,973 (surplus)

This is a satisfactory result and reflects close management of income sources and a responsible approach in most areas of expenditure.

Grants from the gaming machine trusts were at an acceptable level for both the Senior and the Junior Sections. Funding from other sources was also very pleasing. We need to continue to nurture and develop these avenues of income where we can.

We can look forward to 2017/18 with confidence. Our reserves are healthy, but we need to keep a firm hand on the situation, so that the Club can continue to prosper and benefit from our financial strength.

All in all, the Club is in excellent heart and well placed to meet the challenges that lie ahead.

Go the Mighty Easts!!
